VenoMmmR1
I'm going to try and not get insanely upset while typing this but I have no idea what is happening. I have read all documentation regarding slower speeds and maximizing gameplay connections. I have altered those settings as described in that documentation including disabling IvP6, reactive bandwidth, and disabling 'Deep Packet Processing.' But other things are going on. When running a speed test on speedtest.net my recommended server appears to be coming from Newcastle, DE when I live in Washington State resulting in stupid high pings and BS download/upload speeds as well. I pay for 150 down/20 upload and I get absolutely nowhere near that. I had a Comcast technician out at my house the morning. He showed me that I'm connected to all 16 downstream channels and all 4 upstream channels and told me that the signal strength is excellent. He had me disconnect the router and run a direct connection from my PC to my modem and I got the exact speeds in which I pay for, but in doing that now my recommended server is in Florida (again I live in Washington state). After several resets he said there was pretty much nothing he could do because he can't troubleshoot equipment that isn't Comcast provided. Once plugging the router back in my speeds ran about 110 down/20 up which is fine as the Wiki documentation says that the speeds should be 'around' what you pay for. I ran a Ping Diagnostic test from the router software and I had 'Exceptional' ping, 'Good' Jitter, 'Good' Spikes, and no packet loss. But shortly after he left my speeds came crashing down again. I run another speed test from speedtest.net and my recommended server is now coming from Kansas. I had a 544 ping and less than 1 download and less than 1 upload. I'm so fucking frustrated at this point that I just don't know what to do. I tried running another Ping Diagnostic test and now I have 'Terrible' Ping, 'Terrible' Jitter, 'Terrible' Spikes' and 13 packet loss. I'm a competitive COD player and an aspiring livestreamer. It is VERY IMPORTANT that somehow this gets fixed and I have tried everything I know how as I had to pretty much self teach myself about general networking setups, terms, etc. Please for the love of God someone help. I guess my biggest question of all is why in the hell is my recommended server coming from Delaware, Florida, and now Kansas? Again extremely frustrated. Below I have posted my most recent Speedtest results and Ping Diagnostics from the router interface.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 14, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 14, 2015 Hey Veno, for a start have you had a look at this wiki post http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=why_do_i_have_insanely_high_pingsthere are a few things there that can be done. We'll need to see the details of the diagnostic for sure. Double check your devices aren't connected to the VPN and what happens if you choose a speedtest server thats in Washington state or closer by? Are you using WiFi or ethernet on the R1 when doing these tests?
zombitroid
try a factory reset on your normal router, and if that doesnt do it maybe there is something wrong with your net duma settings. Try and reset that too, if you must. Keep us updated! Good Luck!
VenoMmmR1
Yes I have read all of the required documentation is regards to how to fix this problem. I'm actually on the phone at this current second with my ISP and for some reason when she was trying to reset my modem from their end I wasn't receving the reset signal. Once I finally was able to get it my speeds seem to have gone back up, but I want to make sure it stays that way. All my devices on my network are hardwired outside of a couple of cell phones and 2 tablets. I'm going to factory reset my modem settings and see if that makes a difference because the Netduma interface is telling me that I'm using an old VPN configuration so let me wipe those settings out and see what the results are
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 14, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 14, 2015 Okay great, sounds like theres some progress, let us know what happens
VenoMmmR1
After factory resetting my modem I ran more speed tests and my speeds are about where they should be but on speedtest.net it is still constantly trying to ping me to a server in Kansas when I live in the Seattle/Washington area. When I manually select the Seattle tower I ping at just over 10, 120 down, and 20 up which is awesome. But if it automatically pings me to that Kansas server then my ping increases and my speeds drop to about 100 down, but upload remains. Going to factory reset the router and see if I can get better results. For now it's 1000% better than what it was this morning.
VenoMmmR1
I have continued to run speed tests in an effort to make sure my connection has been fixed/optimized. I also was able to figure out how to alter my server to my Seattle area on speedtest.net at all times. Thanks for all the help from everyone. For now everything seems to be fixed. Administrators Netduma Iain Posted June 15, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 15, 2015 Hi Veno, Few things, don't worry about where speedtest thinks you are. That really doesn't make a difference to your connection at all. Just pick a server near you and use that as a test. Also remember the ping to the host is far more important then the ping to speedtest. In fact the speedtest ping is nearly irrelevant. Do you know how to use the ping feature on the router? So you can see in game ping. From what I understand after a while the bandwidth would go down and the ping would go up? If that's the case can you tell me what modem model you are using? VenoMmmR1
I have continued to deal with this issue even after the technician has gone and left my house after everything "appears" to have been fixed. I'm having to constantly reset everything in order to get speeds back only for this to continue happening http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4438368917Iain I've spoken to you on Twitter about this several times. And nothing has appeared to fix my connection. I have another technician coming out to my house tomorrow. I have Comcast Extreme 150/20 package and the highest I've gotten since installing this router is 120/20. But again I have no idea what is happening that is causing this. I've followed all instructions during installation including specified settings. I'm using the Arris Surfboard SB6183.
