XR500 Internet Dropping Out

Hi, I've had the XR500 for quite a while now and the thing has been rock solid.  About a couple of weeks ago, the internet has been dropping out at least once a day at various times.  I'm able to connect to the router, and I'm also able to connect to my modem in bridge mode, but no internet connectivity.  Status on the dashboard says "disconnected" under connection status.  Restarting the router always seems to fix it, but I'm wondering if this is a hardware issue or something that can be fixed.  Unfortunately I'm probably outside of the warranty period. 

I'll attach my latest log that I got right when the most recent occurrence happened.  The internet seemed to go out at maybe around 3:30 to 4:00 pm but could have been a little earlier.  I spent some time trouble shooting.  

This time I changed my ethernet cable, no luck, then I turned off my QOS and connectivity resumed shortly after!  Not sure if it was coincidence, or if it has anything to do with it, but this is the first time the internet has come back up without me having to restart the router.

After reading up some, this may be the dhcp lease issue that others have had. It does seem to drop out after 8 hours almost like clock work. Why would this issue pop up only recently, like within the last few weeks? Was there an update recently? Nothing about my network had changed other than I purchased a larger nas drive. I unplugged it last night to rule out out and internet connectivity went out at 7 am (renewed leases at around 11 pm the night before).  

Amy suggestions? I'm getting so frustrated with routers. I've gone through so many devices and even different brands and there is always something wrong. My last was a Linksys wrt32x and it didn't even support smb 2.0.

Sorry to hear you're having this issue Endo. It does sound like the DHCP issue, which is good and bad, good because recently a Netgear dev has confirmed the issue and confirmed a fix will be in one of the next 3.0 builds! So I would recommend you sign up for the beta if you haven't done so already, you may not get an invite straight away but hopefully by the time that build comes out you will have access: http://www.netgearinnovation.com/dumaos-beta/index.html

The bad news is it is hard to find a workaround that works. Please try these suggestions:

In Settings > Internet Setup switch to Static instead of Dynamic. You may need to mirror this on the ISP router side by giving it that static/reserved IP as well.

In Settings > LAN Setup give your devices reserved IP addresses as well.

Hopefully that will bypass the DHCP lease properly.

Thanks for the reply!  I did sign up for the beta not too long ago, but I also JUST downgraded to the .40 firmware so I'm going to see if that works first.  I don't want to try too many fixes at once and not know what exactly fixes it :P.  Everything came back up at around 10 am, so I expect things to go out around 6 pm, so we'll see what happens around that time.  If it STILL goes out, I'll certainly try your suggestions.  Thank you again!

for me 40 and 56 drop connection the same way, static ip do not change anything ,I'm waiting for version 3.0 if it works

So it's been over 8 hours and no drop-out using .40 firmware!  Will give it some more time, but I feel like it would have gone out by now.  For now I'm going to stick to what is working until 3.0 comes out :D. Thanks for all the replies and hopefully this thread will help someone else in the future.

For me I recall it being fine for about 48ish hrs before it started doing the same thing. (could've been a coincidence that no new devices requested a new dhcp lease during that time period I guess. But I don't have anything to lose at this point as i'm trying anything possible now as it's becoming more frequent for me.

Tried the static IP thing. My method was to set it to dynamic to get the leased Ip address and then switch it to static, it seemed like it was working fine until it happened a couple times today.

I think disabling DHCP completely should help and setting reserved IPs for all devices. Not ideal but should stop DHCP renewing. Make sure you sign up for the beta where there will be a fix in one of the next testing builds.

Well it's now the afternoon of the 5th and still hasn't gone out.  I'm approaching the 48 hour mark so we'll see.

From what I've seen in other response the last thing I've tried after my recent drop (30 minutes ago) was to set NAT filtering to open after I've noticed a lot of

in my logs which were timed close to my disconnects. In the meantime let me just point out that I haven't really messed with any settings other than the above. Any other suggestions (outside of the static IPs) are welcome. Lastly my ISP doesn't require login and I've set up for auto dynamic IP address from ISP and auto DNS from ISP as well.

Ok was debating doing that but was worried it would not let your devices connect at all(I assume new devices wouldn’t which is totally understandable if the ones already connected do)I’ll try that. Also signed up for the beta on netgear forums and here havent heard anything yet. Would love to provide feedback regarding this issue.

