The version number will be cached in the browser, if you clear the cache or do a hard refresh on the window it should report the correct number. It is also a good idea to do a factory reset after an upgrade to ensure no legacy issues have carried over so do that first and see if you still get those reboots.

thanks Fraser... i have a funny feeling though the reboots are being caused by an externally connected HDD.

A long while ago I had one attached for testing a media server but was never able to get the TV to stream from it, it just wouldn't work properly. But i then left it attached and forgot all about it.

(i even posted about this issue some time ago) 

 

so yesterday, i removed it and Router hasn't flinched since ...? Ill keep an eye on it over the next few days remotely and see if i'm right (or not) ....

another odd thing i noticed.... when i physically disconnected the external HDD USB cable from the Router (USB HDD was powered down just prior to removal) , the red light came on the router indicating the internet was "disconnected"...?? This makes me believe even more it was linked to the other reboots that where occurring....

Maybe a total coincidence...? maybe i bumped a wire accidentally ? ...who knows... but i will continue to monitor any disconnections over next few days and will post back if any occur.

its a bit difficult to monitor the logs though as quite often when i go into the logs, it has cleared itself, like just now at 12 noon... the logs are now empty ? (see pic below) and i only have 3 options ticked to get logged. How long are the logs actually meant to "log" for ....?

I do remember something about that actually. Is your HD on this list of compatible HDs for the XR500 at all? https://kb.netgear.com/18985/Will-my-USB-drive-work-with-ReadySHARE

If not it would be interesting to see if you use a compatible HD whether the issue is still present. It should continue to log until the router has been rebooted and then it will start again. Was the log empty on the system information page as well?

I gave up trying to get this working on the router way back but forgot the hdd was still attached. after removing it, it hasnt disconnected from the internet so i may have stumbled onto something.. As in the other posts about it, i was able to see the HDD from other devices , but no files could be seen on it, just folders. In the end, i just used the NAS to add an additional external HDD and made it a "share"....

it seems the less boxes that are ticked on the XR500... the better lol!!

Was it a different HD to the one on the list? Was there anything happening on the network around the time it disconnected? Based on your other post it's possible the blocked keywords are causing it but I wouldn't have thought so but do let us know.

Fraser the hard drive was removed the other day to see if the router still kept rebooting itself. (which it has).

I don't plan on reconnecting a hdd to the router anytime soon as i have it all working from a NAS.

But the fact that the router is still randomly disconnecting for no apparent reason is a concern....  

Here is the log info just prior to it disconnecting and reconnecting. The 192.168.2.128 is a Playstation 4 hammering the router for connection.

I do use the Content filtering quite often to Block internet connection to 4 x devices. It is odd though that the router reboots mostly between 5pm and 7pm. These are the times that my son would start playing his PS4 when he comes home after school. Could the Ps4 be doing something....?

What I dont understand is why is the router blocking services OUTSIDE of the times i have set in the schedule ?

I do use the Content filtering quite often to Block internet connection to 4 x devices. It is odd though that the router reboots mostly between 5pm and 7pm. These are the times that my son would start playing his PS4 when he comes home after school. Could the Ps4 be doing something....?

What I dont understand is why is the router blocking services OUTSIDE of the times i have set in the schedule ?

I'm not sure if we've covered this before but the router can be temperamental if power fluctuates, do you have the router directly connected to a plug socket or is it sharing power with other devices on an extension lead? It's certainly no coincedence it happens at that time, precisely why it's happening is a mystery. Would it be possible to ask your son if he is downloading on the PS4 or just playing? Is the timezone correct on the router and do you have it adjusting for daylight savings time?

this issue only started after upgrading from .24 hotfix to .56

it was then reverted back to .24 hotfix but oddly the disconnecting issue then stayed with it ...

the router has always been connected to a high quality APC UPS which is running at max efficiency. There are no power fluctuations. I already checked for this on the system using a in-line power monitor. There was nothing to indicate a power issue.

its very weird that the router tends to disconnect the internet between 5 and 7pm. Its such a pity the router only retains logs for a short time as we were all away for the weekend and it would have been easy to tell from the logs if it had rebooted at any time. But because the logs are daily, this makes it difficult to monitor as they "empty" leaving you with nothing to look back at...?

yesterday the router disconnected itself again at 5:10pm, my son had been playing PS4 games all day. 

