Does anybody else get consistent 40 ms ping and still lag?

Recommended Posts

I once heard Netduma Iain say :

"Hi Zombitroid,

Lag is quite subjective as you say but in general the forumla for latency is this:

(base ping) + (distance delay) + (local queuing)

The last two terms can be minimised using the Geo-Filter & Congestion Control respectively. The base ping is up to your ISP. Please post your Internet Diagnosis result and we can see if its a base ping issue :)"

Im running a theory that maybe when the netduma says 40 ms, its really (40ms)+ (base ping) (+local queing).

I have determined that there is no way that there is only 4% of a seconds worth of latency on my end... becuase it feels so much more significat than that at times... I mean once in a while when I get a 20 ms flat game the game plays decently... but 40... feels probably what a 3 bar feels like for most of you... But is there anybody else who can relate to this?

I don't think there is a definitive answer to the issue. Different developers and different games deal with connections and data in different ways. Throw into that people throttling connections and poor matchmaking sbmm people from many miles away joining the lobby etc etc and you get the issues that we all bought the R1 to try and eliminate.

The R1 does exactly what it claims for me but there are still a fair few factors that we cannot control.

On a personal note the R1 has made a positive difference to my gaming but I still get those WTF moments

With the geo filter off I have been thrown into games with a host in Mexico ( I'm in the uk) to which I was getting 800+ ping.

I'll leave my filter on thanks and take those occasional wtf moments.

Happy hunting :)

Yup. It's exactly the way how bagsta69 describes it.

The R1 is great. But it can't solve an issue that it doesn't control.

I can remember that I saw a video of the famous YouTuber Drif0r and he said

that there is a base delay in AW. Means: The perceived latency can vary a lot from the ping values. Because the whole world you see isn't in realtime.

Sometimes a host can have 40ms but it may have a bit of packet loss which would affect the feel of the game, unfortunately we can't prevent that as its on their end. You'll get some hosts like that from time to time but persevere and try to find a different host

I see the issues that zombitroid described where I get 40 ms ping to host but the game still plays like absolute crap. However, as others have noted, I get more playable games with R1 geo filtering enabled than without. The results are truly a mixed bag.

Way to many variables to figure out what makes a good gaming session and what makes a bad gaming session, host location, host connection, players connected to said host, congestion on host's network etc...

The duma is great at doing exactly what it claims to do...it gets you the best possible host's according to your location and GF settings. And helps control your network congestion allowing your gaming packets to flow thru smooth instead of being put at the end of the line behind Netflix, youtube etc.

And I've had those 25 ms lobby's and it played horrible and get a 60 plus lobby and it's duma smooth,so when some one figures it out let me know.

thats true, im "guessing" its some sort of updated information not getting to the netduma, which it relies on, fast enough. ive been rebooting to flush the cache. a "flush cache button" is in the queue for the next update.

next time you have a low ping and have a terrible game do a trace on the host and where the trace leads to.  For me, I keep getting into a low ping lobby but have a terrible game.  When I trace, the trace goes all the way to the west coast USA and I am in UK.

I wouldn't put a lot of value in the trace route,it's more of a fun feature.Lot's of the dedi's which are 80 actual miles from me trace all the way to the UK,no shit.

With COD AW it has been hit or miss since day 1.. What I do know is that I have gotten more hit games then miss since buying the Netduma.. I usually find anything 60ms or below seems to play well...Most games... some dedi's play better than others even with similar pings..

I played AW for the first time since about a week after it came out. It was just unplayable for me. The connection was terrible all the time. The few games I did play, it was a whole lot better than I remember. Hit detection was spot on, no lag at all. So the R1 is doing it's job which is great!

It's another story for BO2!

I am the same way except flipped!!!! I am on the west coast and often times my tracers go to the east US or more often the UK!!

Yea for me its almost as if there is one set day out of each month where the game will put me in god mode. the rest of the days it doesnt matter what the ping is, everybody else sees, shoots, and kills 3x faster than I can even if im putting my heart and soul into the game (which is hard to do when you know that whatever you do will not help becuase you know that you are at a disadvantage due to your stupid internet connection)

This is the video Drift0r was mentioning.

At 1:07, he shows that CoDAW's split screen has 83 ms of lag.

At 1:33, he shows that LAN averages over 100 ms of lag.

The Netduma can't fix a broken game.

It is most likely Bufferbloat.

Yesterday I had a 120ms ping connected to a host something like 2200 miles away and I wrecked the other team. How's that?

you are being lag compensated, in effect you are ahead of the other team by a few miliseconds, so u see them before they see you, that is how everybody wants gaming to be.

I remember a while back now gamers with 3rd party so called gaming routers talking about power cycling their routers every so often just to give them a refresh! I have to say I have wondered if this would be a good idea for the netduma as I recently changed only my geo filter size and location for cod AW. Waited 2mins had strict and 0 pa but was still showing me host outside my geof. A quick reboot and all was fine again :)

I play mostly tdm on cod AW and even in good games there is always at least one guy who seems slightly ahead of me. Sometimes you even get lobbies where almost the whole other team are ahead, and everyone on my side has more deaths than kills.

That said, I know when I'm hosting the game plays absolutely amazing. Kind of like what I wish it was like all the time lol

don't u just hate laggy games, its just ruins ur whole day lol. When games are like that I camp my ass off. If you want a laugh try this:

(1) camp in a hidden spot

(2) Kill somebody while camping - they will come back looking for revenge.

(3) Change position and put a claymore in your last camp spot

(4) wait for the click noise and lol all the way to the bank

ITS MY CONNECTION.. every single time.... its soooo annoying. yes some days are better than others, but most of the time lag is the problem... thats just how it is at my house.....

and the sad thing is I cant change my line or my provider because century link is the only provider that can cover me...
