Gaming Monitor or Not?

I have a samsung JS8500 4K I play on. Gaming mode has a 36ms response time. Would I see much of a difference with a gaming monitor. I have noticed many of them have a 1ms response time

36ms isn't bad at all, but a good gaming monitor will at least cut that in half.  I use to play on my 46" plasma with around 33 ms input lag, and then I switched to my asus gaming monitor, the reduction in input lag was nice, but the primary benefit for me was the image clarity, the colors just seemed to pop, and I was able to get the perfect viewing distance.  This led to me being able to more easily spot the opposition and that's what helped me most.

Gaming monitors IMO are worth it but some TV's are just as good as gaming monitors, response time wise and no monitor has a 1 ms response time, they are talking about something completely different.

I think gaming monitors are definitely worth the purchase. I play a lot and it does reduce the input lag pretty drastically.

I played for years on highend Plasma TV's my latest is a Panasonic 55 inch and it is pretty good.  Last year I changed to a 27 in Benq Gaming Monitor and wow what a difference.  I know I make this point often (too often) that I am older and have issues you probably don't have but i just want to keep things in prospective.

The monitor was well worth it for the following reasons - some of which have been mentioned:

  • Clarity -- for me two things made a difference

First and foremost was that the images are just that much sharper and the colour/contrast make things pop!

Secondly is proximity being closer made it much easier for me to see details that I was missing on the big screen.

  • Speed -  don't know if it is refresh rate or what but things just seem quicker (could be I am having a senior moment or two) but works for me.  Don't get me wrong the big screen was pretty good but not quite the same.
  • Colours - to me the colours seen more vibrant; I think the TV washes them a bit.

Did it help my game play - no - nothing can help that but it certainly made my game play that much more enjoyable and I do have more games where I surprise myself.

Hope this of some help, bottom line was it worth the bucks absolutely.  One caution do some research and make sure you get a real gaming monitor that has good reviews and ratings.

Yes some tvs have almost as good input lag times, but where I find they fall short is on response time.  A good gaming monitor will have less than 16 ms of input lag, and less than 2ms of response time.  A good gaming tv will usually have less than 32ms input lag but a response often time above 6ms.

I've been throwing around the idea of buying one, but my problem would be location. Right now I'm hard wired to a 55" Panasonic in my front living room. The only place to put it and be wired is in the garage right next to the living room. It's been really cold lately and Summers can get pretty hot so that is what has turned me off of a monitor. I even hinted about a it for Xmas.

Also I'm so used to playing on my 55" (previously on my 80") I don't see how I can go to a thirty something inch screen.

Switching from playing on the TV to playing on a monitor, which was designed to have fast, twitch style games played on it (I have a Benq XL2420T) made a WORLD of difference for me.

Other than the NetDuma, I would say adding a monitor has made the single biggest positive change in my Call of Duty online career/stats and enjoyment.

You win more gunfights, you can evade easier and you can play better if you minimize the input lag.

As Fuzzy stated above, and Zennon has exposed in several threads, no monitor currently offers a true 1ms input lag for gaming that has been discussed here.  And if it was, it was quickly buried in the lost interest category because the price would be astronomical.

In my case, I went from around 100mS display lag (home theater system plus large TV) to 10mS.  I definitely noticed the difference in gaming because of that change.  I started winning a lot more gun fights after changing to the monitor (Benq RL2460HT).

As stated above, don't trust the "1mS response time".  You can see the measured display lag on http://www.displaylag.com.  If you are going from 36mS to around 10-15mS display lag, you will only notice a very slight difference in your gaming performance.  Most gaming monitors (like Benq) have great black equalization and other features that may help more with gaming if you have games with dark maps and graphics.

With a gaming monitor due to the monitor size, you can see all parts of the screen (i.e. checking mini map and things around the screen) a little easier than you can with a large TV.  On the converse, the enemies on a monitor will be smaller compared to a large screen.  It took me a little while to get used to the smaller screen size of the monitor (24") compared to my 55" TV.

Do you use a home theater system?  If so, their display lag should be taken into account too.

You can use a powerline adapter to hardwire in whichever room you would want.  I have one and the latency is the same for me, only thing I loose is a little bit of my bandwidth, which doesn't really matter for online gaming.

There you go now I know my  problem -- I just haven't gotten use to the smaller "enemies" on my smaller screen - can I use that excuse, please?

LOL I try to make every excuse for my slow reaction, bad eye sight and not being a great player.  My older eyes are not the same as the "young whipper snappers".  I am often watching my son, nephew and their friends play, and many of the times I never see what they are shooting and getting kills.  I would have never saw them, which is why I do much better and close to medium ranges.  It is definitely easier to see on a 55".

I've played on these:

Samsung PN51D7000   51" Plasma     38ms response time

Asus VS278Q-P        27" monitor   11ms response time

Sony KDL-55W802A    55" LED LCD    17ms response time

Currently using the Sony.

I have the Asus set up but stopped using it because I prefer the larger picture and because I couldn't tell the difference.

If my connection to the host was good, I was top of the leaderboards no matter what monitor I used.

If you are really worried about input lag, just use a CRT.  Faster than any LCD, LED, or Plasma.

I use 4 asus vn247h monitors which are 1ms, they look beautiful, have thin bezels and the input lag reduction is nice

Again no TV or monitor has 1 ms input lag it's impossible. The speed of light  can only goes so fast... :D

Ended up buying this. It's awesome.

With a benq and a netduma I'm left with no excuses if I get beat

I think that's a very solid monitor,I have one myself and love it.I think you'll be more than happy with it once you dial your settings in on it to your personal preference.Which will take some tweaking as everybody is different.

^^

Just purchased one of these. Fantastic monitor....

I liked Photo Picture Mode most because black is black. Not a washed out grey. Do you think Picture Mode is it OK for gaming or should I stick with one of the Gamers presets?
