Should I be using the Geo-filter for IW?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, newbie here.

Got a netduma on the way, mainly so i can control the congestion in my house, but also because i thought it would be great to use the Geo-filter and connect to low ping lobbies.

However, after having a flick through the forum tonight, i've seen plenty of posts saying that they get more stable games with the geo-filter off. Not sure why this would be?

Other people saying that they get better results connecting to servers 1000's of miles away from then, rather than a dedi 400km away?

Again, i'm new to this and no wizkid, but i just wondered if i should use the Geo-filter when i set it up at all? Or, am i better off disabling and just using the congestion management features?

Any help/advice welcome  :)

Hi there and welcome.

The Netduma's primary benefit will be as you described, which is to control the traffic affecting your gaming at your residence.

The Geo Filter, for me, has been a God send for two applications specifically, so I will lay them out accordingly for you to best decide on your own.

1. Primary - P2P game hosting.  When games like CoD move from the temporary dedicated server environment, like AW >> BO3 >> and eventually IW will do, you can control WHERE you get placed in a host's game.  When I first got my NetDuma I was playing a lot of BO2, which was all P2P.  I was connecting to hosts hundreds and hundreds of miles away, sometimes in Mexico when I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US.  That is not ideal for gaming and the Geo Filter fixed that immediately.

2. Secondary - Which Dedi I play.  When BO3 dropped, the Seattle area dedicated server on XB1 was already known to have suspect hit detection issues and voids filled with missing bullets.  There have been several threads about it, so this can be researched on your own if you are curious, but that isn't the focus here.  The local dedicated server the game wanted to match me with (Seattle) wasn't playing well, so without the Duma, I would be stuck connecting to only that location.  Which, in effect, trapped me to playing the game on inferior equipment.

  • With the Geo Filter, I was able to "force" connection to dedicated boxes in Texas and more the "middle" of the US like Kansas/Chicago.  This gave me a better overall gaming experience even though the ping was slightly higher, because the box was more stable.
  • With the Geo Filter, you can also game with other players and "Remote camp" the dedicated box that is in their area if they like to complain about the ping and blame that for their deaths...LOL

Can you get good games on IW without the Geo Filter?  I would say you probably can, I mean there are plenty of videos out there showing good games with YT lobbies by people who aren't running a Duma.  The question is how often and would you know either way without it?

  • With the software you can see the individual dedicated server address and you can temporarily block that host if you just want to make sure you don't play 'THAT MAP' or against 'THAT GUY' again (more than likely, it's not magic and all players have to drop in somewhere).

Personally I am not playing IW or CoD this cycle, so I would wait for the true #DumaArmy Slayers to report in, but in my mind there is ZERO reason not to have it at your disposal.

YMMV,

JD

Just gonna second what has been posted above, if your not using the GF your missing out on one of the best and most used features of the duma.

The ability to choose what location you play your games in is a HUGE factor in your gaming experience, no more connecting to a host 2000 miles away and wondering why your game is lagging. With the GF enabled you'll know exactly where the host is located and have the ability to block that host if it's bad and that is a really nice feature to have on a router.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Dillinger has given you some great advice. Just my 2 cents I would definitely recommend enabling the Geo-filter.

Thanks Dillinger for the advice and thanks Fraser for the response. I was confused as to how having a more local hose to me could be a bad thing too. Especially if i can ban bad ones, but that's why i asked :-)  Turns up tomorrow, so will see how we go, setting it up as the 'fine tuning' guide says.

Actually when the software (and the Duma really) first came out, all any of us were really concerned with was the glorious dedicated servers we had heard SO MUCH about from every YT'er.

Turns out a lot of CoD was running on dedicated boxes, but some of them flat suck.  Once we got the ability to see where we were connecting, and that we had specific ID numbers that weren't playing well, the community asked for the ability to block/ban.  The Netduma team, to their continued credit, listened and gave us that ability for free in a patch.

So you are actually coming in to a more advanced version of the initial release.  It's more tuned, specifically, for FPS gaming.

The new DumaOS, which will launch after the start of the year, will be an even further step forward in this quest.

Standby for more awesome.  :D

The major reason i decided to buy the Netduma was that it wasn't just a piece of hardware and was more about the firmware :-)  Love the fact it can evolve and get better!  The gift that keeps on giving!

Any idea what the new DumaOS will bring?

I will say that with IW and MWR since it is player hosted lobbies and dedicated servers once the game starts it kind of becomes a pain with lobby booting if you are too restrictive with the geo-filter. I find myself using it more of an informational tool these days rather than having it enabled and restricting the game from doing it's thing. If I find it puts me in a bad lobby, I leave.

We haven't announced any specific features just yet :)

Why would it boot you once the game starts? out of interest. The dedi is not close enough/doesn't meet ping requirements?

Because say your player host is within your specifications of the filter - but the game server isn't... You'll get booted once the game tries to hand off to the server outside your filter settings.

For example, there are some mislocated servers in Washington that I ping 30ms to from New Jersey. If I set my radius to only cover the eastern part of the US, when it goes to connect to that server on the West coast I will get booted.

As MoD said, that can occur though if you have around ~1000km radius you should get a server within your radius.

Is there any way to do a search for dedicated servers near me? Then whitelist any good ones? :-) I just get lots of red circles, never know whether they are dedicated servers or just players in my lobby?

If you click on one of the circles and you cannot update it but you can temp ban it then it is a dedicated server.

Also when you first start up the game and go to find game, all the dedicated servers show up on the map.

What usually happens is the game selects a player host right up to the last moment and then jumps to a dedicated server.

Bruv. Owned my R1 for two years. Can not find ANY dedi server in IW. Perhaps I need a NetDuma pro to tweek my R1!

The only server I get is southern Nevada. Im in Seatown, and I keep hearing about the Seattle, dedi yet it escapes me.

BlackxWorm quotes for the win.

You should definitely be seeing more than 1 server. When you boot up the game do you not see padlocks all over the US?
