How to Improve my VPN Experience

When I go to VPN enabled devices and select my Xbox One my NAT type goes from open to moderate and also under detailed network statistics: Pre-enabling: Download Speed: 50, Upload Speed: 10, Packet Loss: 0% MTU:1480 Post-enabling: Download Speed 5.43, Upload Speed 2.8, Packet Loss 1%, MTU 1378.

Currently I am with Ipvanish.

Anyway to better my experience.  I have even selected a VPN closest to my home location to better the DL/UL speeds and latency. Do I need to do something under exceptions? Do I need to just keep trying different server locations? Thanks ahead for any help you can provide.

It could be that particular server, try some others and if they are the same it could be the service. Adding exceptions for the xbox would make it not protected by the VPN so there would be no reason to enable VPN in the first place if you see what I mean. What are you wanting to get out of the VPN? I would always recommend not playing through a VPN if possible.

The reason that you could be getting a moderate NAT type could be the VPN has the ports closed.

Thanks Fraser/Crossy.  I am kinda a VPN noob.  For some reason I thought it would be a better experience playing through a VPN.  I kept trying different servers and some were not located in the areas that they said they were.  For instance a couple of the Atlanta locations were actually placing me in Arizona.

The only aspect that I was able to improve by changing servers was getting 0% packet loss and that's it.  For some reason the MTU stayed at 1378 and the NAT stayed moderate.  Thanks for the info.  I won't be gaming anytime soon through a VPN.

All gaming through the VPN is going to do is increase your ping :) Only advantage would stop people being able to pull your real IP from in game.

Just to add to the convo nearly all VPN providers will have a closed NAT because they have multiple clients ergo its impossible for them to forward incoming packets as there is multiple choices.

In nearly all but freak circumstances a VPN will add latency and maybe even significant latency. Unfortunately for console gaming you can't use exception lists.
