XR500 WiFi disconnect issues

Recommended Posts

About half a week ago I received the XR500 and immediately updated to the newest firmware 2.3.2.56. Ever since I received it, I've had nothing but problems getting all my 26ish WiFi devices to connect. Only about a third to a half connect on most reboots. After much troubleshooting, calling both Netgear and AT&T (my ISP) support, I found out that firmware version 2.2.1.10 works just fine. Any idea why the new firmware is causing these issues? I don't want to keep this router if I'm going to have to stay on the old firmware for the life of the router.

Other things I tried:
I've done many factory resets and setting up both my modem and router different every time. One thing that seemed to help sometimes was toggling the QoS on and off or vice versa. Besides playing with some settings, regular reboots don't help at all.

Ive had this router for a couple of weeks now and have had zero problems...I did the .56 firmware update yesterday afternoon and kept getting booted offline like every 5 minutes nonstop. I couldnt even get into a game of blackout. I resorted back to the .40 firmware and never got booted. I'm not sure why its acting up.

Alex,

As for me..yes . I've not had a boot offline in the weeks ive had my xr500... Once i did the .56 update it's like every 5 to 8 mins i get "lan not connected" and then I'm booted...it comes right back on... But in about about 5 to 8 it does it again.... Once i downgraded back to .40 firmware i haven't got kicked once.

I've only tried the last major firmware, not the .40 revision. I'll try that later today and let you know. If it's just that revision that's causing the problems, I have a lot more faith that it will get fixed than if it was a major patch that messed it up. How well do the devs usually respond to user feedback like this? I've never used any DumaOS products before.

I suggested Axel disable Smart Connect on the Netgear community, the response was:

I tried that and it didn't help. One of the easiest ways for me to tell if it's not working is when only 7/10 of my 2.4GHz-only light switches can connect so it doesn't seem like it's 5GHz related since they don't even support 5GHz. I tried more firmware versions and was able to get 2.3.2.32 working just fine but not .40 or above.

Edit: I have dual band devices like phones having problems too, it's not limited to 2.4GHz

What message do you get on the devices that don't work when trying to connect to WiFi? Is it always the same devices that don't connect or does it change depending on which devices are connected first?

The devices change but they will usually either say they can't connect (not much more than that) or they will connect to WiFi with no internet.

When the router's having a problem, these are usually the symptoms
- 7/10 of my 2.4GHz-only light switches can get internet
- Galaxy S10 can connect but no internet
- Alexa can't connect but Google Home can

When a device can't connect, it will show up on the device map but under "offline" so it at least attempted.

I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me. I really like the router and the interface, I just hope I can get it to work while staying up to date.

I'm assuming all these devices are set to connect automatically? Have you changed the DHCP pool at all? If so there may not be enough addresses available to hand out? If you give some of the known devices that are having issues static IPs on the router does that help?

I'll try testing with giving them a static IP within the next couple days. Right now I'm sticking with the stable version .32.

As for HT160, MU-MIMO, smart connect, manual/auto channel, and which channel for each band on the latest firmware, I had the same issues regardless of the combination of these settings.

Yes I can confirm this is a major issue.  Wifi and Hardwired issues with the latest .56 version.  I tried playing a few COD Black Ops 4 and I keep getting connection interrupted in every match.  So it looks like every 5-10 minutes the internet is dropping out.  After the upgrade I even did a factory reset to see if it would resolve the issues.  The factory reset did not help at all.

Wifi - Google Pixel 3XL . -I am logged in to Skype for Business for work and it keeps letting me know everytime it drops in and out

XBOX ONE X - Hardwired - Dropping in and out from the internet during Black Ops 4 MP matches

How do I downgrade to an older version if I need to?

Do you see any entries in the System Information log around the time these drops occur? If so could you post them here please. Does it happen if you disable QoS fully from the Anti-Bufferbloat menu?

To downgrade just download a previous version from the support site and downgrade by doing the same thing you would do if manually upgrading. I.e. uploading the file to the router via Settings > Administration > Firmware Update.

I just went to the netgear community through the router (online support) and found the .40 downgrade and put it back....ever since I went back to the .40 I haven't been booted playing COD online and that was yesterday afternoon when I went back.

I have disabled IPv6 and seems to have maybe resolved my WiFi and Network dropouts.

Looks like DumaOS does a verify for internet and IP every 7.5 minutes.

I have monitored the last 4 internet/IP verification on the logs as well WiFi on my phone and Hardwired on my XBOX ONE X

Ok, so I did a lot more testing today and am very confused by the results. From my tests, .40 and .56 acted about the same and didn't matter what I did with my AT&T modem. I use my 10 light switches as an easy test since they are constantly supposed to be connected so these results show how many on average were connected.

Static IPs and IPv4: most - all
Static IPs and IPv6: most
DHCP and IPv4: hardly any - some
DHCP and IPv6: hardly any - some

QoS didn't seem to have a consistent affect when I turned it on and off under the anti-bufferbloat menu. My Galaxy S10 specifically said "Failed to obtain IP address" when using DHCP. I have logs from when it was having problems on IPv6 if that helps, just let me know if I should post them.

When I was running .32, everything worked with DHCP and IPv6.

Are you using PPPoE or VLAN at all? I'd disable IPv6 as well as I think there are some issues with how it works with QoS. You haven't made any changes to content filtering in settings have you? Also have you been using Hybrid VPN? Even if you haven't I would double check and make sure enable and block internet when disconnected is disabled as well.
