Not seeing a big difference in Wifi strength

Hi

overall im happy with the R3, just wanna make a comment on the WIFI. i live in a normal detached house the wifi signal is still poor, for example my phone constantly disconects from the wifi when i walk upstairs. I have a TV upstairs also using the WIFI and it sometimes takes alot longer to connect, and i sometimes experiance buffering. for referance i have 900mb Down 100 UP speeds.

:)

Try this:

  1. Split the bands, give 2.4/5GHz different names and apply - you'll want to connect to 5GHz specifically for speeds
  2. Use a WiFi analyzer to find the least congested channel and change to that
  3. Experiment with the widths to see what gives better results
  4. Ensure it's in an elevated position - not on a metal surface
  5. Ensure there aren't any electrical / wireless devices e.g headphones etc within close proximity ~3 feet if possible
  6. Set the antennae to this position _ | | _

On that note … the Wi-Fi sucks on the router ! Poor to fair , pretty much in every room except the main room it has router in . Hope theirs updates soon for this ?!

Hi, I’m going to ask a strange request. Take the antennas off and see if it remains the same. You can use on a mobile device an app called WiFi Sweetspots which is free.
First test it with app with antennas attached then remove them and test again.

Have you followed the steps above to see if you notice any improvements - any specifics on what "sucks" about it?

I can confirm these suggestions work. Yeah you will not get excellent on every connection but I haven't had any issues since changing to these suggestions from full auto.  FYI

Still no luck with Wi-Fi !  I’ve tried everything, the best way to use the Wi-Fi is to have 2.4 and  5 together, but still no dice

Oh and the white lights are on for Wi-Fi but don’t flash ! Not sure if they do or not

Where is your router situated?

do you have any other kind of electrical equipment near it?

Did you test to insure there is no leakage and that the antennas are acting as normal. It’s why I asked to remove them and test to insure the radiation pattern is working as designed. If the signal remains the same without you have an issue that would indicate hardware.

Could you expand on the actual issue you're having with WiFi, is it range/speed, both? Could you provide some figures so we can get a better idea?

Ok …. So when I split 2.4/ 5 the Wi-Fi is worse . I’ve tried just 2.4 with different channels, different names etc. the only ok I get is if I run 2.4/5 together. But the range doesn’t change . I’ve moved the router around multiple locations in room . So again , the range is suffering no matter what I do. I followed your suggestion to the T . I’ve also noticed that the Wi-Fi lights don’t flash when running speed test etc. is it normal for the lights not to be flashing when running Wi-Fi as a indicator  to know it been used ?

Okay, what are the speeds you pay for and what are you getting over WiFi next to the router and what are you getting in the room next to it etc. They won't necessarily flash

Please tell me that you’re adding more settings to the Wi-Fi ? Like beamforming , and  mimo to this router? I’ve spent to much time trying to get this shit Wi-Fi up and running . I should just hook it up and pick the best channels for 2.4 and 5 . And be done . It should work out of the box and does not work . What your plan on fixing the Wi-Fi ? If this is it for the future  of Wi-Fi  … then I would like a refund. P.s this is not my first time setting up a router , this by far the worse experience setting up Wi-Fi  and doesn’t even work

Yep , I’m seeing loads of devices on fair and a few on poor , thinks it’s hardware also I have noticed a rattle from one antenna

Could you do me a favour and test it without the antenna is attached and see if the results are the same. It’s an odd request but is helpful.

@Newfie On a similar note, do you know if its ok to use other antennae on the R3? Say a set of XR1000s to see if it helps the signal at all?  I dont know if theyre universal or not.

They would need to be Wi-Fi 6 antenna I believe, I’m wondering about getting some bigger ones but not sure if available

When you change to a higher gain the pattern changes and you end up with a more directional pattern. That might not be the answer to your issues as coverage might not be perfect. It could be a number of reasons why coverage is effected from transmit power to hardware.

You might be better off with an AP that offers better coverage and more streams which will help with WiFi but I’m not sure how well Duma acts with an AP, not this version anyway.

if you have a spare router that offers AP mode it’s worth a try. The R3 is a 2x2 on both so it’s a single 2x2 client on each channel. Most middle end APs offer 4x4 and you might be able to find the odd one with 8x8 but that might have to be something like the RAX120 ran in AP mode.

What about if you try with none on

Defeats the purpose , this routers Wi-Fi is not very good ,plain and simple ,it’s ok if you live in a shed

It’s to test to see if there’s an issue. If it remains the same or with very little difference it points to an issue which might be a fault on your router

It’s not an issue as others devices are fair and plenty excellent,it’s the range ,coming from a Asus Gt ax6000 ,there’s a bit of difference ,my daughters gaming AX Wi-Fi laptop is upstairs and has a poor signal , all the Alexa’s upstairs are fair

It is a 2x2 and drivers to hardware make a difference as does any port issues or  whether they have amps fitted to them or not, which Asus  and Netgear tend to have which are seen on reviews from say Tim at Smallnetbuilder on his strip downs. Better hardware, official drivers.

The Asus you have is a 4x4 and 4x4 so good hardware. Just better hardware and drivers which is why you pay a fair bit more.
