Only one dashboard, so no sharing

I'm not sure what you mean by sharing exactly. Can you describe a sharing scenario?

  • I haven't seen such low hanging fruit since they forgot to put pants on my grandpa at his funeral, but I digress...

I don't understand this point, it is a router interface so you need to login to access it. Could you elaborate?

  • In answer to the previous and this question, I thought that the Dashboard might be accessible outside of the main router settings. I had hoped that there would be an ability to save a Dashboard so that multiple users could have their own and that one could have several configured Dashboards for different games/uses. As it stands, the Dashboard is only accessible by whomever maintains your home network and giving little ones access is inviting disaster.

...can force servers just like normal if some are not playing how you'd like, you get the same effect.

  • It's much more tedious that way. I don't normally game using only ping based connections, but I use it when local servers seem congested.

Favourite features from the R1 can be made if Netgear requests it but it is completely different software it is not meant to be a direct copy of R1 software.

  • I understand, but it's the only DumaOS I can comment on.

The R1 didn't show you the ping of all the others in the lobby but peer ping will be something we'd like to introduce assuming Netgear would like that feature.

  • I was referring to the peer ping, it was nice to have but I get that things change; doesn't mean that I like it.

You're actually on an older version, as far as I am told there will be a new update soon (it's already complete but going through final stages of testing). Script error does not happen in newest version.

  • I'm on the current version available, but I get what you're saying.

There is not VPN Client Support unless you use HIDEMYASS - so, basically, there's HIDEMYASS support.
That's nothing to do with us as everything in Settings was done by Netgear. I am sure the Netgear team would add additional services based on demand.

  • After 2 hours on the phone with Netgear (it seems that there were very few who were trained on the DumaOS and those who were weren't trained well) they stated that it was something that they are required to support, but that the code "came from NetDuma."
  • They stated that they would contact the engineers to see if something could be done and what the plans were, so... it's HideMyAss or no client VPN for the foreseeable future.

If you have any added Toolbars they can cause the bottom of the Dashboard to be inaccessible
You should be able to scroll down the dashboard assuming there are panels there.

  • I agree, that's why I mentioned it.  ;) Seriously, it could have been a result of me editing the dashboard in one browser and then refreshing in the other, I don't recall the test-case, but it just hides the bottom border making it appear that there should be more to the page.

DumaOS on Firefox looks terrible (default scrollbars) and often threw generic script errors on resizing panels that you have to acknowledge.
I can't comment too much on the scroll bars but we do want to remove them if possible. Script errors are fixed in the update coming that I mentioned above.

  • It just looks ugly; that's why I put it in "The Ugly."

Aware of that issue, I believe icons are not as big on new version. Though a refresh to fix the issue is not bad, future updates will include fixes for bugs found by users as is the way with software by big or small companies.

  • Just reporting what I saw.

The grid for the panels is fairly largely spaced and so it limits the layout possibilities.
I'm not sure what you mean as you're able to resize and move the panels how you want as well as extend the page downward.

  • In basic terms, it's like having an 8x8 grid verses a 20x20. You can configure the layout within the bounds of the grid, but they snap to the grid. Spacing from one size to another within the grid seems fairly spacious and that limits configuration options.

Chrome scrollbars don't have a definitive endpoint - this is only a problem for panels with buttons where one could think that they should be scrolling, but can't.
What do you mean by this?

  • Something found by my 8 year old. If there are buttons at the bottom of a panel with a scrollbar, there is no indication that the button area can't be hovered on to scroll. The user can feel as though they are in a scrollable area, but it doesn't scroll.

Multiple people changing settings for one router at the same time wouldn't make sense. The Geo-Filter allows 4 devices to be filtered at a time, Traffic Prioritization can prioritise more than one device at a time so I'm not sure what individual settings multiple people would need to have different.

  • And there's the rub, right? I'm certain that many people will expect to get this for their children or expect share the use in a house full of non-related people to use (i.e. roommates, friends, live-in Furry, etc.) only to find out that they would have to give them full access to the router to do so.
  • I don't feel that they should have access to change anything, but I do think that they should have the ability to see the metrics passively.

