Ping spikes/time-outs when using NetDUMA Router

Recommended Posts

Dear NetDuma,

A couple of days ago I started using the netduma, the feature I am using it for is the Hybrid-VPN as I want to protect my IP from being known by the outside world.

The issue I am having is when I use the VPN on the NetDuma my ping has random spikes and when I start downloading I even get package loss. This only happens when I use the VPN on the NetDuma R1.

Tested it the following ways:

- Without VPN: No issues

- VPN directly on my computer: No issues

- VPN thru Netduma: Ping spikes and package loss when downloading/gameing. Enormous lag in games.

I am using my own VPN server (OpenVPN Access Server) at a data center close by. As most VPN services I tried to sign up with are blocked by Playstation Network or Xbox Live.

How can I resolve this issue? What am I doing wrong?

Can I send my Router back if the problem can not be resolved?

Some other issues:

- Webinterface: hangs from time to time, reboot needed to fix issue.

- Webinterface: Slow interface;

- Host Filtering: Geo location and settings not saved, when switching profile I am in the middle of the ocean.

- Host Filtering: You cannot remove a selected

- VPN setings: When making a mistake factory reset is needed.

- Configuration mostly not saved after reboot.

Missing:

- Internet Diagnostic has no way to test thru VPN.

- No firewall configurable.

- No support for Public IPv4/IPv6 subnet

- Multiple WAN TAG support.

And this is my list after only 1 day working with this router, I wouldn't recommend it as it is. You pay a high price for software that is laggy and full of bugs. The last software patch was months ago and since it seems to lay still.

I haven't found a email address fro techical support; Would love to help with my issue.

It is not recommended to game through VPNs due the reason you mentioned above - often they are very laggy.

Answers to your issues:

  • Use default theme and see if that fixes slow interface. Make sure you are on the latest version (1.03.6).
  • Make sure cookies are enabled in Settings >> Miscellaneous.
  • Sounds like you've selected the CoD Ultimate profile or similar? Some profiles purposely move your home location to the middle of the ocean so that only Ping Assist is utilised when searching for a game.
  • Yep, that's a known issue and probably quite annoying. Hopefully will be gone in next update.
  • They are saved if you reboot from Settings >> Miscellaneous.

Can't tell you about vpn, i don't have one and have never used the feature.

If your settings are not saving then you probably just need to enable cookies in miscellaneous settings, I'm surprised you didn't find that answer when you searched the forums.

I have been digging around, and reconfiguring my VPN setup a lot, the problem lies with in the Netduma R1 hardware. The CPU is way too weak to handle the VPN connection.

What I have done to fix the package loss:

- I removed encryption and the ping loss problem resolved.

- Removing compression seems to help a little too.

- Settings > Miscellaneous Settings > disable everything except for: "enable cookies", "Turbo mode", "Super Turbo mode (disables cc)"

- Settings > Wifi > Wireless > Disabled

Different method of testing:

1) Playing COD with Ping on to see how the connection is doing.

2) Ping to a stable server to check the latency and start browsing around the web to see what happens.

* Both methods are not used at the same time.

However my conclusion is that the CPU/Memory is way too weak for VPN to use correctly. It even get worse when I open the browser to the router and on page "Host Filtering", "Network Monitor" or switch pages. Another reason could be the VPN support hasn't been optimized as is.

Try using the reactive algorithm if you're not already.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

What are the speeds you are on? You'll only be able to max use of around ~10mbps on things that are actually VPN'd. Everything going through exceptions will have normal speeds.

I would hazard to guess you may not need to have super turbo mode on which should help.

Can you explain what you mean with this?

Go to congestion control and change the algorithm to "Reactive" (if it isn't already set to that). Using the reactive algorithm has fixed VPN problems in the passed.

Seriously the NetDuma R1 doesn't support faster speeds that 10mbps over VPN... That doesn't sound good!

Already was on the "reactive" mode in the "congestion control" section. The Netduma R1 CPU seems to be the bottleneck, I am running an VPN connection without encryption and without compression now. Seems to fix the ping loss, but not the low speed and ping spikes when downloading.

The VPN is only to protect my IP from the outside world. We got a lot of DDOS lately when playing COD, and only way to fix this is to be behind a VPN;

I feel a little conned with the NetDuma R1, I have paid 200 euro's and can't use function together without losing packages or have ping spikes. I wanted to use 3 of the key features at the same time:

- VPN

- Host Filtering

- Congestion Control (to make sure the stream to twitch and gameplay is guaranteed)

The software may be good, but the hardware is lagging behind enormously. To be honest I wouldn't recommend the R1 to anyone. Step up your games guys. It is not good to dumb down a router so you use one or max two key features without running into troubles.

Sorry...

How do I get my money back for this router I bought? It doesn't do what it said. To be honest I feel like I bought a under powered cheap router for 200 euro.

You'll have to wait for Fraser to respond and give you instructions.

If you have super turbo mode enabled that will disable congestion control meaning you can't limit those spikes caused by downloading. I would never recommend downloading through a VPN. VPN was a requested feature from those being DDoSed after we had launched the router. As it's a gaming router that speed is perfectly able to run every game - games do not use much bandwidth.

However, you're welcome to email [email protected] regarding a refund. There is no technical fault here that I can see but you should be within your purchase window.
