Why is my Anti-Bufferbloat not working?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys i get the same problem as the people above wit hthe high bufferbloat through xr500, i've managed to find a work around by using my sky hub > r1 > xr500 and i manage to get 1ms jitter like that, but i'd much rather take the r1 out the setup (i'm using CC on r1) instead of cc on xr500 since it doesn't seem to work properly, my ping plotter drops packets when it's activate with the upload side of the speedtest having jitter of 200ms+.

Not massively sure what the problem is since it isn't my line (tested without any router 20ms jitter) I think QOS is putting stress on the xr500 somehow. Everything else works fine apart from qos.

The QoS won't be putting stress on the router, it can handle gigabit QoS with no sweat. If PingPlotter is showing you that much it'll either be the program time is too fast, dodgy ethernet, upload not set correctly. Do you have PPPoE or IPv6? Have you done the tests lilstone showed?

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Disable the WiFi on the XR500, it will be conflicting with the wrt WiFi so that will help a lot. Then make sure you've entered your max speeds in Anti-Bufferbloats options. Set sliders to 70/70 and when high priority traffic detected and should be good to go!

@NetdumaFraser

I note I know absolutely nothing about netduma's anti-bufferbloat solution, although I am under the impression it uses fq_codel, at least in part. (?) Is how it works documented? Is it derived from the sqm-scripts?

I did want to call your community's attention to the latest effort of the bufferbloat project, "sch_cake", which solves a few problems, like per-host fq,

ack-filtering, docsis framing and so on. A paper describing some of its features is here: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1804.07617.pdf

We describe in more detail what it solves here: https://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/codel/wiki/CakeTechnical/

It is available as a backport to many linux versions and was just accepted into linux net-next which means it will be part of linux 4.19.

On the way to getting it mainlined (and underdocumented at present) are means to keep you dpi working even more sanely than it presently does.

I doubt your offloaded nat system can be made to work for per-host fair queuing implementation (which we think is the bomb), but what do I know?

Happy debloating!

my antibloating settings is not working.. it works when i reboot the router, then stops working out of nowhere.. i disable qos then enable, i try lowing the settings, etc and it wont work again until i reboot the router but i cant always reboot as i have other family members whos always connected and will complain if i always reboot while they are watching netflix etc.  i also have devices that go offline even they are online and being used when i have an AP connected to the network . it has the same SSID as the xr500 so devices can switch with ease but its causing issues with showing devices offline anytime im connected to the AP.

Your router is doing what mine has for a long time.. As is why I don't use it any longer..

Could you explain what you mean by 'it's not working'?

Here's how you can test if anti-bufferbloat is actually working:

  1. Set Anti-Bufferbloat to Always, and then turn down the sliders to about 40% or so, make a note of the speeds shown on the right.
  2. Now do a speedtest (maybe speedtest.net?) and see if the speeds you get match what was shown in Anti-Bufferbloat.
  3. If the speeds match, this shows that Anti-Bufferbloat is successfully managing your connection, so you can turn the sliders back up again and set it to When Priority Traffic Detected.
  4. If the speeds do not match, set Anti-Bufferbloat to Never, make sure you're the only device doing anything on the network, and then do a speed test. Open the options menu on Anti-Bufferbloat, and input the results from the speedtest you just did as Download Bandwidth and Upload Bandwidth.
  5. Now go back to step 1 and see if it's working correctly.

Sometimes IPv6 can cause issues, so try going to Settings > Advanced Settings > IPv6 and set it to Disabled if it's not already.

Also sometimes PPPoE can cause issues, how is your network connection set up?

I did a topic on this issue titled, "Anti-Bufferbloat Needs Work" quite sometime ago. I experienced way more Lag and Latency with the anti-bufferbloat settings on, compared to disabling it. So as of right now, I refuse to use the anti-bufferbloat because it simply does not work and needs to be fixed. I currently play online games with the anti-bufferbloat disabled and I haven't been experiencing any lag.

I agree that the anti-bufferbloat does not work and I leave it disabled as well.

Well it may not work for some people, it depends a lot on your network setup and total bandwidth. It's not a one size fits all solution.

In a situation where you have multiple devices in your household all vying for a slice of the bandwidth, anti-bufferbloat can greatly increase ping stability. Of course this comes at the cost of maximum speed for all devices while anti-bufferbloat is active.

