Netduma Host Filter no longer works for Destiny 2 since they have changed to using Steam Network Sockets (Steamworks)

Recommended Posts

As of todays update, Destiny 2 has began using Steam Network Sockets and so players are no longer identified by their IP addresses and so it now seems impossible to avoid connecting to players outside of your designated host filter. Even with 0 ping assist, my location set in the middle of the ocean with the minimum distance selected, I still connect to players.

Is there a way to bring back the geofilter functionality in light of this? If player IP addresses are hidden?

Hey, welcome to the forum!

The router still has to make connections to IP addresses so it should still be possible, we'll need to investigate. Could you provide a screenshot of the scenario you described where you're getting players outside your radius please?

I'm unsure what that means, you're saying that I haven't enabled host filtering on my device? Because it is most definitely enabled and I'm using the exact same settings that I previously used and would filter correctly

The only thing that's changed since it worked perfectly was Destiny 2 updating to use Steam Sockets, so it seems obvious that's the reason why

Given that, what would the solution be? I've tried restarting the router multiple times, I've tried it on two different PCs and still it's unable to filter correctly

I've attached another screenshot from just now, this is what showed as I loaded into a match with 7 other players outside of my filter

Also, I repeated the same thing but for Destiny 2 on Playstation 4 and it manages to filter perfectly on the PS4 as Destiny 2 wasn't updated to use the Steam Sockets on console, so it's definitely a PC specific problem and almost definitely the update to use Steam sockets

I'm just going off the first screenshot you provided which shows the 'Enabled' box for the Desktop device (blue to match the icon) is not ticked which means in that instance at least that is why it wasn't filtering. It is quite likely we will need to test the game again due to the update, I'm just trying to get rid of any variables. In the latest screenshot, had you applied all the settings/enabled the devices before the game or the game client (steam) was active? If steam was active in the tray then it may not be blocking correctly. Exit both fully then apply all your settings, if it still occurs then we'll need to test.

Okay I reset the router and computer, applied the settings before opening steam, loaded Destiny up and had the same thing happen, so it really seems like it's down to the changes

Again thanks a lot for the help, it's really frustrating to play without being able to filter out the masses of laggy players in the game

Thanks for trying, I'll pass this on to the team to test it. No worries, totally understand! Meanwhile though I would suggest you sign up for DumaOS and test on that just in case it works there, that is what we would be testing on.

Understandable, apologies if I seemed impatient, timeline is unimportant as long as the functionality can be enabled again at some point

Realistically though, will it even be possible to enable again? The Steam network sockets use relay servers via Valve which hide the player IP addresses completely, is there a way for Netduma to still filter people out by location without knowing the IP address?

No worries! I couldn't say for certain without it being tested, Destiny uses(d) a hybrid system of P2P and dedicated servers, regardless you still need to make a connection to an IP address which then should be filterable.

Any update on when geo filtering will work on Destiny 2 again? Been looking around on the forum and all I can see is that they are now using steam socket and all that, but what about the playstation users? xbox?

Edit: NVM, tested to be working again.

I will ask Alex if he has had any time to test it but I know he has been really busy testing 3.0.

Thank you Fraser! Let us know!

Found this thread after googling about the geofilter not working for me. I recently purchased the Netduma solely to use for Destiny 2 on PC after seeing it listed as "Fully Supported" under the FAQ section of your site (https://netduma.com/support/faqs/which-games-is-the-netduma-compatible-with/)

I live in Denmark and I am connecting to people mostly from America which gives me a very bad connection, which is the sole reason I purchased this router, to eliminate that possibility as I'd much rather queue for longer than play laggy games every time. I would also much rather not return this router if the geofilter will be working again soon.

I understand after reading the thread that fixing functionality for this one specific game isn't a priority, but it's been 2 months since thread creation with no new information available about whether it can or will work again. For current and future purchases of the modem I think a definitive answer, even if the answer is "will not work again" would be ideal

3.0 is obviously the priority and should be, but will we get an answer about this anytime soon realistically?

Hi Nikuuu - welcome to the forum. Are you playing on PC? We are looking into this and will get updated information out asap.

Thanks for the welcome! Yes I am playing on PC. From what I understand the filter still works on console because only the PC version of the game was updated to use steam datagram relays. They have said that console will be updated to use the same technology soon though as it serves as DDOS protection. From my research it seems that CS:GO casual still has a working geo filter? With that being a Valve game it will also use the same steam network sockets and if the filter is working there, then I'm hopeful it can work for Destiny 2 on PC again.

I understand that you guys are looking into this and have other priorities, I suppose I'm just looking for a rough estimate of time before we know if it will function again. I ask this because I already have a very good and expensive router, but I purchased the Netduma to replace it only for the filtering capabilities within Destiny 2 on PC, and without that function any time in the near future I would like to look to return it.

Thanks for your time and reply, stay safe and healthy guys!

That's right, it does work with public CS:GO so that is promising. I'll ask Alex for an estimate but we may not be able to give you an estimate as we're so focused on 3.0 at the moment.
