If you mean GeoFilter settings then there are some settings here

 

If you mean actual Playstation Network settings then you can leave everything on automatic

So automatic is best for Playstation network PS3/PS4 settings?

 

I read elsewhere that if you manually configure the network settings on the PS4 you assign it an IP address and this was more reliable than leaving everything to automatic?

 

When I check internet setup on PS3 it says NAT type 2 but in game it is open NAT so is there no NAT type 1 ?

Yes I would say automatic, it can eliminate headaches by doing that. NAT type 2 is normal, it simply means that you're behind a router and have an open NAT type
