Low Ping Doesn't Mean Smoother Games

So I found one set of dedicated servers that seem to give me maybe a 60/40 or maybe 70/30 good to bad lag. The ping tends to jump between 30 to 60 ms. I connected to a closer set of servers that had a ping between 20 (sometimes slightly less) and 30 ms but the lag was much more noticeable. This has happened before.

Could anyone explain why that might be the case? Just trying to understand all this stuff.

Good ping is what you want to shoot for.  But, other players with really bad connections can still screw up that server.  If you're playing Ops3, they have had actual server trouble in a bad way this week.  Have had multiple issues such as losing gun camo's, reset calling cards and actual server shutdowns for periods of time.  Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to tweak on our end until they get their end straightened out which is hopefully soon.

I understand, I was just curious if it could be server quality regardless of ping or something else I might not have thought of. I have heard some mention that Azure (think that is their name) servers for XB1 are the best, could it be another type of server that could cause the issue of lag. Still learning all this stuff and not really too worried, just interested. For example, I am from Illinois and on a more consistent basis I hook up to Iowa servers. They have been both good and bad for me. On average my PING bounces from 35ms to 65ms. Now once in awhile I hook up to Illinois and on the netduma control panel it reads under 25ms but the lag is so bad. Happened a couple of times on the Illinois one. Not complaining, its just interesting to see what affects the games.

I suppose what you are saying is that it is possible the Illinois server might be pulling people farther away like closer to the east side or with weaker connections and that might bring the lag. Again, this is just out of curiosity. In a perfect world since I am from Illinois, it would be ideal to get Illinois servers with the lower ping and benefit from it, but we all know it will never be perfect.

Having a low ping means your game information reaches the server quicker. So it should be a much smoother experience. If you've found other servers that work best for you then that's great. The beauty of the duma is being able to force those games.

Jitter is a big issue with the dedicated servers used in BO3 (especially Choppa servers), low ping is one thing but consistency of it is key.

A 20ms dedi that fluctuates to 50ms every other second is terrible for COD, a lot of WTF moments for sure with that kind of line deviation...

Normally in a time sensitive game ping is king, however the call of duty franchize is a law unto itself, ive lost count of the number of times i have had a cq gunfight both shoot at the same time, get 2- 3 hitmarkers then fall down dead, only to see the other player 2 or 3 baring and the in game ping rise to 150 plus during the replay, it seems to me that activision are manipulating game data to try and even out the difference in ping, but there is something majorly wrong when a player getting a 7-8ms ping to their server is losing to players who should not even be playing online games with such high pings.

Its such a shame i will be ending my 7 year association with Call of duty, but im fed up with the lag, the dlc's, the micro dlcs and cod points, they seem to be getting worse each year and to think they now have three years to get it right, yet roll out non stop hotfixes and patch updates and still they cant get it right.......rant over lol

So I have come to the conclusion that there is only one location that gives me a decent game and it is not the closest nor the lowest ping. It's still hit or miss whether I get a laggy game but it does seems to reduce how oftenI will get a laggy game and by connecting to this server it does seem to reduce how drastic most of the lags are if that make sense.

Things can get completely ruined by dodgy connections in the lobby, I was seeing a lot of wtf's earlier so I set up ping plotter running on my line to check if that was the issue while I was playing - really expecting that to be the cause...

Then I had a really rough game, got totally battered and just broke even with my try-hard class.

I got continually wasted by a couple of bouncy 2-bar players (fluctuating connection) on the other team, checked my graph afterwards and it was lovely and flat - not a single blip on the line for the duration of the game.

I checked the geo filter and had to zoom out to find where one of them was, it was so far across the continent I don't even know which country it is.

To add insult to injury their KD was about half of mine and they were tactically inept thumbless scrotes just wandering about blind-firing like Stevie Wonder but I still couldn't kill them.

The same thing seems to happen when they're on your team and get near you, as if their connection is so shit it's a black hole of internet poverty.

Lag compensation works in favour of those with poor connections.

The majority of us with low pings and good connections should not be punished, but game publishers feel the need to be inclusive rather than elitist to sell more crap and we all suffer for it. Except those laggy bastards - they don't care if they're ruining your game, so block them in Host Filtering to avoid dealing with them again.

I feel like I should say that that isn't the case but I can't say it and honestly not doubt myself when I do.

Lag Comp isn't supposed to punish the better connections at all, it's just supposed to determine where people are in game when bullets are fired.

I definitely get twatted more often than not by the awful connections though...

I see far too many of the lobbies topped by a lower than 4-bar player but I also see plenty of sub-4-bars scraping the bottom of the leaderboard.

I'm not going to say that lag compensation is a problem because it really is necessary but perhaps in BO3 it has not be executed as well as it could be.

I will however say that uneven and shitty connections and lag absolutely ruins games.

And I'll leave it at that.

And Treyarch have made a mess with their latest hotfixes. Or hotfux as they should now be known.

I have found the server with the steadiest ping to be my best bet not the closest or best ping but ping that stays at the steadiest number

Why I don't know or care because it works LOL. Its a Jittery subject
