Black Ops 3: Competitive Reveal (I watched it and....)

Dillinger

Recommended Posts

"Oh great, another Black Ops 3 thread by Dillinger.  Does this guy have any other interests or did he buy the router for one game??"

I am like a kid before Christmas right now with Black Ops 3 on the horizon!  Granted, I haven't played it yet.  And, I may have to have an arm ripped from the socket when the local clam eating Gorilla gets melted by a Specialist Pistol and goes absolutely Wookie-Shi'ite, but it's a cross I bear.   :)

"Who cares about competitive?"

Well, if you are a smart player, you do.  And here's why.

These guys have their own subculture that is CoD, and they live it for 18+ hours a day, every day.  There isn’t a CoD “off-season”, and they play tournaments every weekend, both Saturday and Sunday.  They grind the shit out of these games, so if someone is going to “discover” something, it’s probably going to be them.  When a new game, or patch, drops – these guys will be able to tell you, within the first couple of hours, what is OP, what has now been balanced too far the wrong way and what flat out sucks.  This is their “job” and they take it very seriously if they want to win.

Say what you want about seeing your favorite YouTuber play a new game against other YT’ers and members of the media, and ripping their best games to show you.  You don’t get to “see” the game because the players aren’t really on the same level.  A YT’er who got in invited doesn’t necessarily play the game for real (*cough* several “big” channels *cough*) and a press pass doesn’t mean you can play the game, it just means you have connections.

Watching the Competitive reveal, I learned quite a bit about the game that I would like to share with you and open a discussion.  For those that haven’t seen it, here’s the link (I will be referencing this video with gameplay timestamps below):

https://youtu.be/xeFbgEbFzv8

There is a lot of fluff and “talking with Treyarch” – so here are the times of the games themselves:

Game one: Hardpoint on Combine (46:15)

Game two: Search and Destroy on Hunted (1:07:55)

Game three: Uplink on Evac (1:28:06)

Weapons are always a topic of great discussion, so let’s start there I guess.

uDAH1u0.jpg

AR: The AR’s are very good.  The M8 is returning, so you burst fire AR guys can look forward to having your sweetie back.  The M8a7 (I think) just melts people and has a nice profile so it doesn’t take up too much screen (53:30 – Nice three piece).  The Man-o-War is an AR that kind of looks like the BAL, but it appears to be way more accurate and it sounds sick!  If you watch the video link above, there is a guy who starts the first game with it at about the 46:06 mark and gets a couple of quick kills.  A different version, the HVK-30 , starts at about 1:30:30 and runs through the guy getting a care package dropped after a death.  11 seconds on a care package drop?!  Holy hell am I going to be stealing “other people’s packages” (you down with OPP?  Yeah, you know me).

Subs: The Subs seem good, in close combat, but do seem to be a bit underpowered at range when facing an AR, as it should be.  There is some ADS gameplay of the Kuda, the most popular SMG during this gameplay, at about 48:35 and that chains nicely into some silly coverage of Tommy (48:46) running around with that golden Hand Cannon of Doom (Annihilator Pistol).  Some more ADS Sub gunning at (1:28:40)

I can tell already I am going to hate and love this special ability…LOL  If the guy can aim, it’s going to suck, but you can see even when a pro gets pressed, that hand cannon doesn’t do him much good on that Hardpoint, jumping around the Humvee and getting drilled (55:00 or so is where it starts).  LOL

Pistols: I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw, or didn’t see, from the pistols.  Not many players switched to them during the three games played, and when they did, they weren’t over-powered at all.  Here are a couple of examples: (1:14:40) & (1:15:48) Both are Merk, who is a veteran of a few years of professional duty.  In one, he swims, mantles with his RK5 burst pistol and gets absolutely WRECKED at close range.  The next, he wall runs; mantles through a window with the RK5 and meets the business end of an AR.  Again, like it should be.  ;)

Sniper Rifle(s): Didn’t see too much sniper game play, and I hope there is a reason for that.  You can see one brought out at the start of Search-n-Destroy at about (1:07:55) and again at (1:15:28).  I only saw a couple of lying prone in the doorway kills, where Merk ripped Kivi's head off, but still....

Shotguns:  I didn’t see any shotgun gameplay.  Not even on Hardpoint.  This could make me happy if the shotguns suck. LOL :P

There is a lot of specialist gameplay, and you get to see a couple of score streaks in use.  Something that I thought was an “about time” was they switched up the score streak earn slots a bit.

Time to Kill:  I didn’t see anything that gave me any concern, honestly.  There are a couple of clips I flagged for you guys to watch for yourself and see.

Hit double jumping (DJ is slow) for a door (49:38)

Hit and can react (52:42)

Balance:  This is going to be interesting and I suspect it will garner a lot of discussion between now and Dec.  I really like what Treyarch did with the bans and protect systems for Competitive play and I think this was something that CoD needed to keep going.  This will create a much larger META game, within the actual game itself.

One of the things that the community has been split on is whether Treyarch focused too much on Competitive with Black Ops 2.  The argument was they focused too much on competitive and didn’t do enough work on the “rest of the game”.  You know, the stuff that was banned out of the gate like the Hunter Killer (Flak Jacket occasionally works Dave) and the KAP-40 pistol, the FAL, C4 and etc.

This fragmented the game into the Pro side and the Public side, which some feel caused “all the headaches”.

This time, the whole game is available and the teams pick and choose what will be banned for that game and what will be protected by a vote system where each player get to pick one item to BAN or one item to PROTECT.  4 players, 4 votes, each side.

While MLG will most likely ban certain items, like C4, having the majority of the game itself playable to the pro circuit will quickly tell if a gun/streak or special ability is OP or UP (Over or Under powered).  All they have to do is download the file from the previous week’s games and see what was protected and what was banned.  Whatever was banned is most likely OP and whatever was protected was either really OP, or was the second best choice.

