Help optimising my home network?

Recommended Posts

ok so here's how i have my modem/router/netduma set up. i have a 20 mbps up/20 mbps down fibre connection by the way.

downstairs bedroom wall --> modem/router (wifi turned off) --> asus ac68u router (wifi on) --> prolink powerline adaptor (downstairs bedroom) --> prolink powerline adaptor (mancave upstairs) --> netduma --> wired connection to PS4.

this setup does work but i can only seem to get anywhere from 3 - 8 mbps download speed when i do a speedtest on my PS4.

when i remove the netduma and have my PS4 connected directly to the powerline adaptor, i can usually get close to 20 mbps on the speedtest. (this is without the netduma connected)

is there anyway i can somehow optimize my setup with the netduma connected AND get a higher download speed on the PS4?

would this setup be better?

downstairs bedroom wall --> modem/router (wifi turned off) --> netduma (wifi off) --> asus ac68u router (wifi on) --> prolink powerline adaptor (downstairs bedroom) --> prolink powerline adaptor (mancave upstairs) --> wired connection to PS4.

OR could i do with just:

downstairs bedroom wall --> modem/router (wifi turned off) --> netduma (wifi on) --> prolink powerline adaptor (downstairs bedroom) --> prolink powerline adaptor (mancave upstairs) --> wired connection to PS4.

does the PS4 need to be directly connected to the netduma? or would the netduma software features still work through the powerline adaptors?

any help would be appreciated!

Hello there.

I would go with the second option beacuse to will youse the most of you routers feature. Just remember to put the second rothe that you gona use in Ac mode( access point) You should be getting those speeds. Could you before change the setup try this guide.

Hi Psykotik, welcome to the forum :)

I would go for the second option as well. When doing the speeds tests, make sure you press reset distribution in congestion control and the sliders are at 100%. Also make sure that you've entered the correct bandwidth amount. Try doing the test through a wired PC and see what speeds you get through that.

The Netduma software will still work through the power line adapters :)

thanks for the tips. especially about putting the asus router in AP mode. never thought to do that!

here's how i have it now:

wall --> modem/router (wifi off) --> netduma (wifi off) -- asus ac68u (AP mode, wifi on) --> PA --> PA --> wired PS4

i'm still getting low download speeds through the wired PA connection this way though. i'm beginning to suspect it might be the powerline adaptors acting up (or my home electrical network at fault). still getting around 3 down 3 up on the PS4 connection test.

but when i connect the PS4 to the asus wifi, i get the full 20+/- download speed from the connection test..! it's really weird.

i have the congestion controls at 100% in all tests. ipv6 disabled.

i think i might just go with a wifi connection as i'm getting better speeds that i would through the powerline adaptors strangely enough.

doing a speedtest from my PC (wired connection to the asus router) also gets me the full 20 down 20 up.

Hey, Psykotik that is a much better set up now!

A couple of points, console speed tests are not very accurate usually so I wouldn't worry about it.

I would advise against using wifi for the console - bandwidth has nothing to do with gaming, getting your full speeds on wifi won't improve your experience. Wired is more reliable and 3 up is absolutely plenty for gaming, so I would still advise playing wired.

If you were downloading a new game or something then you could do it via wifi then, if in fact your wired speeds are that low and its not just an inaccurate test

did some testing with a laptop wired to the PA. inconsistent results each time. one time i got around 1mbps down, another time i got around 10mbps down.

something is up with either the adaptors or the powerlines through my home.

nevertheless, everything else works fine with the new setup and its a huge improvement to what i was working with before. will see if i can somehow get the powerline adaptors sorted to give me higher download speeds on the PS4.

also, i think i may have convinced at least two of my friends into maybe getting a netduma router for themselves haha. great piece of kit.

Great news.... You optimized you local network and pin pointed the issue. Form there is a pretty straight forward journey. Lest hope that is the PLA not the electric installation.
