Kirby9099
Good afternoon People, I have a couple of questions for people on here. I love the idea of the Netduma, but yet cant afford it probably at all this year. I was burned by the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 which is essentially a pile of junk. I want a Netduma really bad and was wondering about a potentially different way of getting it. Since it uses a Microtek Routerboard, can i just not purchase this: https://www.amazon.com/Mikrotik-RB951G-2HND-5-Port-Gigabit-Wireless/dp/B00EQWUZM6 and throw the Netduma firmware onto it? Any help would be great! Thanks.
Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted June 9, 2016 Netduma Staff Share Posted June 9, 2016 Netduma don't provide the software separately - you have to get the router with it pre-flashed. Even if they did allow it, it probs wouldn't be much cheaper because you'd have to pay for a software licence.
abc123
you are paying for the software license when you buy the netduma, other companies have tried to steal the firmware and attempted to resell it. Lawsuits have ensued, I highly recommend not going after microtek and just saving your money and enjoying it. The WiFi on the netduma isn't ideal though by any means and if that is your primary use is WiFi you'll need an access point which could also be your netgear nighthawk. Finally just install DD-WRT on the nighthawk it will be better immediately

Sell the nighthawk on craigslist or ebay and buy the duma... You could probably get 150 for it

Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 11, 2016 Administrators Share Posted June 11, 2016 Hey, welcome to the forum! As above we're not able to sell the software on it's own. One reason for this is because it would risk bricking the router if you tried to put it on yourself.
Trueseeker
Too bad we couldn't send you a better router that we purchase to upload the firmware to for same price as sales. Benefits both experiments, cause we can work on having great connections on a simple router, but what if it doesn't work in future if Netduma wants to transfer router brands or better the software. Can you imagine fast software with great firmware to experiment on? Maybe future idea for the Netduma. I mean we buy routers but upload better firmware already like DD-WRT for free. So Netduma can do is charge for the firmware for same sales price but no conflicting issues with ASUS or Netgear because we bought their router from the store. Anyways, idea maybe looking into. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 13, 2016 Administrators Share Posted June 13, 2016 It's something we know people do want. That being said it would require a lot of time to get the firmware working on different hardware. Right now we're focusing on the next big upgrade. Maybe in future, we'll keep it in mind for sure
abc123
Definitely would be awesome to be able to upload this firmware on other hardware, i'd love if it was ported to pfSense...also if we paid for the software license I feel it would be fine. how the license works would definitely be up to you guys but i think it would expand the market. You could still sell "fully" supported hardware like the great people at pfSense do.

abc123
We'll definitely keep that feedback in mind abc! Thanks Fraser, I am aware of the nightmare that firmware development is. Here are the negatives with going FULL OS: Hardware compatibility Iain will have to code the drivers for all the boards ethernet cards, and their wifi cards. To get around most of this work Netduma is built upon OpenWRT (a very smart choice). This means that support would have to know the difference between a firmware issue and a hardware issue (OpenWRT vs Netduma). The GUI on OpenWRT can be redone to your liking and works across all Hardware so i can't imagine that being an issue. Monetizing This is a company and although we all want to see rainbows and sing kumbaya, this is the real world...even sadder this product is mostly sought after by Gamers. I wish that the majority of gamers donated to awesome developed tools or even paid for them when a license is required...but in the real world 90% of these products are stolen or just used without regard to the work required to create them. So this is the big one for me...how do you make a software that someone can hack easily to bypass licensing, monetized. My solution? Simply make your cloud validate licenses VIA SSL handshake. Then you don't have to worry about it, only store the IP lookup table and the cloud settings on the router encrypted or not at all so that they cannot be easily grabbed and shared to any would-be hackers. Just some ideas, keep on keeping on
