Nat Filtering

Recommended Posts

I noticed when I turned off UPNP and tick Nat Filtering from secured to open, I get an open nat on my most devices but I still get Nat issues occasionally. Im not entirely sure what that option does but I tried it out because I have multiple ps4s on my network playing at the same time and that was the only way we could connect with each other and with a person outside of my connection. Does that not fully open up the necessary ports or should i just UPNP or foward/trigger and live with my results?

changing to open means you are virtually opening up your router ports and making the router more vulnerable. How many ps4's do you have?

3 during some nights. I dont care about vulnerability. So im assuming I should keep upnp off when having that option open?

upnp should work, however you you could manually port forward for those ps4's. you would have to use 3074 3075 and 3076 as those 3 ps4's cannot use the default 3074 as only 1 can. upnp may not be opening up all the needed ports.

Is there any reason you’re turning UPNP off? You should be able to enable UPNP which will open most ports when their needed, and also toggle Nat filtering at the same time.

Really? Opening 3075 and 3076 will open ps4 as well?

I was just curious because as of late too, its been harder to find lobbies with the same settings I had before. Idk if its the new firmware or what.

uPnP should always be enabled for the most part...

For some games, it's recommended to set Nat Filter to OPEN for two or more consoles playing same game online at the same time.

I have two and need to use it. Have had zero issues with it and work fine for multi game environments:

If you was to only use IPv6 it would mean you wouldn’t need NAT as UPNP would be opening the ports needed direct for each IPv6 host straight out to the internet, IPv6 addresses should be routable over the internet.

I read a week or two ago about PS4 network now having IPv6 capabilities, it was something I was looking at testing because I had a firewall/router/modem that does not have UPNP and the only way around it for gaming would be to use IPv6 but started to get a bit complicated for me as I do not have much experience configuring IPv6 on Juniper equipment.

No one shoot me for mentioning IPv6!!!

I believe at this time DumaOS does not support IPV6, Fraser could tell you more.

If no one uses IPv6 then it will never be supported and have any bugs fixed ;)

I have IPv6 enabled on my XR500, its under the advanced settings.

If something doesnt support IPv6 it falls back to IPv4 anyway so the router will NAT the IPv6 address to the public IPv4 address again.

By using IPv6 in theory you are reducing latency also because you are not requiring for NAT to take place from your private LAN IPv4 address to the public IPv4 one (if IPv6 is supported at the far end that is!)

By enabling IPv6 I think it messes with the QoS on DumaOS unless its been fixed, thats why I don't have it on with this router, also Netgear filter ICMP on IPv6 which is an issue, my R7800 had the ICMP issue which stops full IPv6 compliance. ICMP is not meant to be filtered, but Netgear wont change things. Right now its DumaoS and IPv6 that is more of a concern for me.  http://forum.netduma.com/topic/23741-geo-filter-problemsanit-bufferbloat/page-2 Maybe Fraser has more news if this is all fixed now. I have to say it makes no real difference for me, I had IPv6 on with my R7800 (even with ICMP being filtered) but I'm fine using IPv4 for now until I know for sure that DumaOS fully supports it.

Also to get IPv6 to work well, your ISP needs to support it natively. IPv6 begins at the ISP.

My ISP has for years, although only Netgear routers seem to struggle with working with it in a straight forward manner (automatic should be straight forward)  Asus routers work first time on that side. Since I use a router for more than just gaming though having DumaOS work with IPv6 would be useful. (unless that's fixed in the next firmware release of course as I have not tried IPv6 with this router in a while now, just use IPv4)

My ISP has not adopted IPv6 as of yet. Still waiting. They will probably be the last ones... <_<. There quite a few that still haven't fully gone IPv6 yet.