Having the dashboard inaccessible without Administrator credentials is a definite no-go for anyone wanting to share with family and friends.
Have covered this above.

  • Have covered this above, too.

Like I stated before, having some of these same issues on the R1 isn't as big of a deal for me as it's not my primary router. I hope that you don't feel that I was overly critical, I just gave my opinion on what I liked and disliked about the OS and what worked for me and what didn't. I still enjoy the R1 and appreciate the impact you all made to gaming as a whole and my experience in particular.

The point is after months and a year of delays and 'very soon" we get it dropped on us like it did. They release a pep rally Twitter message and post on here instead of a contrite and humble apology to it's loyal users and customers.

I say it again.... customers.

It is bad form.....plain and simple.

I can't use the Duma with my current setup unless I don't use my Android tx box because of the 5ghz limitations. When I didn't have the box, my wife would wear me out everyday about the wifi dropping. And the months of slow UI interface issues made it hard to tweak.

Many people have been waiting for the OS to help solve alot of issues with their setup and they can't be claimed for venting frustrations now.

Over a year of waiting.

They could have built a 2.0 version of the Duma and added the OS to it and we would've gladly paid them probably 300 for it.

Well, I vote with my wallet....and if they get a kick back from NG for every purchase, it won't come from me.

The next treyarch COD comes out this fall.....and I'll be in the market for a better router

I am personally sorry that you feel betrayed and are hurt from the actions of Netduma.  Let me ask you a very real question, do you know how NDAs work?  Because you act like they came out all look at the new Netgear router when that was just part of the netgear terms to buy their os...You are their customer, they do love you...don't feel hurt because they had some success, celebrate it with them and look forward to the future...

to dwell on the past is to admit you have no future.

So the upgrade to our Netduma, will have the same power as this new Netgear router? It should, after all we bought the Netduma because it was promoted as the best out there. And all the new innovations would keep us there. Now you've taken the best, and put in someone elses product. If we don't get that, we should at least get to trade ours in for the Netgear. Plus shipping, of course.

Customer service is a lost art. With the competition out there, the last thing you should want to do, is hurt your customer. If you read a bad review it goes a lot farther, than good. Sorry but that's business. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong about making a business decision to get better, but don't screw your base. They made your business successful.

Thanks for the responses Running, having people able to view the stats etc without having any control is a good idea. We'd have to look into the logistics of that.

This question I know is a shot in the dark but WTH.

Will NetDuma release the full power of the DumaOS on a more powerful router than the R1?  While I love my R1 and will continue to use it and support NetDuma in anyway I can I at the same time would like more powerful router without making any compromises.  For example NetGear router might not get all the features that the R1 will have.  That is one of the reasons I have not picked up the NetGear router and another is due to R1 receiving UPDATES first than lets say NetGear.  I know some will say you can get another router and use it as wifi and access point or whatever you want to call it.  I don't need to clutter up my gaming anymore than it already is.  I would prefer a Modem and then the more powerful R1 maybe call it R2 router with all the bells and whistles while ensuring that the R2 will receive all the latest and greatest updates first.  I would gladly throw money to NetDuma and the R2 router than lets say to NetGear.  Again I truly wish NetDuma continued success because their success means happy gaming for me/us.

Thank You

Thanks for the kind words! As you can imagine we have a lot on our plate right now so we're just focusing on the software for the moment but it isn't out of the realms of possibility for the sometime in the future.

I'm hoping that you're joking, but just in case...

I was stating that his comment concerning his need for reference to understand sharing, taken at face value and without context, was easily turned into a joke.

"Low-hanging fruit" is an idiom for "something that can be achieved very easily" and then I added in the pun about my grandpa's low-hanging fruit as a joke. I put it in pink so that it was easily recognized as a joke and not in the least bit serious. I have never seen my grandpa's low-hanging fruit, in the funeral home or otherwise, and for this I am very sorry.

