Question for the cable modem I have

Recommended Posts

I recently switched to Cable internet sense the base/home ping is 11-18ms 100 Down 10 Up which is reasonable for the devices in the home, for netflix, and youtube, but my real question is I have a Arris SURFboard SB6121 basic modem with no U.I, should I have a router like my netgear R7000 connected to the modem? and the Netduma in DMZ on the R7000? sense I don't have a DMZ option on the modem, and I don't know if it has a firewall that would block the DUMA... let me know some suggestions and i'll change, but I still wanna have the option to control the devices on the r7000 in Access point mode on the Netduma..

The recommended setup is modem > netduma, the duma has a firewall so no issues there.

Also if you did the setup you suggested you wouldn't be able to make use of all the R1's features unless every device was still connected to it. In which case putting a router between the modem and duma is very unnecessary.

Here is the modem page http://192.168.100.1

Not much you can do with it but you can look around.

Keep the modem to netduma then if you still want the AP then have it connected from the netduma to it.

thanks for the comment I have had this cable modem for years after i switched to fiber, but the base ping was 50ms, so I switched back to cable, why I was saying if I should have the netgear behind the netduma because I thought the Netduma always needs to be in a dmz, to work properly and the Arris surfboard doesn't have that option, for it being a basic cable modem with no user interface, like a DMZ option, but I guess oh well sense you guys say it should work properly in the placement of the routers I have now (Arris Modem > Netduma > Netgear in AP mode)

thanks for the comment Fraser that is my current configuration of the routers I'll just keep it that way so I can control the Wifi Devices on the netgear with my netduma, sense I have like 13 devices total in the house, just wasn't sure if the netduma always had to be in a DMZ on a modem or router, sense the cable modem doesn't have that option with a user interface to have a DMZ option, if the Arris Surfboard has a firewall or not, so the netduma can pass the Modem for up and down traffic out into the web, for gaming or whatever.

The modem won't have a DMZ option, that's only if you have another router between the modem and the Netduma (or if you have a modem/router combo that the Netduma connects to).

[ Modem > Netduma > AP ] is exactly how I have mine set up, I've got no DMZ in there either.

My set up is as stated above modem > duma > netgear in AP mode best of both worlds,I get to use all the features of the duma and get the faster speeds for the rest of the house from the 5g from the netgear in AP mode.

Modem or DMZ is absolutely fine. Modem > Netduma is the ideal setup so that's great!
