Community opinion: the difference between 20 and 60ms.

Recommended Posts

I don't know about you, but I sure can notice the difference between 20 ms and 70 ms. Please post your opinion below. I'm curious to see how you guys react to a 60 ms+ ping to a game. When I have a 20 ms ping its perfect, but as soon as it goes beyond 60 it gets super noticeable, and I don't know how this is possible. I would think that 6% of a second round trip time is good, but I seem to notice it, quite a bit! What is up with me?

Also a secondary question for someone smarter than me: Does a ping above 50 or 60 ms make your ping bars in game go down to 3? Or does it take a ping of 100 or more to make the ping bars go from 4 to 3? Thanks!

I remember playing mw and mw2 where you could see the ping to the game it was trying to connect you to. 75ms seemed to be the border for most players at that time.

On AW I play normally off a ping of around 20 ms but this does not mean I get perfect game although last night I was on fire.

I really think there is something else at work here as I join a friend on a regular basis in the USA (I am in UK) and he pings 100-120 to the host in my lobby or I join him with my R1 turned off and whilst I can detect a difference it is very small.

Maybe when you join games over 60 ms several other people in the same lobby are joining with pings in excess of 100 and this is causing you issues.

None of the above is written in stone or even scientific but just my experience of playing cod online for a few years. :)

Ping bars go from 4 to 3 when you hit 100ms... The interesting thing is on MW2 (and probably other games) when you are host you ping about 30ms which is odd. It should be 0 ping to yourself.

90% of my games I ping ~20ms to the dedicated server and it's fine for me. Whenever I connect to the servers that are higher I immediately noticed the difference without even looking at the map.

For me the lower the better and i can feel the added 50ms also , when you have played twitch shooters for so long any difference is noticable.

For me it is the visual hit marker is on time but the hit marker audible is behind.

The ping bars change to three bars at over 100ms yes.

I don't even check what the Ping is. I set my Duma up for distance, ping, sliders etc and just join whatever lobby it throws me into.

I find it varies so much, even during the game it changes when people leave/join etc

Last night for instance I joined a game 0-12 down, in about 2 mins and finished 27-15, stayed in the same lobby next game got slaughtered, everyone was negative, the top player was me with 18-24 the top player on the other team was 54-8

So glad I have no hair, as I would have pulled it all out by now

hmm... well that is weird... when I play AW if my ping is just above 60 my ping bars in game go to 3... it must just be me... those ping bars in game aren't to be relied on anyway when you have a net duma!!

Ah maybe it has changed for AW I am going from how it always has been before SH games got their hands on the franchise.

In AW I have 3 bars with 60 - 80+ms ping to the host, so I don't know what is meant by 3bars starting at 100ms (unless it accounts for other players in the Peer Ping?).  I have 4 bars when it says I have 40ms ping to host.  When you are three bars it makes it feel as if players are often ahead of the curve -- as in you shoot first with the Insanity but somehow they are able to kill you with an AK-12 up close.  It just doesn't add up.  Once in a while when I'm in a 40ms ping lobby I will absolutely dominate as if I'm ahead of the curve.

I'm getting a new ISP installed tomorrow.  I hope I get to experience some of these low 20ms ping lobbies, and I'd be happy with even consistent 40ms ping lobbies.  The last few days have been rough with 80ms pings.

I wouldn't know as I've never been in 20 ms lobby's but plenty of 60's and that still doesn't play bad depending on who's connected to the dedi

I totally agree with you. I don't think that the ping bars drop to 3 after 100 ms, but instead after 60-80 ms.

Maybe when my net duma says 60ms its really not 60 ms. Because my game traffic has to go through my net duma as well as my isp hub right? That could be the issue.

It could be the SHG servers. But I just had a theory that it might be because my game traffic has to go through my net duma and my isp hub. And before my net duma I had lag problems, so I wouldn't be surprised if my isp hub was causing a little extra lag just because it exists on my network!
