Slow download speeds, tried with multiple settings. Can't seem to get more than 200 - 300 Mbps in actual download speeds (not just tests)

As the title states, I cannot seem to get my download speeds to their correct values. I have 900 Mb down / 40 Mb up however when doing misc speed tests and monitoring download speeds of games in consoles (with all other games / apps closed) my download speeds rarely go above 200 Mbps and usually sit around 80 - 150 Mbps. For reference, I'm the only one home / using the network and all tests are via ethernet.

I've also noticed that web browsing via wifi is painfully slow at times.

Settings I've tried:

- No QoS

- Congestion control On, Auto, Never

- Various % set with congestion control on.

- Prioritize the traffic of the device I'm attempting downloads on.

- Disabled Adblocker on the device I'm attempting downloads on (Have AdBlocker permanently disabled on all gaming devices).

- GeoFilter off.

I'm not sure what other settings to try to tweak but on my previous router, my PS4 Pro was able to download 60 GB games in 10 ish mins, give or take a few, however my Xbox Series X takes at least 2x - 3x that to download the same size Game. i know that my network will not constantly be getting 900 or even 800 Mbps down, however 500-600 is not an unrealistic number.

Happy to provide whatever info I can to assist.

Thanks,

Hi - Thanks for the response. Firmware version is 3.0.179 and yes, I actually just had to do a factory reset two days ago because my router lost internet from my ISP / modem and would not recover, even after reboot. Something similar just happened not too long ago (an hour or so) as well but a reboot resolved the issue.

Hi Fraser, thanks for the response. My setup is just cable modem, straight into R2. All home devices are connected to the R2, around 10-ish total devices but usually only ever 4-5 connected at once. I still have my previous router, should I connect my old router to the R2 and put it in the DMZ, then connect all misc / non-gaming devices to it?

Yes, speeds in bandwidth settings reflect my ISP plan.

Update - Disabled congestion control, ran the connection benchmark tests and it looks like the R2 is only able to pull 300-500 Mbps down but when I connect directly to my modem from my laptop, I constantly see download speeds near what I'm expecting. I recently ran all of these tests just prior to purchasing my R2 as I updated my internet package in within the last 3 - 4 months.

NOTE: I had to reboot my router 3 times during this process as it kept losing internet connectivity. This is the 5th or 6th time I've had to do this in the past week, a couple of times before factory reset and then a couple of time after. Something definitely seems to be going on, I've seen quite a few others on the forums posting similar scenarios as well. Happy to try to send along syslog files or whatever to help.

QoS but no Congestion Control:

speedtest.net -

No QoS at all:

speedtest.net -

Looks like disabling QoS adds about 60 - 100 Mbps more. Realistically, I don't trust speedtest.net with all the issues they've had in the past with inaccuracies and rumors of prioritizing initial requests and other methods of padding speedtests. DSL reports has always been very consistent.

Okay well that seems to be probably the maximum you can get, you could try disabling some of the options in WAN such as flood as this could help as well. Regarding disconnects could you have a look here please? https://forum.netduma.com/topic/33667-having-disconnect-issues-please-post-here/

Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear that.

So through speedtest.net you're seeing the correct speeds, but Connection Benchmark is showing far less, correct?

Are you using QoS? If so, try fully disabling it and retesting.

With the Wi-Fi, are you using Smart Connect?

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear you're having this issue. I would recommend you start a new topic so we can just focus on you. Have you disabled QoS fully from the Congestion Control option menu?

Set your bandwidth speeds to 1000/1000 and then re-test please.

It’s set at that as well and still only getting 600 now sometimes it goes down to 450 so I’m not sure what the problem is

Disable IPv6 in WAN/LAN as well as the protection options in WAN please and try again.

Put the device you're testing in the DMZ and then try it again please and see if you get any higher.

Get your PC LAN IP from the device itself or the Device Manager, then enter that into the DMZ function on the R2 LAN Settings, then apply and do a speed test.

Sorry for late reply just busy with work and kids but that didn’t do the trick anything else I could try?

Do this please:

  1. Re-enable QoS if disabled
  2. Remove any Traffic Prioritization rules and disable Classified Games rule
  3. Reset Bandwidth Allocation even if you haven't used it
  4. Set Congestion Control percentages to 100% and select Never
  5. Try a speed test, what do you get?
  6. Disable QoS fully
  7. Try a speed test, what do you get?

Just as a follow up:

I'm still experiencing issues not getting all of the available connection bandwidth that I should be with my plan. Below there are 2 different sets of 3 speed tests. Set A is with my PC hard wired directly into my modem and Set B is with my PC hard wired into my router, which is hardwired into my modem.

tldr:
PC to Modem: Consistent downloads above 900 Mbps and uploads right around 40 Mbps
PC to NetDuma R2 to Modem: Consistent downloads around 600 Mbps and uploads around 38 - 40 Mbps.

No Netduma:

With Netduma:

r2_speedtest_net.PNG.310af1491de42269d5e4e78f7a5c71e6.PNGr2_spectrum_speedtest.PNG.9c17b34c29aae6cfeb1547bc9ed8ac17.PNGr2_dslreports_speedtest.PNG.e845a3ba467bec56b5f3497acedf8bc8.PNG

speed tests were taken with: spectrum.com/speedtest (ISP Provided), speedtest.net, and dslreports.com

Given these results, I can say unequivocably that the R2 is the cause and losing 300+ Mbps in download speed. This is a significant performance issue for a router that was $175 and 300 Mbps is not a small amount, I'm losing more in download bandwidth than what a lot of people get period.

Up to this point, I've been very patient, understanding and willing to deal with it but now not only am I getting disconnected from the internet every other day (or more), I'm losing 1/3 of my bandwidth, and experiencing some other odd connectivity issues while working from home. I would like to get this escalated as much as possible and I'm willing to help look into what's going on if someone wants to give me SSH access to the router. All of these issues have persisted with both the previous software version and the latest version.

Can someone please address this, directly, without any assumptions that it is my ISP or other non-R2 issues?
