Have a 20 ms ping to games and Im still getting bad hit detection.

Recommended Posts

I have a 20-30 ms ping to a lot of my games I connect to in AW, and my bullets still aren't registering properly, there is a lot of delay. I compared my gameplay to that of offline gameplay, and the difference was insane. The bullets register sooo much more smoothly offline. Is there anyway to reduce ping even more, or is there anything else I can to do get better hit detection in games like AW, Ghosts, or BF4? What else is important to pay attention to, other than raw ping stats? (And no I have no input lag!)

Thanks!

It's the game, seriously I connect to the dedicated servers with 12 Ms of ping and can still suffer, sometimes I'm a war Lord next game it plays like its my first ever MP game.

Some of the previous cods play great.

Im glad to hear im not the only one!! I agree some games seem to play a bit better than others... Do you know of anything that effects your hit detection/ latency besides ping? Do I need a super fast upload speed? Do I need certain settings? Is my first mile ping just too big? just curious about your personal opinion. thanks

your ping is fine and is easily fast enough, you only need around 300-500k upload which is tiny on most connections these days.

If your bandwidth is been taken up others using your connection that can have an negative affect on your game but can be controlled with the R1 using congestion control.

Do as zennon has requested above and I am sure we can help you out a bit better once we see the results of that.

Thank you guys for looking into this.

Im still getting bad hit detection. I cant wait to be able to set specific bandwidth to my console. Sim on youtube said that there is a way to fix lag comp. I may be suffering from that lag comp. Who knows.

Okay so you're averaging around 20 there so getting 20-30 in game is great! I would suggest playing around with the Geo-filter and try excluding the hosts your experiencing this on, see if you can get into some other ones that may perform better.

Ok. Thanks. So there isn't anything else I can try to improve on except ping? Im wired into the router, nat open, fast speeds, low local congestion, good hosts, and great ping.

Maybe I need to bridge my net duma into my router, or maybe my isp sucks?

I had the same problem as you Zombitroid.

I just turned off Ping Assist by setting it to 0ms and Strict Mode ticked.

then increased my geo-filter to include most of the USA but exclude the West Coast because the Seattle dedis were killing me.

If you get lobby-booting, check that there aren't any padlocks. If there are just include those in your geo-filter.

I had to include the West Coast after getting lobby-booted most of the time.

Now I never get booted.

I set my Congestion Control To 100down and 100up with Share Excess ticked.

This allows me to be the Host most of the time.

I would say that 85% of the games I'm in have good hit detection

and 99% of the games I'm host are great.

CoDAW is just garbage.

Good luck finding a setting that works for you.

FQs19, I thank you for your advice, I will certainly take it into account. I never thought of turning the ping assist off and increasing my geo filter to cover the entire border of the U.S.

Fixing lag in online games is one of the hardest things to do.. We all share our opinions, and we find that everybody's solution to lag is different, thats just how it is. One guy's fix to lag is to simply plug in an ethernet cord, another guy's solution to lag is turning on dmz mode for his console.... Unfortuneately, not everybody can benifit from such an easy lag fix/solution. Lag, to say the least is a tough nut to crack, and I believe that spending many hours of experimenting is the only key to fixing your network connection for good, so that you can have a fair shot in online shooters.

Hi Zombitroid,

Lag is quite subjective as you say but in general the forumla for latency is this:

(base ping) + (distance delay) + (local queuing)

The last two terms can be minimised using the Geo-Filter & Congestion Control respectively. The base ping is up to your ISP. Please post your Internet Diagnosis result and we can see if its a base ping issue :)

Hey guys! Thanks for all the replies! And Iain that is a cool little equation you have there!! I have been experimenting and I have found that my hit detection and overall gaming experience in Advanced Warfare is best when I have the congestion control sliders up to 100%, I tried all sorts of other numbers, but 100 seems to be the setting for me. No lag issues for the past 3 1/2 days... My kdr is spiking, and I am a happy camper!!

I hope that my connection stays like this forever!

Ok, out of pure curiosity I just adjusted my sliders from 100 down to 70, and I honestly didn't notice much of a difference at all. If anything the hit detection was slightly worse, just slightly, and they were killing me slightly faster compared to when my sliders were at 100. Unless someone convinces me to do otherwise, I'm going to keep my sliders at 100 and hope for the best! If something works don't fix it!!!!

My Download speeds from speedtest.net are 16 Mbps, and my Upload speeds are .59 Mbps. And in my netduma's congestion control I have my ps4 prioritized, does this make it so that my ps4 packets are sent before my other device's packets? Just curious, because I'm not sure of how exactly this stuff works.

It means that your PS4 will get to use more bandwidth if it needs it. I think the QoS algorithms send gaming traffic first anyway but I'm not sure. The advantage of setting it to 70/70 is that others on your network can't cause local congestion - if they do you'll lag.

Your ps4 will have more upload bandwidth prioritisation on your home network that does not mean your packets travel faster your ping see's to that.

I upped my upload from 70% to 90% last night and the game played pretty smooth even when the wine induced lag started to kick in.

I have 28 down and 5.5 up just wife on laptop me on pc and ps4 and a couple of mobile phones running on network

Do you guys find that game quality/ hit detection varies depending on the day? Yesterday my games were great and I was destroying people and today my games are a bit rougher. It could easily be possible that I just found harder players today. I'm having a really hard time.

Also do I need to make a completely different thread because Im kind of off topic.