I’m not ready to say this will be the definitive CoD to date, or that I will love it in Dec and still love it in Feb, but what I am ready to say is this:

TAKE MY MONEY AND GIVE ME ACCESS DAVID!   :P  :D

For a game that they played on LAN it was still laggy. Was not impressed but still looking forward to it. Now if Dill and I party up and run trains on noobs with the power of the R1 well by golly I am game!

This is in German, but it shows that weapons, perks, score streaks, attachments, etc.

Based upon this video, I put together is spreadsheet to see how all the stats compare.  What it revealed was how they are trying to make sure all weapons are balanced based upon equal weighting of stats (damage, fire rate, range and accuracy).

Edit: removed old locked document and added shared document.  You can also download from dropbox in my later post.

The biggest change I am excited for is the League a.k.a. Arena play because they taking a long-needed cue from Halo 3, and basing ranks on win/loss and not K/D, or individual stats. This is what CSGO, LoL and other truly competitive games do and it keeps the focus on the game and not the player. This is a huge shift in CoD from past games and it was desperately needed IMO because hopefully, bragging about Rank, W/L will take over the obsessions with K/D because K/D is not a measure of skill whatsoever, for a multitude of reasons.

Sure, there are some things they are going to have to iron out e.g. If you drop out mid-match, this = two losses, but the overall concept was long overdue for CoD since it likes to pretend it is a competitive game, but now with the ranking, bans and protects per game... It's finally acting like a real competitive game which is good for both casual and pro-players alike.

i think that competitive is the cancer of CoD and basically what has taken down the playerbase in the past 4 years. maybe that and youtubers... and i dont mean the entertaining ones like mark of j where its just about badassery. the ones who breakdown the game and others who publish the exploits. if competitive was GOOD for CoD it would have increased,  not decreased the playerbase.

i played in the league thing for BO2 and was in the master division or whatever that top one was... nobody was any good playing in the league side. hell, one game we had the entire lot of teammates quit on us and me and one other person STILL beat the whole other team.

it would be nice if CoD got back to the basics, boots on ground combat with just public playlists. leave the competitive to the LAN events and private matches. get rid of the mDLC stuff and ridiculous customization. as a parent, i know they are marketing to children yet its a M rated game, i have to tell my kids "absolutely not!" if they ask for any money aside from just playing the game and map packs.

my older son has already pre-ordered the game. he seems excited about it. my younger doesnt even care about it even though its a zombies version this year [he is damn good at zombies]. i probably wont be bothering with it [first CoD ever i havent bothered pre-ordering or wont buy]... i know i cant wait until 2016 though.

I believe one reason competitive and casual have been so at odds up until this point is they were two different games, essentially. So, a pro player might think X weapon is OP, when a casual gamer lives for X weapon because it's not OP in a public match situation e.g. Ground War, 9v9, and/or it makes the game fun for the casual player. It was a small minority controlling how the vast majority of players play. This will no longer be the case, hopefully?

The map / match bans and protects adds another meta layer to the game... Something CoD has been in desperate need of for a long time and allows the game to be played the way players want... Pro or casual... Which is the main thing and allows a separation, but not at the expense of one player base. This is the real change between pro and casual players this time around...

Completely agree.  I don't "care" about the competitive scene in that I don't really give a crap who wins what tourney.  That said, I'd love to see an influx of about 30 or 40 million more young players all hoping to be the next Optic Captain.  :)

I think the changes for competitive are going to be really good for those interested in competitive, but allowing the pros to use more gear will be great for all of us.

yes, 4v4 is VERY different than even 6v6 [nevermind 9v9] and most people dont play much other than TDM, which isnt even a competitive gamemode. i play a LOT [mostly] of Hardpoint and CTF [or sabo/demo if available], i never play TDM if i can help it. something that might be OP there isnt for another gamemode. Harpoint for example, SMG and shotguns are both very viable weapons and i think preferred for the most part [map dependent]. in CTF the guy on the home flag with an LMG can be such a troll but that loadout certainly isnt a runner, nor is a guy with an AR.

The thing that makes 3arc games seem laggy is their hit marker audio sound, it makes the sound after the hit you see the x then the sound is delayed.

I do not understand why they do this, they have turned it right up this year louder than bops one.

I hope it's a great game but like i've always said I'll settle for good. And I love your excitement about it Dillinger and I'd love to get behind you on it but it seems as of late I can only get behind someone if their drunk and bent over a pool table... ;)

But I digress...I'm just hoping it's a smooth running game and they manage to sort out the latency and matchmaking and I'll be happy.

Hopefully, the 1.03.5 release will be before BO3 beta on Aug 19th.  It would be interesting to see the jitter reduction algorithms in play.

That's a really good point UK fan and maybe that's why Iain has been hammering it so hard,it would be sweet.

Time to switch to PS4 now. LOL

Don't get all these animals riled up again....LOL

I have a whole plan put together for Blops 3.  I live near Seattle, MSFT is practically in my backyard, and the saturation of players for CoD is very, very high here.

My ideal world will be a week off for the demo, a very small Geo FIlter right around my house and the greater Seattle area, with really tight pings so I can post some really great screen shots to aggravate the Vanilla Gorilla with my CoD prowess. :D

One thing I like about my XB1 is games like CoD are not true HD (1080p), but upscaled resolutions just above 720p a lot of times.

Why am I happy about this?

Because it means  the game will NEVER slow down if it is optimized properly. As much as I love the clarity of 1080p on  the PS4, even in AW, it can slow down if there are a lot of effects on screen whereas the XB1 never drops below a solid 60fps even with hundreds of Exo-Zombies on screen, for example.
