getelectrocuted
I just got my XR1000, and on both WI-FI networks, I hear a static noise, or slight buzz under load. A simple speed test can stress the router over WI-FI and I can hear the noise. My router is right next to my modem, and on my desk for work. This is the first NetGear product I bought and the first that is making this weird static noise. It is very subtle, but will get annoying over time. If there are multiple streams going off the WI-FI network, the sound becomes unbearable. I ordered a new one, and the same problem has risen again. Is it a manufacturing defect or a software issue? Hey, welcome to the forum! Do you have the router powered by a power extender by any chance? If so could you try plugging direct into a wall outlet and see if that resolves it please? Hello, I have it directly plugged into the wall outlet, but there is a power extender attached to the second outlet below it. Any other suggestions? My modem is right next to the router, and it does not have any wireless frequencies coming from it. This sound is coming from the router itself. I tried taking off MU-MIMO, AX, Implicit BEAMFORMING, but to no avail, the sound is still present.

If you press down on the shell of the router gently where it seems to be making the noise does that stop it?

No, that doesn’t do much, the shell is quite hard too lol… It only happens on WI-FI networks like the two bands. Does not happen on Ethernet no matter how many speed tests… I bought two and both have the same problem.

In Advanced WiFi settings could you put the transmit power down to half then try another WiFi speed test - does that have any impact on the sound? I have changed the transmit power to 50%. The sound is still present. Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately I don't think there's much else we can suggest, have you reached out to NETGEAR about it to see if they have any other ideas? You can contact them at support.netgear.com. Do you mind if I ask it you are below 25 age wise? The reason I’m asking is I’ve seen this across many brands and it’s like a coil buzz but it could be that with age the frequency which is there is not heard by us older members. getelectrocuted
Yes, I am actually 26 lol. Honestly, I'm surprised you guys aren't getting this issues as well. I've bought two and the same problem as occurred. I understand with age your hearing begins to fade, but honestly, if you put your ear up to it, you can hear it. The main issues is, it's on my desk for work, and if someone is streaming, or downloading a video game off of the Wi-Fi network, the buzzing becomes unbearable. Hopefully NetGear can fix this issue, otherwise sooner or later I will end up buying a new router, after spending $300 on this router haha. We'll have a new firmware soon, if it is too distracting you could try all previous firmware versions and see if that makes any difference.
