Gen 2 Astro A40.  Don't get the A50.  Now that a lot of devices use the 5ghz band, people have been having a lot of interference issues.  Back then, 5ghz band wasn't really being used, so wireless headsets (using the 5ghz) band was the BOMB....and the 2.4ghz was crap becasue of inteference.  Wired is the way to go......LESS ISSUES!!!!!

I know the feeling of wanting to upgrade.  I have the same headphones as you.  I want to get the akg k712 and a schiit tube amp to accompany my mixamp....ugh.   Or, the creative X7...

Would it be a good buy to get the mixamp w/the sennheiser g4me zero?

Can't comment on the sennheiser.  Never tried them.  But yeah, the mixamp is the key!  I would think that Astro fined tuned the mixamp to work with their own headset.  It's your call.  It does take getting used to the Astro sound though, especially if your coming from a different headset.

@ Sindonesia i would say yes unless you already have a mix amp of some kind. Are you just running your cans without a mix amp ? The mix amp is what really makes the difference in sound as your sound stage will feel like it got bigger by ten fold. You become super sensitive to the sounds of the game i.e. exo movements, someone re loading stuff like that.

I'm currently using the old dss with my Polk 4 shot headset with my XB1 and just the regular ps gold headset with the PS4. I'm just wanting something that offers comfort and the best sound for gaming. I really like the A50s because they are wireless but it doesn't really matter because I sit at my desk to play.

I got the Astro mixamp and the Audio-Technica ATH-ADG1 Open Air Gaming Headset

It also comes with a USB dongle which can be used for PC's and for the PS4. My mate has a XIM4 and the same headset, he uses the USB dongle for his PS4 because his XIM4 can't pass sound from the controller when cabled.

Works great on both PS4 and XB1.

I personally own these, along with the 598s, DT770s, Siberia v2. I use it w/ the Soundblaster ZxR and Astromixamp.

I'd recommend the ADG1, if you're in an open enviroment you should get the AG1 closed back edition.

If you're on a budget, you can get the AD700 and attach a modmic on it.

Sindonesia i agree 100% with the above statement^^^^^don't feel like you "have to" buy a gaming headset. But if you want to for the convience factor i get it.Again i'm not bashing A 50's i just feel there are better options for the money,I like the mix amp just not the head phones. And yes i have owned the A 40's and the A 50's,just not for me because of the other can's i've owed. You can write down some of MLE's recommendations and head out to Best buy (they have the 700's) or an audio store and check some of them out.

Also forgot to add wireless cans are just like wireless gaming IMO much better with the cord bro

Well, more tabs open for you then! It can be overwhelming and luckily the thread has its own search function. What's your budget?

Definitely more tabs to open.. Lol. I would like to stay around $300 give or take, the wife approved of $300 but I have some wiggle room.

You will definitely go over 300 if you go with the mixamp and game zero, but they will probably last you a long time.  You can also go with a sennheiser headphone and add a antlion modmic, which may keep the price down.  For me, I prefer to have my headphone separate from my mic, due to the fact that one may fail and I would have to replace the whole headset rather than just the mic.

I'm really leaning to Sennheisers, I've heard a lot about their sound quality. Now I guess I will get the mixamp and go to best buy to look and hopefully listen to some.

You can also go to sonicsense.com and listen to some reviews and headphone comparisons.

Good point about having them separate and then I would be able to use them for more than just gaming.

Yup,that's why i said eariler don't feel like you have to get a "gaming" headset. They work nice for movies and music late at night if the fam is sleeping and you wanna watch a movie or something.

I ended up getting the triton's at best buy (open box) for 89.00 dollars and i love the amp which is why i got them. And just use the senn pc 360's with it and they work great.Plus i got a back up set of cans that aren't the best but they will do for a back up.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've had TONS of experience with headsets! I would'nt waste any money on anything other than Astro A40/50's. (For console gaming - I have NO experience when it comes to PC gaming). In my personal experience NOTHING beats the Astro's! I've tried plenty of brands at both end's of the price spectrum, and I'll never purchase anything but Astro's ever again!

i have also audiotech. ad700 for cod ghosts and beyerdynamic DT770ml for advanced warfare. i dont use mic and never used mixamp. i use my own analog EQ :) people in ghosts always asked me how i can hear them, some ask me the same in AW... the mixamp doesnt do it for me (its to digital sounding for my ears) :( maybe i will give it a try one more time.... is it realy needed this mixamp?

edit: i think the sennheiser has to be good because they are BIG in audio engineering for studios all arround the world.

i had this turtlebeach gaming haedphones for MW2. i made music for many years so my ears are spoiled from studio headphones.

After 5 minutes I brought the turtlebeach back to the store :D

Being able to hear footsteps (well) in AW makes me want to ask you for more info on your analogue EQ! :)

Ive always had studio / audiophile headphones for music making mastering and djing , both the beyerdynamic t-1 and the sony mdr ma 900 have been great for music and for gaming, pin point accuracy like ive said before its like being there the latter being the most affordable and what i actually use now for gaming for their 3d imaging :)

i play with A50 , i love it :)

If you have no pb to be wired , i would recommend the A40 which has pretty much same caracteristics than A50.

Personally ,  if i had to buy a new headset, i will chose the A40 , because A50 is wireless  which initially, was a major asset for me( i try to chase maximum of wire from my setup, i hate to fight with them   ) but finally most of the time it is wired due to its poor  battery autonomy :(