I've played console games with multiple devices being used in the household. (streaming Netflix, Youtube on their phones, gaming on iPad, etc.) I've also played when no other devices were being used. In both scenarios, I experimented with the anti-bufferbloat settings enabled and disabled..(during early hours and peak hours) In my case, (and in other consumers case apparently) it unfortunately has not worked  which led me to write the post I did months ago. The lag and latency was atrocious. Literally night and day having anti-bufferbloat disabled rather than having it enabled. The concept is great, but  It is not performing as advertised and needs a lot of work. In fact, It was a representative at Netgear who suggested that I play with anti-bufferbloat disabled  not only to achieve the speeds my Internet service is capable of, but to also help eliminate the Lag I was experiencing.

I can't really see how that could be the case at all. I would be very surprised if that wasn't caused by a settings/setup issue. If you can give some detailed information on your setup, internet type and QoS settings (you were using) we can narrow down the cause.

My set up is: Xfinity 1 GB internet speed, Netgear CM1000 Modem, XR500 (of course)

Anti-Bufferbloat set to Always, 70% Download, 70% Upload.

I originally factory reset my router and set it up with normal or default settings

IP Address: Get Dynamically from ISP, DNS Address: Get Automatically from ISP, Router Mac Address: Use Default Address

Okay well that explains it then, you don't really need to use QoS at all as you're very unlikely to saturate your connection anyway. I'm surprised you even have much lag with that speed. Also 70% is only a starting point we recommend, we suggest experimenting with the percentages to find what works best for you as all connections are different. If you try to saturate your connection and use different percentages using this guide you can find one that works better for you http://support.netduma.com/en/support/solutions/articles/16000074717-diagnose-modem-internet-service-provider-issues

My anti bufferbloat is working on the download but not the upload on my xr500 that I just bought because my R1 with duma OS couldn't give me the full speeds because of hardware limitations. I get 200mb down and 24 mb up with xr500 other than 50 mb down and 24 mb up on r1. So my network is the same just switched the r1 out for the xr500. My isp requires pppoe with vlan 10 for fiber connection. No matter what I do or how I set it up or reset upon reset the upload qos doesn't work. It's like the upload qos doesn't activate at all. I think it is a bug here not how I set it up otherwise the download bufferbloat would'nt work as well. I'm seeing a similar pattern here with other users that have chosen to put the r1 between the xr500 and the internet or just not use it at all. My pings are around 300ms. I'm better off using my toaster for gaming. Not an easy router to setup and yes I have anti bufferbloat set to 'always' on. If i can't get the upload bufferbloat to work which is the main feature to me then I've just bought an expensive paper weight. I've asked for my money back from Netgear as this router has too many issues and doesn't work as advertised.

I'm connected directly to the ont fiber box which works fine with all my routers.

I've gone back to the R1 and sacrificed a lot of bandwidth. It works fine just with max 50mb download full speed and it's poor cpu maxing out 100% trying to run dumaOS. I thought I would post incase someone with the same problem had a fix before I return the xr500. Maybe the upload anti bufferbloat script won't run while using vlan 10 INTERNET option?

That is just a typo, it covers both consoles. DumaOS Classified Games covers the consoles so you do not need to add your consoles manually as they will be automatically prioritized.

Is this the same with R1?,

You could use the XR500 behind the R1, letting the R1 handle PPPoE & VLAN. It might be able to pass more speed through to the XR500 with no other devices connected to the R1 and QoS disabled and port forwarding 1-65535 to the XR500. Its either PPPoE or VLAN, perhaps the combination, the team are aware of this. If you're not already on the latest firmware please try that first.

Okay I’ll give it a try

No good. My R1 get's internet but won't pass it on to the xr500. I'm at my wit's end. This vlan/pppoe problem has been going on since dumaos. Most of New Zealand have fiber to the home and require pppoe and vlan 10 to authenticate. Netgear and netduma should let the customer know of this issue before they buy. It's not working as advertised. It should be easier than this. Over it

It should do, make sure that QoS and UPnP are disabled on the R1, make sure that the XR500 has a reserved IP, and make sure that ports 1 to 35535 are forwarded to it's IP address.