PharmDawgg
There is a limit on the Netduma right now. It will only give you a maximum of 120Mbps even if you are subscribed to a higher bandwidth plan. An upgrade that will be released in the near future will take this up to 900Mbps.
VenoMmmR1
I'm aware of the current limit. I'm just unsure as to why the download/upload speeds are fluctuating all over the place and my ping shoots way up. All of a sudden the interface tells me that my ping, jitter, spikes are all 'Terrible' and I'm dropping packets. It's like it happens completely at random, and then it stays that way until I reset it. Like I said I have apparently their "best" technician coming out to my house tomorrow to attempt to stabilize the signal. But every time they come out they just reset it and leave. They also say they can't troubleshoot my equipment because it's not Comcast provided. I don't believe it's on my end or my equipment. I believe it to be 100% on them. Just wondering if anyone knew anything happening like this.
PharmDawgg
Oh yeah I just remembered there is an issue with the Surfboard modems for Arris/Motorola. I can not remember the actual title for it but search the forums. The is some sort of bug where the ping will spike and the only way to resolve it is to reboot the modem. Recommended fix from the previous forum was an firmware update but only Comcast can do that and who knows when that will happen. Let me know what you find out. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 17, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 17, 2015 Buck is correct, here is that thread http://forum.netduma.com/topic/1611-buffering-and-latency/it is the exact modem you are using as well, if you read that thread and either show/tell the technician that comes out tomorrow then hopefully he will be able to help. Maybe providing you with another modem would be the easiest solution.
VenoMmmR1
I will show the technician the forum post. Sucks that no solution is out there. I've never had this issue before when I was using my SB6183/Nighthawk combination. Ping always remained steady and download speeds ran at the 150/20 that I pay for. It wasn't until after following the installation of the Netduma that this started happening.
VenoMmmR1
I have now spoken to Arris Live Chat support and this is what he had to say and I have the same question...why does this problem not occur if my SB6183 is directly connected into my PC?Matthew C: The connection problem is very likely in the router if the problem does not exist when your computer is connected directly. The modem only acts as a translator in effect, changing the cable signal to an Ethernet one. The router, on the other hand, is responsible for a lot of things including splitting that one connection to multiple devices, honoring any firewall settings, and fulfilling any other features it is designed to offer.Matthew C: I recommend contacting the router manufacturer directly and mention to them the problem does not occur when you are directly connected from your computer to the modem. Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted June 17, 2015 Netduma Staff Share Posted June 17, 2015 If I recall correctly it is something to do with the way the Netduma send packets and how the modem handles them. It was definitely a bug with the modem though as one of the technician's trouble shooter the problem and found a problem. I think he forwarded it onto the manufactures but they have to test it lots before they can release it
VenoMmmR1
So is the only/temporary solution to just not use the Netduma or vice versa and not use the SB6183? Really disappointed that this modem has been out for several months and this has yet to be addressed...
Alex49H
I have Cox as my ISP and they just sent me another modem instead. I have the same SB6183 but I am not using it because it would suddenly start buffering and the ping would shoot up high.
Special_Ed
I have the same modem with cox. I don't know that I start getting high pings or buffering but I DO restart the modem every couple of days. If you log into the modem at 192.168.100.1 and look through at the first screen and the event screen, you'll see accumulated errors. So I just reboot it as I said. PharmDawgg
Would a SB6141 have the same issues? For some reason I thought it was built with a different chipset.
VenoMmmR1
I can't speak to the SB6141 having the same issues or not. I walked into Best Buy and said give me the best modem on the market. They handed me the SB6183. I just had the technician leave my house and this time he was a CT4 from Comcast so it was a step up from what I was getting. Unfortunately, the end result was me just caving and disconnecting and taking my SB6183 offline as the previous thread you linked Buck basically said there was no solution until Comcast approves whatever firmware update that is necessary. It was replaced by Comcast's newest modem/router combination, the XB3. Went in and enabled Bridge Mode to kill the WiFi coming from the their combination so it was solely coming from the Netduma. Realtered the proper Netduma settings and it brought the system back online. At least currently. Just going to leave that in there in case it happens again. I have a feeling this was just a result of two newer products on the market and not having the necessary equipment to communicate with each other properly. Thanks for all the help to everyone. For now we have a working network.
