Gaming Monitor Tip

Recommended Posts

Some may not know this already but i just found out the other day  but using this tip makes your blacks black and your colors more sharper here is how to do it go to Settings/Sound and Screen/Video Output Settings and should see this change it from Automatic to Full This will only work if your gaming on a Monitor. TV's may not work so much has monitors can get richer colors.

I can confirm this on Xbox One too.

It makes a mess if you're using a tv though, I did a calibration test on my tv while using the Full RGB setting and I couldn't see some of the grey to black anymore.

there are tvs that can be set to full. some manufactures name this something else in the menu so it takes a little digging. Setting to Full will only work correctly if your tv/monitor is set to use Full.

Examples, PS4 Set to Full and Monitor set to full, RGB 0-255

PS4 Set to Full and Monitor set to Limited, RGB 16-235

PS4 Set to Limited and Monitor set to Full, RGB 16-235

PS4 Set to Automatic and Monitor set to Full, RGB 0-255

PS4 Set to Automatic and Monitor set to Limited, RGB 16-235

For Blacks to be black RGB needs to be 0-255

If your blacks do not look black and more grey and White do not look white then RGB = 16-235

if your tv cant, set ps to auto/limited. otherwise all your blacks will look the same, and playing any FPS in dark areas will be very hard.

What TV have you got and size? have you thought about a Benq/zowie 24" or 27"

I just set mine to RGB to test it with the calibration tool, you're right though, it was impossible to see some shades completely and was way too dark. On the plus side, I ended up spending ages recalibrating my TV and got a huge improvement eventually.

Xbox by the way, but same options apply as the one you have on PS4.

Unfortunately can't justify a new screen at the moment, as I've just upgraded a whole bunch of other stuff, but I'll definitely look into it as sales are coming up.

I do have a BenQ but I lent it to someone when their computer monitor packed up... I didn't consider at the time that it was probably decent for gaming :(

Will see about getting that back...

Also if you play in monitor .....

In console settings....display output settings....and change to 720p....untick 1080i and 1080p.

It is much clear the view....no so much fog etc.

Give a try to see. ;)

I really wouldn't recommend switching to rgb full, at least on xbox as it seems to be completely borked. The colours might pop more but you'll get crushed blacks meaning the darks will be too dark and the brights too bright. This is especially bad on things like competitive shooters as people in dark corners will be harder to see.

I dont think many people on console will stick to using full, we are all so used to rgb limited, (tv/dvd/sky etc, which are all rgb limited 16-235.)

For those that want that extra shade of colours in the white and black department it takes a short while to get used to. Those that usually play on full rgb are PC players.
