xr500 dropping internet

Recommended Posts

hello.

my second XR500 is dropping internet connection yet says it is connected and receiving internet. it happened with my first xr500 and now with this one. will this ever get fixed? I am extremely tired of paying $300 for things that dont work properly. my internet didnt drop out from the ISP because as soon as it happened I rebooted the modem not the ONT box and everything went back to normal. this is the second time in less than a week that it happens and I really dont want to do a factory rest for the 20th time. is there a fix for this?

Sorry just to clarify, the internet dropped out, you rebooted the modem and the connection came back on the router? If so did you have internet through the modem at that time? Do all devices disconnect or just wifi/wired? Does it come back ever on its own?

sorry not the modem, I restarted the router. I have frontier and what they have is an ONT box that works like a modem but I didnt restart the ONT box just the router because the ONT box was showing that it had internet and it was not restarting I know this because I was right next to the router when it happened.

All devices lost connection to the internet wifi and my PC which is wired. the internet light on the router was white, and when I looked at the box for internet status in the xr500 that gives you connection type ip address and connection status it said connected.

Thanks for clarifying, so the router sustains a connection and the devices disconnect. In the log in Sys info do you see any DHCP lease entries around the time the issue happened? If so could you set static/reserved IPs for the devices and see if they disconnect again? How often do you lose connection?

[Internet connected] IP address: this is what was showing up, but I also get a lot of these and it happens every 15 minutes

I have an static ip for my switch lite and the first time it happened it disconnected it. it seems it happens with all devices wired or wireless.

this has happened with the first xr500 when I had spectrum and ill say maybe 5-6 times since update .40 and with this new one 3 times with spectrum and frontier. reason why I didnt say anything about with spectrum was because I was having issues with spectrum and my line was really unstable, but with frontier my line is suuuper stable ping fluctuates between 8-10ish ms and I dont have packet loss unlike spectrum that I used have a daily 1-5% packet loss.

Are you on .40 now or are you on .56? Could you post the log here please (minus your IP if public) and I can take a look, see if there is any indications as to why it is happening. What is your exact setup now e.g. modem > XR? Seems unlikely that both the routers would have been faulty but perhaps some incompatibility with your setup.

I dont use a modem the router is connected straight into the ONT box (optical network terminal)

I am currently on the .56

Do you need to use VLAN, PPPoE or DHCP 60/61 when connecting straight to the ONT? Could be DHCP then, if you've given static IPs to the devices then disable the DHCP server after that and see if it continues please. When you come back onto .56 do a reset as well.

as far as I know I dont use vlan nor PPPoE the gateway IP address is almost the same as my IP so I guess I use DHCP

can I download .56 after factory reset?

An ONT typically wouldn't use DHCP as it's like a modem, if you don't use those connection methods then that is good. Yes absolutely but it's recommended to do a reset after an upgrade.

ok yea I was trying to see if I can see anything saying DHCP but couldn't find it. well I went back to .32 (only update I had save on my pc) did a factory reset and after setting up that it asked me for the update and sent me to the main page to start configuring I did another factory reset. I just set everything up I will let you know tomorrow around this time if it happens again.

This looks like your problem,of which a few people are getting the same including myself , there seems to be no fix though I have not tried downgrading the firmware so hopefully that will work for you

Keep us posted and if it's not resolved we can try other alternatives.

just did it again..

the internet didnt come back on the router and stayed offline even tho the internet light was white and connection status said connected, so to make sure it wasn't the router I disconnected the ethernet from my pc to the router and ran straight into the ONT box and this is how I am writing this. here is log at 9:30 is when it went off

Thanks for the log, so it is likely a DHCP lease issue. Could you give all your devices static/reserved IP addresses please if possible and then disable the DHCP server entirely and see if that resolves? Keep in mind if you want to add any more devices while this is disabled then you'll need to give them static IPs as well otherwise they won't be able to connect.

That will be in LAN Setup, untick "Use Router as DHCP Server" and then apply.

yea.... no. I did all of that 20 for 20 equipment, unticked it and I had no internet and I couldn't even log back in the router unless I did a factory reset. So now the xr500 sits in my trash can I am really sorry but I cant do this anymore ive done more factory resets with this router than Ive had to with the 4.

thank you for trying to help it seems I am not the only one with this issue. netgear better get it together.

Did you give the device you were on the same IP that it already had or a different one? If a different one then you would need to release the IP on the device manually in order to get the new one. It will work once it's done correctly, if you don't want to continue then I would suggest you hold on to it so you can install DumaOS 3.0 when it is available.
