BOOMRAD
Hey there, I am looking for some advice and help. I am currently experiencing issues with my connection when I am streaming something as well as playing. Everything is set up correctly with speeds and 70% up and download. But when i'm streaming the the ping to host is spiking from 22ms to 850ms and back. This suggests to me that the router isnt functioning as it should. Do I need to use hyper traffic to make this work properly? I have tried adding hyper traffic and it doesnt seem to help. Can anyone advise? Zepsblackdog
Are you streaming NETFLIX via 2.4G wireless or are you hardlined?

PharmDawgg
Netflix, along with other HD sources of video streaming such as Youtube, are HUGE bandwidth hogs. Basically whatever you have available, it will use. So when you are trying to do both streaming HD and playing a game, you are going to be pushing more data through your connection. The higher the demand, the more latency there will be as services and devices fight for access to the available traffic. This increases your ping. There are a few things you can do to help this. First, have a good quality router which I think the R1 is. Second, run wired instead of wireless. Wireless connections always suffer from less quality, higher interference and possible packet loss, which overall will really increase your latency and ping rates. Wired connections have far less contention for bandwidth or other interferences, plus greater throughput except in extremely rare configurations. So basically I would place your PS4 in the hypertraffic. Next I would change to Preemptive. Next I would set congestion control to 70/70 and keep lowering it until you feel no lag or see no ping spikes. I find that 15/15 works for me. This allows not devices on my network to cause ping spikes while I am gaming. Once I am done gaming I then go back to reactive and leave my console in hypertraffic. And I reset my sliders to 90/90 which is great for my networks bufferbloat.
Zepsblackdog
^this. I was going to mention that I had a similar issue, and moving the router to more of a "line of sight" wireless distance, dramatically helped buffering a ping spikes. That is IF you are unable (like me) or unwilling I should say, to run a wire to the device.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted May 3, 2017 Administrators Share Posted May 3, 2017 You've got some good advice so far. My initial thoughts are what are your speeds and do you have EVERYTHING connected to the R1? If not and you have some devices connected to the ISP hub then congestion control will not work correctly. ColonicBoom
One of my housemates is a prolific youtube watcher, and was still managing to cause some small spikes. I turned 'share excess' off an gave them 3mb to play with. This eliminated any spikes they were causing. Anti-flood had it mostly under control but this completely did away with the little spikes that were left over.

I will be running 1000mb up and down in about two weeks so II guess that will help, but I dont think there should really be a bandwidth problem at all. Everything is going through the R1 but I will also try turning share excess off and see how that goes. Any further advice would be appreciated. BOOMRAD
Also the ps4 is wired and the Fire stick for streaming is about 3ft from the router. I dont think this is an issue The user interface is also very slow from time to time. I think I have the Duma working well when i dont have anyone else on the internet but currently I am not getting it to work as it should.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted May 4, 2017 Administrators Share Posted May 4, 2017 Are you using hyper traffic for any highly bandwidth intensive devices? If so that could be the cause, it's only meant for low latency traffic.
BOOMRAD
The only device on hyper traffic is the ps4. It is the only device I care about. I genuinely feel hyper traffic isnt working at all here.

I genuinely feel hyper traffic isnt working at all here. Hyper traffic puts your gaming traffic ahead of the queue so prevents jitter/spikes, if it's doing its job you won't notice it. Your issue is coming from elsewhere. Post in the 1 on 1 section: http://forum.netduma.com/forum/66-request-1-on-1/and I will have a look next week.
