So I'm moving in a week or so, and I'm shopping around for my new net, unfortunately my options are very limited to either sky fibre (I forgot the speed) and plusnet 76down and 19up.. Has anybody got any experience with either of these providers?

I've heard plusnet are good,I have sky fibre and if I could leave right now I would, the router modem combo you get from them are rubbish

Wouldn't go near plusnet. They've been have issues with a large number of their gateways for a while.

Go to the forums at thinkbroadband.com and have a a look around. If you can get fttc then your options are vast with loads of different providers with their own pros and cons. Just make sure you understand if they are selling a wholesale BT product or their own fttc using their own network etc (sky / talk talk / zen for example).

I have been with p'net for over 2.5 years, and have never had any issues. My ping is very low and stable according to netduma even when the fibre connection is getting hammered (e.g. 2 IPTV HD streams, netflix hd, multiple downloads etc all at the same time)

that's not to say there are not issues, but just that I have not experienced them.

Would you be so kind as to elaborate on the "issues with a large number of their gateways" - I'd like to know when it comes up to renewing....?

Buds how do I find out of it has fttc? Plusnet are the only ones with fibre optic unfortunately..

fttc stands for fibre to the cabinet (green boxes you see on street, usually with a bt openreach van parked outside) and it is commonly marketed as fibre optic. What this means is that the cabinet in the street is connected to the local exchange by fibre. The link from your house to the cabinet is still copper. Hence, if you see fibre optic on an ISP's website, and it has speeds of ~80 DL, it's fttc.

fttp stands for fibre to the premises, which is the same as above with the exception that the cabinet is linked to your house by fibre optic (and hence cutting out the weak link of copper). Some ISPs offer this already, and some are running trials. Hence, if you see fibre optic on an ISP's website, and it has speeds of ~300 DL, it's fttp.

I was in pretty much the same boat my choices were BT Sky or Talk Talk, I chose sky in the end

I have their 40mbps fibre and not had any issues, the router they supply is crap but it's DMZ'd into the R1 and I've been smashing BO3 with that combo.  Ideally would like to replace the SR102 with a modem but MER is too much of a PITA so never bothered.

I'm in the same boat as you but I wouldn't know where to start and even with great instruction I'd still f*** it up lol

So... Plusnet told me the maximum download my line could handle was 20MB and 1-2mb max! Now.. I phoned bt right after and they told me I could have there 80MB package with 20up, and said plusnet is incorrect, do you think plusnet was being straight up and bt are full of shit..? Would Bt legally be able to lie? Also they said my cabinet is fttc is that good? Cheers guys

Zen Internet, they are by far the best.

This.

They're a little more expensive than other providers for what is essentially the same service running over the same BT wholesale network - however its when You have a problem that you can see where the extra money is going each month.

Customer service is ALWAYS absolutely superb , based in the UK quick to answer the phone and really put the pressure on BT to fix network problems to get you the best possible service at all times.

They're also completely transparent about how your line is performing and even put line data onto your network account so you can check line speed / sync rate etc.

Theres a reason they have won the best UK ISP for the last god knows how many years.

Second to none in My opinion , simply excellent.

That seems strange. P'net is actually owned by BT.

Have you checked this on p'net website which gives you an estimate? P'net may have quoted you speeds for a non-fibre package based on speeds you have indicated.

Nearly sure in the UK you can cancel broadband within 14 days if you are not happy with service.

A List of ISP cooling off periods http://www.simplifydigital.co.uk/faqs/what-is-a-broadband-cooling-off-period/

It is hard to suggest and ISP as for one person in an underutilised area may have a great time, but another user in a congested/contended area will be having issues with speed and pings from the same ISP.