I've been looking forward the DumaOS upgrade for a long time but always had a nagging feeling the R1 hardware was not quite up to the job. Therefore, the news Netgear would offer a DumaOS router was very appealing to me. Being in the UK it was frustrating to see the Netgear was not available in the UK but now I see it's marked as coming soon so that is good news.

Now I have a dilemma, in the UK me and just about everyone else bar those on Virgin fibre rely on DSL PPPoE connections. The R1 was never designed to support this and I've been repeatedly told it was patched in as an afterthought. The current PPPoE implementation always seems to be impact available broadband speed. The news of the Netgear meant I could have a DumOS powered router but that was powerful enough to act as the PPPoE client (like every other UK DSL router) but now we leant the Netgear won't have all the features of the R1 come April.

So, do I buy an Netgear XR500, get the new DumaOS (minus some features) or wait and upgrade my R1 in April which may or may not address the PPPoE situation.

These are the config option open to PPPoE DSL connected clients (note I'm suggesting use of other Wi-Fi AP's as the R1 is not very good in that respect and does not support 5Ghz, I'm not suggesting the use of Wi-Fi for gaming just to support all the other devices in a household)

modem > R1 (PPPoE) > Wi-Fi (Router in AP mode) ----- This configuration will experience performance issues as the R1 acts as the PPPoE client.

modem > Router (Wi-Fi) > R1 -----  In this configuration Wi-Fi clients bypass the R1

modem - Router - R1 - Wi-Fi AP ----- This configuration means using a second router in AP mode and using the first router to only act as a PPPoE client (expensive solution)

modem - Netgear XR500 ----- This config solves all the issues above but may not offer all the features of an upgraded R1come April

Hey RunningOnEmpty, thanks for your thoughts, I will comment on some of them below.

  1. Only one dashboard, so no sharing

I'm not sure what you mean by sharing exactly. Can you describe a sharing scenario?

  2. Dashboard is only accessible after logging into router using Administrator credentials (don't let your kids use it)

I don't understand this point, it is a router interface so you need to login to access it. Could you elaborate?

  3. Gone are the days of using ping as a way to connect to lobbies - set yourself in the ocean and you'll be gaming with the fishes

That can be added in the future but can force servers just like normal if some are not playing how you'd like, you get the same effect. Favourite features from the R1 can be made if Netgear requests it but it is completely different software it is not meant to be a direct copy of R1 software.

  4. No access the see the ping of all of the others in the lobby while gaming, only host or individually selected circles on the map

The R1 didn't show you the ping of all the others in the lobby but peer ping will be something we'd like to introduce assuming Netgear would like that feature.

  5. Not well coded for Firefox - use Chrome (fine for NetDuma, not Netgear)

You're actually on an older version, as far as I am told there will be a new update soon (it's already complete but going through final stages of testing). Script error does not happen in newest version.

  6. There is not VPN Client Support unless you use HIDEMYASS - so, basically, there's HIDEMYASS support

That's nothing to do with us as everything in Settings was done by Netgear. I am sure the Netgear team would add additional services based on demand.

  7. If you have any added Toolbars they can cause the bottom of the Dashboard to be inaccessible

You should be able to scroll down the dashboard assuming there are panels there.

  8. DumaOS on Firefox looks terrible (default scrollbars) and often threw generic script errors on resizing panels that you have to acknowledge

I can't comment too much on the scroll bars but we do want to remove them if possible. Script errors are fixed in the update coming that I mentioned above.

  9. On resizing the Geo-Filter Map, the icons will remain the size used for the beginning panel size unless you refresh the window (make the window larger and you have GIANT icons)

Aware of that issue, I believe icons are not as big on new version. Though a refresh to fix the issue is not bad, future updates will include fixes for bugs found by users as is the way with software by big or small companies.

  10. The grid for the panels is fairly largely spaced and so it limits the layout possibilities

I'm not sure what you mean as you're able to resize and move the panels how you want as well as extend the page downward.

  11. Chrome scrollbars don't have a definitive endpoint - this is only a problem for panels with buttons where one could think that they should be scrolling, but can't

What do you mean by this?

