Setup advice for directing bandwith to gaming devices

Recommended Posts

Hi

Hoping for some advice on an optimal setup please, I've had a read through the docs but can't figure out the best approach.

Basically, all I want is to ensure that if im gaming, the vast majority of bandwidth is directed here, with everything else just getting the bandwidth it needs as required.

Before I'd read the documentation, I had changed the bandwidth allocation to about 90% for gaming, however this made every other device practically unusable - I thought this meant that it would give 90% *when* i was gaming, but it seemed to always have 90% of the bandwidth hogged even if the console was off.

Having read through some docs, Ive now enabled 'Auto-enable' under congestion control.  I have also added the games console under traffic prioritization.

I've reset 'Bandwidth allocation' and everything is 10% - is this still going to have the same effect as before?  For example, will the categories now be limited to 10% regardless in the same way gaming was hogging the bandwidth before? Is there a way of turning bandwidth allocation off?  Congestion control and traffic prioritization sound like they should do the job.

Thank you!

Adam

Hey Adam,

First thing to mention, gaming doesn't actually use much bandwidth, as long as there's 5-10mbps allocated, that will be more than enough.

The reason other devices are unusable may be that you have Share Excess disabled, click the three-line menu in Bandwidth Allocation and re-enable this is disabled.

I'd also suggest setting Congestion Control to about 70% on both sliders. This does however depend on your speeds from the ISP so you may want to experiment a little, 70 is a good starting point though.

Double check after all this that gaming is still feeling good, and that should be good to go for you!

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me.

Share access is enabled in bandwidth allocation.

Could you explain how the 3 settings in QOS work together?  For example, if I allocated 5% (roughly 7mb/sec of my internet speed) to the PS4  in the bandwidth allocation section and I have the PS4 selected in traffic prioritization, will the device be limited to 5% of my bandwidth? If im trying to stream a 4k movie (which uses about 25mb/sec) will it still be limited to the 5% set in bandwidth allocation?

Technically yes and no, the ports required for gaming wouldn’t be limited, downloads would be. With share excess if other devices aren’t using their allocation then the film can get the bandwidth it needs. Generally Congestion Control prevents lag/buffering across everything. In most cases you can leave Bandwidth Allocation default and use Traffic Prioritization for gaming so you get the best connection possible.

Ok thanks

The connection on my devices is very slow at the minute, general activity such as web browsing/youtube etc are taking ages to load, any ideas why this might be?  Apart from what I mentioned above, the only settings I can remember changing are those in geo filter.

I did just start using adblocker today (using the list provided by yourselves) - could this be why?

Just to clarify, gaming has been fine, its everything else thats been really slow!

If you have reset Bandwidth Allocation and enabled share excess again that won't be the cause, what percentage did you set for Congestion Control? Adblocker could potentially impact it, if you take a look at the page has it blocked a lot of queries?

Bandwidth allocation has been reset, i've deselected and reselected share excess.

Congestion control is 70-70 with auto-enable

I've just tried rebooting which has cleared the adblocker data but I believe it was about 15k queries blocked since this morning - however I disabled it before I rebooted and its still running really slow.

I have an ubiquiti amplifi instant connected to the router using 5ghz, its getting 2.3mb/sec - would there be any compatibility issues with this? the connection to the device is strong but the speed is really suffering.

Its not just when connected to the ubiquiti though, for example the TV and usually my smartphone are connected directly to the router and also struggle.  If im streaming on the TV it will constantly downgrade to SD from HD etc.

Any ideas? Thanks

Set Congestion Control to Always and experiment with the percentages, 70% is our recommended starting point but it may not be the best for everyone. That seems quite high but how many were allowed in comparison? What is the model of the modem/router the XR is connected to and do you still have any devices connected to the modem?

It shouldn't cause any issues, it seems slow but it will just depend on the devices connected to the amp and what they're trying to do.
