Please can a Netduma Expert Recommend the right set up?

Recommended Posts

I mainly want the best gaming experience on my Xbox One possible.

My Download speed is 43mbps

My Upload speed is 9 mbps

My ping according to speedtest.net is 28.

Due to annoying circumstances I have my xbox one connected wirelessly to a wifi extender/boost/access point. Running a speed test when using the boost still shows the same results.

Every match I currently go into has both lag spikes and often button lag. My aim is to cut out the lag spikes.

It is strange because I ran a Ping Diagnostics through the Netduma and the results came back good? Ideally I don't want to run another pingplotter test because they're boring and slow and I think it's just the way I have set up my R1 that is causing me issues.

All help is very welcomed! :)

Best setup= Not wireless.

There's nothing I can do about it. I have to use Wireless sadly. I used wireless before and it was absolutely fine so I don't get why I am having issues now?

'Before' meaning a different game?

Wireless doesn't provide a reliably smooth gaming experience, you may not have noticed the spikes on other games but they were still there.

If there is no way to run an ethernet cable to your xbox then the next best option you have is to buy some 'home plugs', the network runs on the electrical wiring in your house. They work pretty well and are cheap.

You plug one in near the router and run an ethernet from the router to the plug.

And you plug another one in near your xbox/ps4 and run a cable to that from the plug.

There's always SOMETHING you can do about it lol

Like Colonic said get some powerline adapters, it's better than wireless. Or better yet, a really long ethernet cable. Gaming on wireless with a Netduma is like having a Ferrari with no gas.

I have them, but when I try running an ethernet cable from the home plugs, it doesn't work on my xbox as in I get the connection.

When I said 'before' I mean that I have just moved into a much larger house with a much more complicated internet set up. I used wireless from a home plug before and it was perfect yet doing it in my new house despite the plug being next to my Xbox isn't working too well it seems?

If you don't get a connection from the home-plugs using ethernet cables then you either have a faulty part (home-plug, ethernet cable, electrical socket) or you're doing something wrong with them. That's what they're for so they should work, if they don't (and you're sure that you're using them properly) then replace them.

If you're at a new house and you have a different setup then it could be all sorts of things causing problems, it could be your isp, equipment, setup, settings, pretty much anything. You'd need to detail your entire setup and your Netduma settings if you want us to trouble-shoot. You'll also need to test your ISP's line using Ping Plotter so that we can rule that out as a problem.

But there's no point in doing any of that until you get your home-plugs working first, wifi gaming is likely the cause of the lag-spikes and anything we advise will be like trying to cure the headache of a decapitated person.

I'm sorry but it's literally too complicated to explain as I had some technicians put my set up together.

It may not be necessary for us to troubleshoot the setup anyway. Just get those home-plugs / power-line adaptors (or a long ethernet) working and you may well find that everything works beautifully.

Keep us updated.

I didn't read through the responses but here are my thoughts.. as long as there is a point of connection that is other than your netduma you will get lag spikes because hooman beings will connect to it.

However if you make the duma the only wifi spot in the house you can regulate connection going through. After doing that use congestion control to give your console connection the priority.

This could be the issue too, we're not sure if everything is going through the Netduma or not at this point.

If the wireless access points and switches all go through the Duma then it shouldn't be a problem anyway, Anti-Flood + Hyperlane will do their jobs. But if the other devices are 'getting around' the Duma's congestion control then there will definitely be problems.

But either way, playing Xbox on wifi is painful - I've tried it (for testing purposes). I kept getting booted out of games and the lag was ridiculous.

wifi has tons of variables.  as stated above it will not play nice.  your new home may have interference that your old home didn't.  Neighbors, microwave, 2.4Ghz phone band, ceiling fans, fans in general, construction method, solar flares, magnetic influence, flux capacitor.... those last few were jokes. if you ahd technicians set it all up they should be more than capable of making you an ethernet cable for the console in ten minutes or I'd hire new.  If they need to run a length of wire inside walls etc maybe an hr. otherwise with your current setup you will still be pissing in the wind fighting those 'variables'  GIGO garbage in garbage out.  If you start of with the weakest gaming set up how do you think those packets feel when they finally hit the server and turn around to come back?  Poor packets...

Just as everyone has said above WIFI is a crapshoot and a sure way to get zero consistency in your gaming and that is what we're all shooting for.

There has to be a way to connect via a cable or plugs  or something as anything is better than WIFI.

run a Power to Ethernet adapter...you'll lower your ping by ~5-15ms...

connect to the same wifi your xbox is on then run `ping [router ip]` this is how much extra latency you are getting on the wifi alone.  on wired it will be <1ms