Well I do think setting static in Internet Setup will help as well as disabling DHCP fully and giving devices reserved IPs, I know it's not ideal but there is a fix on the way.

Yes that's right, you would have to give any new devices you wanted to connect a static IP on the devices themselves to be able to connect.

Tried this last night and to this morning, but didn't seem to work. I think it was due to just turning dhcp server off and not via wan settings. So now, I just turned both off(static ip on and turning dhcp server off) and looked to have ran into the same issue. Going to try it again another time just to be sure. rebooted both routers as well.

Correct turned dhcp on previously to capture the devices and add them and then I turned it off. I rebooted the modem and router and seems to be working so far though. used dhcp to capture the leased external wan ip address and then set that to static and turned dhcp server off via lan settings. That looks to be working so far since rebooting the modem and router after those changes last night. Isn't ideal of course, but i'll sure as hell take this over the sporadic complete drop outs. Curious (if DumaOS 3 doesn't resolve) if a new device tries to connect, will i be able to manually add it that way? Like will the router pick it up via the lan settings like it would if dhcp was on but just won't let it connect since it's obviously off?

That's promising at least! 3.0 will definitely resolve it once the fix makes it into one of the next builds. No I believe it wouldn't even allow the device to connect to it without setting a static IP on the device first. Do keep us updated!

Update so it seems like turning of dhcp via wan and dhcp server via lan helps a lot, haven't gotten any intermittent drop outs since turning both dhcp and dhcp server off, but there still seems to be an issue (maybe coincidence) where when I'm playing a game online like Modern Warfare(haven't played until last night after making those adjustments) and backing out to the main menu the internet coincidentally drops out in a similar manner as well. When checking the log there's a lot of LAN remote access logs (from the ip address of the 2nd XR500 which i'm behind in my room to access the interface) and some upnp requests. Is this a known issue as well?

That's progress! I can't think that backing out to the main menu would cause the internet to cut out, is this repeatable or has it just happened the one time?

If it does happen again could you take a look at the logs in System Information please and see if anything appears there? Also take a look at the Geo-Filter and see if anything was blocked? - It shouldn't knock the internet off completely if there was but it's worth looking into.

I'll turn off dhcp while i'm gaming to see if it happens also with dhcp turned off on the second XR500(the ip address is static though). I recall it still happening though but will try again.

Another issue that's happening to my roommate is that some devices (that I assigned a static ip via the Main XR500) won't connect even though the static ip is reserved via the router side and the static ip is set via the device side. Issue was happening with both his PC and ipad. Once I open dhcp and set to the ipad to automatic and close it connects. It was working before as well. I can say the same for my echo dot(can't assign a static IP for it). Is there any way to modify the lease times of the static IP? It seems like for some devices it's expiring it maybe? Not sure.

I'll turn off dhcp while i'm gaming to see if it happens also with dhcp turned off on the second XR500(the ip address is static though). I recall it still happening though but will try again.

Another issue that's happening to my roommate is that some devices (that I assigned a static ip via the Main XR500) won't connect even though the static ip is reserved via the router side and the static ip is set via the device side. Issue was happening with both his PC and ipad. Once I open dhcp and set to the ipad to automatic and close it connects. It was working before as well. I can say the same for my echo dot(can't assign a static IP for it). Is there any way to modify the lease times of the static IP? It seems like for some devices it's expiring it maybe? Not sure.

DHCP has been a big issue for sometime with the XR500, when 3.0 drops it should solve the issue, I tried static IP which is a pain to set up and actually still does not resolve the the leases issue as its the router requesting DHCP. I just rolled with it in the end but got annoyed and ended up disconnecting the XR500 and it still is.Replaced it with an Asus GT AC 2900 and have never had an issue in the 3 months of owning it and it`s had plenty of firmware upgrades.Hope it gets sorted with 3.0 as would like to use mine again.Good luck

Nothing in the logs there that I can see, did you notice anything blocked on the Geo-Filter? Do let us know regarding disabling DHCP. For the devices, did the IP in both the interface and device settings definitely match? No way to modify the least times unfortunately, I'm not sure why Netgear haven't implemented this.
