Pre Purchase queestion/ set up advice

Recommended Posts

I am looking to purchase the R1router however I need to make sure this will actually work in my issues with both gaming and streaming.

My current set up is a Ps4 in a house with two children and and wife. My wife enjoys watching Youtube and Netflix and my kids mainly watch Netflix.

My download speed is 7mbps(max) and .5mbps upload (max).

Currently whenever my wife watches a Youtube video/Netflix (even on low settings) my game (black ops 3) will immediately shoot to over 400 ping and become unplayable.

My Ps4 is hardwired from my modem as well as my wifes computer. Other than those two devices everything else is wireless.

With the R1 will I be able to play online MP games like Black ops 3 while my wife and kids both watch Netflix and Youtube without disrupting their quality?

Your speeds are quite low but the R1 can prioritise your gaming packets etc and the congestion control will help with the other issues.

The main point I would make is that Black Ops 3 is FUBAR and not even the R1 can help on that score.

It will enable you to choose local servers which will give you a lower ping to host and give you the best possible connection/chance of a decent game.

Might be worth hanging about till somebody with a similar speed to yours can confirm any of this.

That is EXACTLY what the R1 is meant to do. It won't make your ping spike to 999+ because someone else is sucking up all the net.

HOWEVER, keep in mind this won't make Black Ops 3 better than it is when it's working as normal. People often buy this router thinking that it's going to make them a god player and unstoppable. The purpose of this router is to make it so that local congestion (congestion due to other people in your house uploading/downloading) is not effecting your gameplay and it does just that. Also allows you to make sure you only play on low ping or local servers which help reduce lag.

With that said, many people find out once they get the router that their ISP also sucks and is causing them to have massive ping spikes and packet loss.

Yes, the congestion control or QoS system on the R1 or any other router will help with multiple users on such a low internet speed...

Gaming does have a requirement of like 700KB/s but that's nothing really, so just make sure that you leave 700KB/s Down * number of Xboxes reserved via congestion control in the R1.

Your ping might still jump a little when under heavy load due to a bug with EEE on a lot of cable modems

I simply used Black Ops 3 as an example as I am most often playing this game whilst noticing the issue of ping spikes. It also happens with Rocket League, Neverwinter, and many other online games. My main concern is that I buy the router and it doesnt work and then I am out 200$+

A valid concern, all I can do is answer any questions you ask.

Like others have said those are pretty low speeds and you know how it's effecting your gaming now, there are no guarantees that any device will work in any given situation. But if it were me and with the features the duma has it was designed to help people in your situation by letting you set a given amount of bandwidth to certain devices and keep local network congestion to a minimum by using the Congestion Control and Device Prioritization features.

Yes your speeds are not ideal but gaming doesn't need a ton of bandwidth but like Slipknot said Netflix sure uses a ton along with any streaming. So your basically putting your gaming  packets first by utilizing the duma features and Hyper-Traffic,instead of your gaming packets being the last in line.

So with the Duma it will allow me to say " My Ps4 gets priority and gets all the bandwidth first, then the other devices" or is it not exactly like that?

So at the end of the day I need to know, If I buy the Duma and it does not work as intended the terms of service say the return terms are for only 14 days for full refund but does the 14 days include travel time on the return?

It will work lol but don't expect it to plug in and magically fix it... It does take some tinkering to get the right settings for your setup... In fact, why don't you tell us what modem/router you have right now

Someone else on here has the same modem. You want to put it into bridge mode by changing it in the settings and then you'd plug your netduma into it. Giving you an open NAT and letting the netduma do its thing. I would say you'll be okay to purchase, it would benefit you BUT keep in mind it takes some tinkering to setup. We can help you here on the forum once it's setup.

The terms on our website state that we would need to receive it back at our HQ before the 14 days are up

Okay so it would be impossible for me to return it in 14 days, due to the location I live. Unfortunate.

Well it's not gonna make you the next MLG star, but it will help your gaming experience as from your original post it sounds like your having issues due to your network being compromised due to your speeds and a lot of usage from streaming and other usage.

The Netduma can and will help with these situations as that's what it's made for.

Where is it that you live? If you email [email protected] I'm sure they would be willing to come to an agreement if you live somewhere that would cause shipping to be slower than on average
