DNS question

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys...as I was updating the latest patch on my Xbox One for COD Infinite Warfare...I noticed how slow it was going.  My internet speed is 70 down 5 up.  The update was downloading at like under 1 mpbs up to like 5 mpbs.  It was super slow.

So I tried to google how to make it faster and I ran across DNS Benchmark.

Is this something I should mess with?  I don't even understand what a DNS is.  But, I did download and run the benchmark.  It suggested I turn off the DNS Relay...which I can't find on my Netduma.

So should I turn off auto DNS and try plugging the new fastest numbers in....or should I just keep it on auto DNS and not mess with it?

Just wondering what you all suggest.

Thanks

You could try changing the dns settings in the xbox network settings,I've done it in the past when i was having slow download when updating/installing games and it instantly put my speed to what I was paying for,I changed it to Googles DNS primary 8.8.8.8 secondary 8.8.4.4 just bare in mind Googles DNS can be hit and miss aswell, you can allways go back to automatic if it does

FYI: Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. They maintain a directory of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access websites based on IP addresses.

I've tried it before, made no difference. Sometimes the slow download can be due to high demand. On PS4 I have had some success if its really slow with pausing the download for a few seconds then resuming it.
