OpenWRT on the XR500

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm wondering if it is possible for me to build OpenWRT for this awesome router. I know that I would lose the benefits of using DumaOS, such as the Geo Filter and other optimizations. I do have the source from Netgear's GPL site and am currently compiling according to those instructions. I just want to check and see if it will work before I flash.

It is not advisable. The XR500 runs 2 firmwares, the propritery netgear firmware with dumaOS running alongside it. Flash at your own risk as it is not the same as flashing other routers such as the r7000 or a linksys wrt3200acm as examples.

DumaOS is built on top of OpenWRT so yes, you are able to do it (if you do it correctly!)

Obviously if you flash it with OpenWRT you’ll have breached your warranty so keep that in mind.

I’d recommend using a different router as there will be no easy way to get DumaOS back on there. It’s up to you though!

i was gonna suggest using an openwrt compatible router then connect that to the XR500's DMZ that way he gets to use both without violating his warranty but presumed he would already know this if he's familiar with openwrt.

I decided against it last night. While I am sure if I put time and effort in it I could get it to work, I really don't want to. Thanks for the input.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for letting us know what you decided to do - if you need any assistance don't hesitate to ask :)
