The best write up I've ever seen on headsets is on head-fi.org by MLE (mad lust envy) that dude is a true audiophile.

I'm not a huge fan of "gaming headsets" as there are much better options but people choose gaming headsets as they are easier, headphones, mix amp and mic all in one package. The only thing I've owned considered a "gaming headset" is the sennheiser pc 360 and I'm not gonna lie I love them, open can great mids and highs which is what you want for gaming.People are under the assumption you want tons of bass, which goes in the opposite direction of a set of cans for gaming. But bass is what you want for watching movies and listening to music.

I like a good set of headphones with a clip on mic (mod mic's are really nice) because the sound stage for a good set of headphones is huge and there quality can't be compared to a gaming headset, night and day difference.Again that's just my preference, that being said I have tried Astro's,Tritons and the wireless PS headset's and will stick with the sennheiser's or music headphones

For the price the Kingston Hyper X are bloody amazing! The mic is incredibly clear (and removable), they are so damn comfortable and the sound is spot on, the build quality is also very impressive for that price range. I have had the top of range TurtleBeach and Astro's (yeah I'm a sucker for advertising) and IMO they do not compare to the Hyper X for build quality and sound.

I have a set of Astro a40s and a50s. The a40s definitely sound better, but the a50s are more convenient

100% agree. I've owned both and do like the sound with the original mixamp and 40's better but the 50's are no slouch.

Edit: I do have a Vmoda headset with the boom mic pro that works well for my PS4, but I don't care for on ear phones and no chat repeat (or whatever it's called so you can hear yourself) makes them less desireable. Plus using the mixamp with them is usually a big mess.

I have a 600ohm capable amp for music and i thought that the t1s would sound crap on the mix amp , wrong they are louder than my 32ohm HP's and sound just a dynamic as if i was powering them with a expensive amp.

There was no suggestion that anyone should by the t1s in any part of this thread.

I was asked what I used.

I suggested the sony mdr ma 900 which has a massive sound stage and is killer with the mix amp.

But the t1s smash the sonys to bits on the mix amp.

Yo Zennon,

I'd like to know if all HP's can reproduce good quality surround sound with a mixamp, or if you really want the surround sound experience you need to get HP's with multiple speakers in the ear cups? Your audiophile's opinion would be greatly valued.

No you do not need multi speaker headphones.

Good Hifi HP's can reproduce the soundstage very well, for me I would always go with an audiophile headphone over a gaming head setbut thats just me.

I just so happen to have a few different sets of HP's because of my love of music and all of them sound great with the mix amp.

I recomended the Sony MDR MA 900 because you can get them for about £110 from Japan sellers on Ebay and Amazon and for this price they have the soundstage of a Sennheiser HD900 or a T1 with the obvious lower quality but if you have not heard either of these you would be blown away how pin point acurate they are for gaming and music sounds soooo good with them.

I own Denon 7000 and the T1 and for a year I could not stop listening or using them for gaming and did not even feel the need to go back to the other two flagship HP's, I was addicted to their sound for the £110 i paid for them I just could not and still can not get over what these can do.

£100 for the mix amp £110 for the sonys cheaper than the Astro's.

I have started using the T1s again and yes they are better but for the price you pay for the sonys its a slice of paradise that you get from the T1s for a fraction of the price, well worth it.

several speakers in one cub is terrible and is the main reason why regular headphones with one large driver sound better than gaming headphones with their 3-5 drivers in each cup

dont worry, even with a single driver in each cup you will get virtual surround sound :)

Personally I love my Astros been waiting to the new a40 tr to come out on 6th of October :) had older top end turtle beaches etc but they are just not in the same ball park.

Just came back from egx and tested everything I could and if you are looking at a straight gaming headset don't look any further than the Astros

I ordered the Sonys at Zennon's recommendation.  Thanks Zennon for spending your cabbage on multiple hp's to be able to provide good input to the conversation. I'll let you know how they sound.  I've been looking for something with a wider soundstage, even though I didn't know that's what it was called until reading Zen's description. I use A40's now so I'll be able to provide a good feedback on the comparison.  Shipping from Japan...should be arriving in 2 weeks.

These things are seriousy wide on the sound stage, great for teling where enemys are, behind walls running down hall ways, behind you etc.

AW sound is crap so they do not work on there, nothing does , but Ghosts and bops2 & 3 and mw3 wow just wow, Dead silence and awareness =  soundwhoring heaven :)

They are so light you will forget you have them on.

You all have some really amazing setups! I love it.
I've been upgrading my sound setup as it really does make the biggest impact to my games.
As many have said, gaming headphones are really awful in comparison to cheaper yet better alternatives out there.
I used to have the Astro mixamp as my main amp for gaming separate from my theatre system.
Then I changed my theatre system and bought Creative Sound Blaster X7 which replaced both my Theatre Sound System setup as well as my gaming setup due to the many sound settings that I can do with it.

The Creative X7's settings with its very customizable sound settings let me hear footsteps much more easily than my Astro Mixamp.
Astro have been promising customization on the mixamp since they announced it and till now, that didn't happen.

As for headphones, I use the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro which completely beat the Astro A40 headphone along with the Sennheiser PC350.
Not to mention, it's a lot cheaper than either of those 'Gaming Headphones'.
I'd highly recommend checking out the Custom One Pro at your local stores since it was a lot more cheaper for mine than it is at Amazon right now.

