Update Delay

Hello everyone,

I understand many of you are eager for the update. This is my fault, I made a mistake by setting a deadline. It is very difficult to predict software development timelines. Because some tasks are far more difficult then initially imagined, or you get stalled by a bug that is hard to find, etc.

When I initially developed the software, I always had a "done when it's done" philosophy. I like this approach because the product in the end is far superior. So we will go back to a done when it's done policy.

An update on where we are. I developed a beta that was mostly working about a month ago. However there have been a few bugs with 'turbo mode'. Turbo mode allows the router to far exceed the current throughput thresholds. Way beyond 500mbits closer to 900mbits.

As I was working on the bugs I realised that the 'turbo mode' source code will be used for many years to come as router processing hardware is not growing at the rate bandwidth is so a fully functioning turbo mode will mean the R1 will be future-proofed for many years to come. As mentioned above, I  like to do every task to the best of my ability.

I've spent the last two weeks understanding the network stack holistically all the way from the Ethernet MDIO Phy layer up to user-space processing. I've learnt a lot and have already identified a bunch of issues that will improve the top speed and also make the router even more stable/high-performance. For example I found in rare scenarios some packets get re-ordered or even duplicated. This has a negative impact on TCP throughput and can cause problems for UDP applications like games.

Long story short, I'm just reaching the tail end of my turbo mode R&D, once that's done I'll release the firmware. After that I'll immediately get Fraser testing the new anti-jitter, anti-spike tech and the following version will include that. The version after that will have major functional changes which will give you extremely fine control over your entire network. When will they be released? As soon as we get them done.

Thanks for the patience as always,

Iain

PS I'm not releasing anti-jitter & turbo at the same time as they are both huge changes and if there are any issues the inter-dependencies can muddy the water.

Thanks for the update!  But that's BS when you have that "Done when it's done" mentality!  If someone offered you 1 million dollars to have your software done by weeks end, I'm pretty sure it will be done!  SO PLEASE......You wealthy people out there, offer Netduma 1 million dollars so we can have our beloved-ed R1 humming like a well tuned racing machine!  :D :D :D

Just kidding Iain, thanks for your hard work and dedication!  On a side note, you better not be playing Halo 5 and putting our update on the back burner.  HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Great work Iain!  Thanks for caring to take the time to update us and let us see a little behind the scenes.

We have a saying where I come from and basically it fits situations just like this one.  "This is what happens when you quick talking about it and get dirty".  Looking at a timeline or a projection is fine, but until you actually start doing the real work, you truly have no "for sure" idea of what WILL happen as opposed to what CAN happen.

With software, I have found that to be EVEN more true than building things of concrete and steel.  There are just so many more variables.

I prefer to give someone who is a specialist in a given field the time to do the job correctly (within reasonable expectations) as opposed to rushing them unnecessarily.

Why is probably why the drive thru wedding chapel does exist, but drive through heart surgery doesn't.

Just sayin....

Thank you for the update.  Coming from an engineering environment, we always say that fixing it now (before release) may only cost us about $100 but it will cost us $10k to $10M later once the product is in the field.  It is better to have a smaller population complaining about the release date than a large population complaining about bugs.

None of us mind waiting for something that works.

Will any of the upcoming firmware releases fix those of us with the

Energy Efficient Ethernet problems?

.

After testing doesn't look like it.

So for Black OPS 3 coming out a in few days on the 6th of November, no optimizations or improvements before then?, take your time bro, but damn it would of been perfect timing.

There wouldn't have been much that would help out in this scenario, the thing that will help the most is a cloud update which we will do once we can test the game (we have it preordered)

Buddy great job. Or Like a Stake Well done. I have got what i paid for if I get anything more then  its just cherry on the top.

I'm with lukasz on this, very few of my games are perfect but when I got netduma I hadn't play cod AW for at least 6mnths as my kdr was going backwards and dropped to 1.12 at 2 prestige now I'm 5 times round I think and up to 1.21. It may sound petty but I'm pretty chuffed with that.

When the update comes it will be an added bonus ☺

And I think my biggest thanks is purely just for you guys caring enough about gaming/gamers to actually want to do something about it. #brohugs

Thanks for the update man, The R1 that I purchased months ago is still doing a fantastic job and I am still laughing my socks off every gaming session even when I get spanked!!! :o

Any future update is most welcome and I am sure that most agree that we would rather have a fully functioning well tested update that works than to suffer with issues after release.

Keep up the good work Duma team :)

mate...I appreciate you talking your time (Even thought I want this update now - lol) too bad you couldn't release a little of it while you work on the rest. The problem is... once you get a taste of the R1.. you want more..and now with the major update right there.. We are all fiending for it...cheers.. we still love you (not in the gay sense.. more like brother to brother.. not incest either.. you know what I mean)