When it disconnects, the internet LED lights up red, 2 mins later router is back on connected.

Its all router related, nothing to do with the modem, the Openreach HG612 modem reports its connected up-time as 71 days 21 hours. The router however, disconnects from what i can tell, every day.  

I can hear my son scream! from two rooms away when it disconnects while he is mid-game LOL!  for that reason alone, i would like to get this issue resolved.....

Unfortunately I don't know of any way to make the router keep longer logs. I think this is an issue with lease renewal. It might be that your upstream device has the lease renewing at the same time every day. Under Settings > Monitoring > Connection Status, it may be possible to force the lease to renew at a different time.

Alex you lost me slightly. i don't see any settings Under Settings > Monitoring > Connection Status that I can change lease renew time ?

ps. the power went off almost 2 hours ago as you can see by the "Connection Time"...

unfortunately my DDNS login failed to reconnect after the router restarted which left me without remote access to the router and all my CCTV cameras!! most annoying!

This is a hotfix for an older firmware. It's not the latest firmware. It's version .40 but it has an extra fix for dropouts.

no i cannot identify anything specific happening at the time of internet disconnections...

All i see in logs are lots of repeated DHCP renews for the same device over about 30 seconds and then repeated each hour ....?

Why are these devices being assigned several times over a 30 second (or so) period ? Surely it should just do it once...

And why cant i change lease time to more than an hour ? I thought there was a setting where this could be changed.... ?

99% of my devices are setup with static IP's in the Address Reservation table, with the few exceptions of a few wireless devices, 1 x ipad, 2 x iphones

I have my HG612 (unlocked FW version - to view stats) Modem setup as IP 192.168.2.15  (which is outside of the DHCP range .18 - .253 shown above)

(Should the modem even be on the same IP range as the router ? or should it be on its on separate IP , like 192.168.1.1 ?) or does it matter ? (Lan 2 port on the modem is used to access the modems GUI and to monitor stats, so if i changed the modem IP to 192.168.1.1 , i would probably lose that ability ?)

I also have an Apple Airport configured to act as a wifi extender (setup as bridge) on IP 192.168.2.16 (which is outside of the DHCP range .18 - .253 shown above)

** Neither of these devices are included in the Lan Reservation Table above **

Does setting these 2 devices up in this manner make any difference ?

 

ideally, i would love to have the Modem do all the PPPoE work and have the router just do all that..routing etc. But i tried this before and was a royal pain to get working successfully and still be able to access devices attached to the router , remotely. So i kept things as they were, modem bridge-mode, router pppoe.

one thing I haven't tried yet is to completely disable Qos. will do that for a few days and monitor what happens with internet disconnections. prob wont make any difference but at this stage I will try anything !

Thanks for all the info - we'll try and put you in touch with NETGEAR then because, without meaning to pass the buck, none of this area is in our control so there's not much we can do to help directly. Hopefully they are able to get to the bottom of it.

@xlr8r We've contacted Netgear about this, and they have requested some extra debug information. I've written some instructions below, if you could follow them and send us the debug data, that would be awesome.

1. Go to routerlogin.net/debug.htm
2. If required, enter the usual username and password for your router (may have to enter address again after login)
3. Tick the box that says "Debug Log Capture when bootup"
4. Tick the box that says "Enable LAN/WAN Packet Capture" and press Start Capture
5. Now the next time the issue occurs, after you've reconnected to the internet, go back to routerlogin.net/debug.htm
6. Click the Save Debug Log button and send it to us

a specialist from Netgear contacted me directly via email and i am liaising with him directly on the issues 

debug logs have been sent...

ps. the router hasnt dropped internet once since i completely disabled QoS.... mnnnn ? Will watch it for a week and see before re-enabling it again and re-monitoring for another week.