Note: Turtle Beach headsets spoil in just months of use. Don't ever get it.

Aye yall!

So, I have been contemplating for awhile about taking back my TurtleBeach XO Sevens and getting either a pair of Astro A40, or Astro A50s..? I like the quality I have with the XO7, but I hate the configuration to adjust the volume levels with the Microsoft adapter crap. (Thing in my opinion is awful) So my question is does anyone recommend the Astro over these Turtles? How much better is the sound quality or are they overrated? On bestbuy.com they both pretty much have the same customer feedback. So I'm just really looking for what the major difference is I'm going to see. (Already have done a review with these, so not really going to be butthurt to pay for a little better quality if its really worth it!)

Let your dude know what yall feel!

Gracias,

-Bleach

Well I just went through and exhaustive search and tested a few of the high end sets.  Here is my experience:

  • System: Xbox One
  • What I wanted: excellent sound of course, great mic experience and COMFORT!  The ability to adjust sound for various uses; music, games (FPS, Driving etc).
  • Value: I wanted quality but did not want to over pay for a marginal benefit.
  • Recommendations: this is important but I am cautious with reviews as there are so many "plants".

Search Results

  • Astro 50: this was my first choice, they had the top ratings.  This is a favourite of most pros.
  • Sound: Great, really super in game sound.
  • Mic: terrible my friends could not hear me in game.  I looked up help with Google and didn't get a solution.
  • Comfort: super comfortable right out of the box.
  • Wireless: not totally they require an adapter and are wired.  This was another drawback (apparently they are wireless on the PS4).
  • Sound Adaptability: pretty good but didn't keep them long enough to fully evaluate.  The mic issue ended the quest for me.
  • Value: pricey for sure but if the mic had been good it would have been worth the investment.
  • Recommendations: lots of positive reviews but several did talk about poor mic quality.  The mic as I recall was built in the earphone iand this was the same as my Polk Audio and the mic just doesn't cut it for me.
  • Turtle Beach 800X: this is my second choice, at the time they were new and very hard to get in Canada.
    • Sound: very comparable to Astro, in my opinion.
    • Mic: excellent, my friends told me that I was 10/10; wall to wall.
    • Comfort: good, took a bit of getting use to and adjustment to fine tune them once they settled in they were very comfortable.
    • Wireless: YES, totally just put them on and go!  Love it.  I can get up to get a refreshment, go into the kitchen and still carry on a conversation with my friends.  The social interaction with my worldwide friends is as important to me as the games.
    • Sound Adaptability: great, love the "Ear Force Hub" that is downloaded to my iMac and used to update and modify the settings.
      • The headset has controls the enable you to change the settings for types of games, music etc.  They take some getting use to and several times I hit the wrong thing.  Think I got if figured out now.  I saved the manual as a PDF and keep it on my desktop for reference - after a few weeks didn't need it anymore - just keep it for piece of mind.
    • Value: priced in line with the Astro's (about $400 in Canada with taxes).  I would have kept them except the adapter you plug into the Xbox malfunctioned and I took it back to Best Buy and they could only give me a refund as there were no more available in Canada at the time.  I liked them so much I though of ordering them from the US as I have a US address but decided against it.  They were just new on the market and I was concerned about early adopter "technical issues".
      • If I were in the market again I would purchase this no question in my mind.
    • Recommendations: at the time there were not too many but all I saw were very positive and I concur with their findings.  The most often mentioned negative was the comfort issue but some mentioned they found time and adjustment solved this.
  • Turtle Beach 500X
    • Summary: rather than bore you more than I already have let me say that this is very similar to the 800's except they are almost $100 less.  Comfort wise they take some getting use to and after a couple of months I found them OK - my ears sweat a bit but not enough to bother me.  Sound is great and it also uses the same "hub" to configure and update.  Sound is really top notch and these old ears could really not hear a big difference except sometimes I felt the Astro and 800 picked up nuances like footsteps a bit better.  My friends tell me I am crystal clear and they didn't know I changed headsets from the 800 to the 500.  It is totally wireless as noted above.

So suffice if to say I am very happy with my 500X's I can't really say I felt there was a big difference between these and the 800's certainly not worth the extra cost unless money is not an issue.  I am on every day for anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours so they get lots of use.

I hope this is of some help and I wish you luck in your search.  Love to hear what you decide and how it works out for you.

Worth the wait.

Which version of the mix amp do you have?

Mine is this one I have dolby digital on and the eq button set to top right.

I have the same mix amp as you pictured (Pro, I think),  and I was savvy enough to find the same settings as you recommended were also to my liking.

Crap AsNCo,  That amp is sick!  I hope I don't ever develop your ear, because these audiophile type units cost an arm and a leg!  Those HP's looked nice too.

Actually, it cost me only US$245.17(SGD$349) during its preview and pre-launch event.

And Creative has a lot of sales events on their own Web-Store. So it's best to check them out there and subscribe to their email newsletters to get their best prices.  :)

Experience wise, you'll notice the difference almost immediately. You can also really dial in on those footsteps and lower/mute other noises to give you a competitive edge which worked extremely well with Black Ops 3 beta.
