Using ping plotter for the first time.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I know alot of you recommend us using ping plotter to test the network of our LAN and wan. So what I was wondering is will the free version of ping plotter be enough? Will it show what hops are being messed up etc. Or do we need to opt for a more advanced version like the standard or pro?

Yes its great, set interval to 2.5seconds and let it run for a few hours when you are not using the internet to much.

if you are in the UK bbq.com or . co.uk is a good place to test to. Google is very hit and miss so try to avoid that.

Twitter is ok as well.

I'm from the USA. I'm just feeling some Hardcore lag lately and I wanna see where it's all coming from so I can tell if it's something on my end or their end. Most likely it's theirs but If I have something to fight my argument with it'll be alot easier.

Will it tell you if the router is causing lag or modem? I guess I'm not sure exactly what it does besides tell you about your latency and jitter. I was hoping it shows the hops to so if I call tech support I'll have something to base off of

You can see if there is a problem at the router hop etc I had an issue and it helped me isolate to the modem, changed the filters and all sorted. There are enough people here to help you out with the results

Right, well this modem I have was fairly new anyways. I'm guessing it's just a line issue. Maybe somewhere along the route I'm picking up alot of jitter somewhere, seems to be my biggest issue. I watch my ping on bo3 go from stable to up to down again it's a mess but I still 4 bar every lobby. If I can isolate directly where the issue actually is occuring then it will help me fix maybe some of it. Like maybe I have a bad line running to my house or lines within the house. I'm honestly thinking I don't but there's only one way to find out and that's to run a test. I'm not sure what's a good site to ping to in the USA

For all I know my DSL modem could be crap again. With my last one before this one I was rubber banding constantly and my speeds would seem mostly accurate but latency was a b**ch lol. I know that all it takes is a jittery modem and I think even netduma jack said it can follow along the whole route of your connection.

Well....From what I can tell by pinging Twitter.com it appears as though my ping jumps up and down alot. My netduma ping tended to spike sometimes as much as 60ms and this was wired as well. It wasn't constantly happening but I was thinking it should of stayed around 1ms especially wired. It shouldn't connect wirelessly with the Ethernet plugged in.

If you were connected via wireless as well it may have done it through that, best policy is to disable WiFi in that scenario. Then try again and then do direct to modem to see if you get similar results.

Actually I'm gonna run it again tonight all while I'm sleeping that way I have some longer results. Then I will definitely post some pics. :) I didn't have time to set it up before I had to go to work unfortunately :/

You might not need a long-time graph/plot to tell if there's an issue.

If you graph 10-20mins when you get back from work, around peak time, that might be enough.

If it looks bad then we'll be able to tell straight away.

If it looks ok it's worth then running a longer test just in case it's an intermittent issue that didn't get caught by the short time period.

Also, if you run a short test and you mess some pingplotter settings up then it hasn't wasted hours of your time.

True, I'll get home and that will probably be peak time. I'll make sure to shut off other devices using bandwidth as well. Should I be testing using 100% CC? I feel like where it's one device it shouldn't make a difference. Also is there any other instruction to using it. I was just typing in Twitter.Com with the thing set to 2.5s and hitting play. Just wanna make sure I'm getting the most out of the ping plotter as I've never used it so I was mostly just observing whatever it was doing.

If nobody is home whilst you are testing 100 will be OK as nobody is soaking up bandwidth because you will see spikes galore,I'd put it at 70 to be safe,if you are getting huge spikes in jitter at 70 then id say there's an issue on the line somewhere, try and post screenshots for the us to take a look

Alright so I'll let it run for about idk say 10-15 minutes then screenshot the current screen using prntscrn button correct? I'll do the 70/70 even with nothing else connected like you said that way it will have no spikes period.

As you can see it went from really spikey to alot more stable than it was....Not sure why my PC is usually not on wifi well okay correction laptop but it shouldn't affect things when it's not connected via LAN. Also I use preemptive as it seems that works the best typically
