Bufferbloat issues on R1

Quick background..

 

I currently have 200MB fiber directly into the home. I let the R1 automatically configure for my speeds. Turbo is checked, reactive algorithm, and sliders at 70%, geo filter set, Xbox in hyper lane, and Xbox prioritized, and was still having issues on COD WW2 lag.. just barely seeing enemy’s and dropping, no hit markers, bullet sponges, you get the picture.

 

I decided to do a network congestion test. Changed all the priority from my Xbox to my laptop. I then streamed 2 4K videos and two HD videos and ran bufferbloat tests using the R1, it rated my quality as a C and no higher than a B rating on Bufferbloat. I ran no lower than 10 tests all said I had low quality internet and bufferbloat issues. I removed some congestion with the same results.

 

I went to Best Buy and purchased the Linksys WRT32X gaming router, I placed the R1 behind that. Put the R1 in a DMZ, and placed the R1 with the highest priority on the QOS settings. I hardwired my laptop and console into the R1 for Geo filter only.

I defaulted the R1 which reset all the QOS sliders. So it was basically only doing Geofilter services for me. I ran the same testing and my bufferbloat and Quality was A+ across the board, I ran at least 15 tests with an abnormal amount of congestion and little to no congestion through the R1 to the Linksys killer router, all A+ ratings

 

 

Conclusion, the R1 QOS algorithm is not very good at all comparatively.

Unless someone has some suggestions on this?

Were you using the ISP provided router before you bought the Linksys?

Its commonly known not to use the ISP's equipment and that *may* have been the problem.

No ISP equipment, just their demarcation point where the fiber lands. I had nothing between my R1 and the internet..

 

Now I have Linksys WRT32X> R1>Xbox

 

Everything on my network other than my console connects to the Linksys, it has a more stable ping

You probably had your PC in hyperlane while testing, which is only meant for low bandwidth traffic such as gaming... Take your PC out of hyperlane, reset the distribution and make sure share excess is checked

 

Then recheck your bufferbloat.

 

I can get A+ at 70% most of the time but that site is also unreliable because if your computer can't handle running it then it will show ping spikes that aren't actually there. The best way to test is using pingplotter or command prompt ping while downloading/uploading and watch the ping yourself. For me, the same settings will always give a different result on that site.

Something was setup wrong then

I highly doubt it... qos settings on R1 suck

I already told you sir that my sliders were at 70% and I wasn’t using hyperlane.

 

Maybe my unit is defective? I never had bufferbloat on my previous R1. It’s nit my first Duma

Hi Bdotson - something must not be setup correctly (or less likely, but possible, there is a hardware defect), as A+ should be there across the board.

 

Could you take a screenshot of your Congestion Control page and post here.

There’s also a buzzing sound from my router

 

They often emit a hum - is it very loud? Could you post your Congestion Control page please so we can check settings?

You have the Preemptive algorithm selected in your screenshot, does switching to Reactive solve your issue?

Thanks - could you try reactive as PollutionBlues suggested. What results does DSL Reports give you?

 

Could you also try lowering to 20% on both Anti-Flood sliders (extreme, I know, but just for troubleshooting) and run DSL Reports again. Thanks

I have tried reactive before with same results, I will try the sliders at 80%

 

Try at 20% please. Not 80%. It's possible that your ISP is underproviding, which means Anti-flood is not able to take effect.

I had the sliders at 80% and got an A rating, mind you that was with little to no congestion. The other day I was doing 4K streams, etc. 

 

My results are slightly better with the Linksys.. Could it be that the R1 is not cable of 4K streaming.. I have three 4K TVs, and we do a lot of household streaming.. Perhaps the Netgear XR500 by Netduma is better suited fo rme?

My DSL report is in my signature.. With the DUMA its an A rating..

 

I think the issue is that the Netduma can't handle the multiple high resolution streams. 

 

The Linksys has a 1.8 Ghz dual core processor.. 

 

When I had the R1 back in the day, it dominated lag but I wasn't doing near the activity I am now.. I have 3 times the devices, and usually a couple of the kids are watching streams with the wife. 

 

I placed an order for the XR500 through Best Buy.. I am going to return the Linksys.. My R1 I just bought is only a month old, and unfortunately I am out of the return period. I will try to recoup some funds on Ebay I guess? :(

Are the TVs and most of your devices connected wirelessly? If so, this could be a wireless issue. The fact you are getting a great DSL reports result shows this. No congestion on the network at time shouldn’t be relevant - DSL reports  artificially creates congestion when it runs its test. 

 

The XR500 is a beast of a router. It has very powerful WiFi and as it has our DumaOS it has the best QoS, along with many other features.

I usually don’t use the Netduma wireless for lack of 5g

 

When I did these tests it was hardwired, as well as two of the TVs

Ok, thanks for the update. This could be a hardware limitation as it sounds like the software is setup fine given you are getting As on DSL Reports.