  12. Scrolling is an issue as you'll get caught in any panels with scrollbars, but it does exit once you reach the top of the scrollbar and continue (often an issue with this type of setup)

As you mentioned it's standard with that kind of setup and I think most people would expect that to occur as it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

  13. The Netgear, with the advanced hardware, is meant to be a primary router (a shared device), but the DumaOS seems to be made to be used by an individual.

Multiple people changing settings for one router at the same time wouldn't make sense. The Geo-Filter allows 4 devices to be filtered at a time, Traffic Prioritization can prioritise more than one device at a time so I'm not sure what individual settings multiple people would need to have different.

  14. Having the dashboard inaccessible without Administrator credentials is a definite no-go for anyone wanting to share with family and friends

    Have covered this above.

Will the new DumaOS come April support peer ping as the existing OS does today?

And again no response back from the devs ...

Let me ask a stupid questions ??

1. what about the loyal costumers that was early adorers since first month ????

will they get any discount code for the new router ????

2. what will be the main differences on software for R1 and netgear ??

3. Does it worth to spend 300usd for a router the basically dont works on game like COD WWII ?? like the previous software, if the game dont have P2P gaming what the new rooter suppose to do, in order to worth 300usd ???

4. I really can say that i was one of the early adopters that am disappointing of the existing software, as if you was not close to servers, you was lagging like shit .. so whats the point of upgrade ???

and last think

THANK you

duma for all lies for the last 1,5 year

you could announce the partnership and protect your costumers that bought a crab router the time who can buy a netgear !!!

There really should be some sort of discount offered to those who have the R1. I completely agree, but am rather doubtful it will ever happen. It would be a way to amend...

If you are on talktalk fibre you do not need PPPoE as you are on a LLU.

If it's FTTC how does that work? Where does the Netduma get it's WAN IP address from?

i am not sure of the specifics but it has to do with talktalk having their own equipment on the BT network in the exchanges and your phone number. If you are with talktalk it is done automatically.........Zennon on here who is a mod is well versed on this but don't know if he will reply to this post!

I use an openreach modem i got from ebay...........you can use any vdsl modem too.......I also have a draytek vigor 130 and all I had to do was read the settings to input in vigor interface.

With the openreach you just connect and that is it you see your dynamic ip in the wan page of the netduma.

@HappyLittleChap, there is no guarantee the PPPoE speed issue can/will be solved by April. The Devs would have to chime in on that one so if that's what you're waiting for it may be a gamble until there's further clarification.

I should think so due to it being most used in Destiny but I can't be sure.

We are separate companies. They would not give someone a discount to a customer who bought a product from an entirely different company.

One more request for the DumaOS on the R1, could you make it possible for those in the US to select the entirety of the US without including Canada and Mexico?

That kind of Geo-Filtering has been requested before but requires significant work so we'll have to see.

Cheers Fraser. I'm kind of inclined to upgrade to a Netgear router and forgo some of the newer features which I assumes would be introduced to the Netgear in time. Thanks.

It might be easier, as a quick fix, to allow for multiple instances of the filter radius; as long as the overlap is handled. If Ping Assist isn't going to be in DumaOS, then it would be nice if those of us in the US had something else that gives us more control of who we connect to.

i like that theres finally some progress though i have two question to Luke and Iain

@Iain

are Anti-Jitter and Anti-Spike still a thing?

i remember those 5ms max spike lab tests on 100% bandwidth load but there hasnt been any news on that since 2 years

the DumaOS is nice but so are other router OS too, the features are what separates Netduma from the competition

@Luke

why would your company want to team up with basically the biggest competitor you have in the gaming branch?

instead of launching a second "pro" router with better specs along side the R1 you boost the sales of a competitor, that really doesnt make much sense to me other than this being the first step of being bought by netgear alltogether

that CES fame could be all yours (well if you tried to push into the CES which isnt easy and pricy) but instead you share that fame with a big competitor, who in the long run will be the only one to remain in the peoples head

i wonder how many tech sites do get their facts right and mention "Netgear with an OS made by Netduma" rather than "Netgear with their new DumaOS" with the latter making it really hard for a newcomer to learn about Netduma
