Now if it is different to your current MTU value just enter the value it gave you, Change it in your console and router.

Here is some information on what MTU does and how it can affect your internet performance :

So if mine says 1472 do I enter 1472? Or do I need to add 28 for the header, so a total of 1500?

If you fragment at 1473,then 1472 plus the 28 header is 1500.So that's what I would set it at or just save yourself the headache at leave it on auto, which is 1500 anyway on PS4.I leave mine on auto and it works fine but your milage may vary.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have read that the MTU should be set the same across the board, meaning the router setting under WAN and LAN and the devices connected should be the same.

I have also read that the correct MTU setting should be based on the ISP, I have comcast and they say the correct value is 1500.

If i had a playstation 4 I would set my playstation to 1500 along with the router.

But I have an xbox and even with my router set to 1500, on the xbox network test I never see a MTU greater than 1480 which leads me to believe the xbox has the MTU set to 1480 which cannot be changed.

This leads me to believe that it may be beneficial to set the router LAN and WAN to 1480.

Any network savvy people have any input on this?

In the past i have messed with my MTU with poor results, but i thought setting the router to 1480 might be worth a try so that the router and xbox have the same setting.

so far it seems to have made a positive difference but i haven't played enough with the netduma to know for sure.

Does any one else want to try this and post their result?

This was an answer directly from Xbox support:

'You can choose 1500 MTU or as long as it meets the minimum

requirements (1384 MTU or above), you can play games on xbox live perfectly.'

Clear as mud right? And I asked why does the Xbox only shows 1480 and never 1500 and they never gave a clear answer on it as well.

Basically they are saying make sure it is above 1384 which is the bear minimum and below that you will not be able to connect to Xbox Live.

people that think minor settings in a router don't matter then let me change some stuff for you.  You will still have open NAT but it will be the worst connection ever and the xbox multiplayer test will still say "it's all good".
