Help on XR500 recent purchase

Recommended Posts

Hi all

ive recently purchased an XR500 as I was getting some large lag spikes with my virgin broadband. I’ve been playing apex legends and rocket league a lot and was getting a ping of around 25 to the London server on apex (I’m UK based)

i was hoping that the XR500 would improve the ping however it has become slightly worse since installing! My friend who are part with gets a 13 ping and I was hoping I would get to sub 20.

whilsy I’ve set up QoS (70/70) and favoured my PS4 heavily on bandwidth allocation and also setting up the geo filter for 1200 I am still seeing lags. The lag is still unstable I was getting between 35-65 playing rocket league earlier but I don’t know what else I can do to improve. Does anybody have any suggestions? I’m thinking of returning the router as £250 is a lot of money for zero improvement.

i do play via Ethernet by the way

So you've set Anti-Bufferbloat to 70/70? Have you tried setting it to Always to make sure that it's taking effect? Are the Download Bandwidth and Upload Bandwidth options in the Anti-Bufferbloat side-menu set correctly? Do the predicted Download and Upload speeds next to the Anti-Bufferbloat sliders reflect the actual speeds you get?

Hi alex

yes I am happy that it is all set up correctly and the speeds are reflective of the tests that I carried out prior to connecting any devices (other than laptop to run the tests)

the only other thing I’m thinking of is port forwarding but this is going beyond the realms of my understanding!! I’m not sure if it would help anyway!

Port forwarding shouldn't be necessary because the PS4 traffic should automatically be prioritised as long as DumaOS Classified Games is enabled on the QoS menu. If you wanted to be double certain, you could press ADD DEVICE, select your PS4 and choose Games Console.

You could also try using the Geo-Filter to filter out bad connections.

  • Add your PS4 to the Geo-Filter
  • Set it to Filtering Mode
  • Set your location to the middle of the ocean
  • Bring in the radius so that it's tiny
  • Open the side-menu of the Geo-Filter map
  • Turn off strict mode
  • Set your Ping Assist to 30
  • Turn off fast search

Now any connections over 30ms in ping will be filtered out.

Thanks Alex I have done all of that but not much better. The geo filter is where I was watching my ping go up and down whilst playing rocket league.

to be honest I’m thinking of disabling the geo filter when I play apex legends as I just get kicked out all the time and can not reconnect to the EA severs. The players I party up with get pit through to the game so I have to keep closing the game and re starting. It’s been a bit frustrating really. I had hoped this router would solve a lot of issues for me

I was getting kicked out of Apex and World of Warships and I worked out that under geo filter I simply select spectating mode and that solves the kicks and I live with it.

In saying that a few friends have moved away from Virgin and they had problems with constant lag and poor connections. They may have been unlucky though but there is a thread on how to test your line just in case with Ping Plotter.

Thanks for the info. I’m looking to move away. I did a think broadband test on my line prior to buying the router but being honest that went red after adding the router and since putting my SH3 into modem mode I’m not entirely sure how to set the test up to measure directly from the router

Hopefully the mods will know and it might shed some light.

i don’t know much about that test, I’ve just tried it and I’m fairly sure it’s similar to dslreports. It came up with my connection being poor but I’ve a very good connection and have no issues. I believe it’s something to do with deep packet inspection on the 500 that makes the results off.

it will always shor red unless you enable icmp pinging in wan settings! The TBB Graph requires icmp pings to gather it's information.

Also Virgin are the worse isp for gaming there is.

Your Apex ping is very good at 25 and sounds like you’re connecting to the closest possible server so there’s no improvement that can be made on this as long as you didn’t have local congestion before, if you did then the router will help lower it! What is your apex ping now? Is your rocket league the same or worse? When do you notice the spikes occurring? Is it every time you play or during peak times?

The apex situation is annoying because I have a 25 ping to the London server but it rarely puts me on that server I usually get put on the Frankfurt one (by the looks of the map on the geo filter) and the ping to that hovers between 40-60. If I set the geo filter to 500 it sometimes connects me to the London server but more often than not kicks me out and I can’t log back into the EA servers. I’ve turned the geo filter off now.

the spikes do seem to come mainly through peak times tbh but then I don’t get much of a chance to properly measure other times as I don’t really play them out of peak times!

ive attached my think broadband test that was taken prior to the router. All the spikes bar the one at 4am we’re when I was gaming.

Your connection is not the best, but that is to be expected with a virgin connection. They promote speed rather than quality of service and they are a poor choice if you are an avid gamer but as a downloader or stream watching service they are good. Here is a good quality bt line of mine, the red part is when I had to reboot router for testing purposes.

Wow that’s a great line!

mine is just about to come to an end with virgin. Can you recommend a good provider. Everything I am reading points to sky or Plusnet, who are, incidentally, my previous two suppliers!!

talktalk are the best out of the major ISP's. I use idnet as although their prices are a little higher you get what you pay for. They are british, with british tech support and their fault and repair service is second to none. I lost internet connection last wednesday afternoon, I had an engineer at my house at 8am the following day repairing my issue!!!.........it was a faulty port in the street cabinet that was to blame.

If when you can’t connect to the servers from the lobby there is something blocked on the map then add it to your allow list and that should resolve that, hopefully then allowing you to force the server you want. Sounds like VM is definitely the cause in peak times, I have VM and experience the same in peak times.

This expensive router still need improvements, i too run into issues with certain games. followed a guide on here for optimal setup for apex legend on xbox one and still getting error stating connection to server timed out (code:Leaf) when filter mode is on in geo location. when having filiter mode to spectating mode then it start working properly on top of that i notice my connection will completely drop or get disconnected sometimes. i enjoy this router but sometimes it acts up.

We're always continuing to make improvements behind the scenes, that won't stop. Please make a new topic regarding your issues and we'll be happy to help! Meanwhile please flush the cloud to make sure you're running the latest Apex Legends cloud database.
