ISP Overcharging Me for Bandwidth

With my ISP I currently have a package that allows 70gb of bandwidth each month. Mostly I am under the limit and a few times occasionally I reach 70gb and only one time do I remember actually going over the limit and having to pay a fee.

Well my bill for January came in and they are claiming that I went 68gb over my limit. They charge $2/gb for over usage so I have an extra $136 on top of my original bill.

This is nearly impossible. I received a notification on January 26th saying I have reached 100% of my monthly bandwidth. Between Jan 26th and Feb 4th (when my new billing period started) I uploaded 5 videos to my YouTube which totalled 3.205gb which would equal $6.41 overcharge.

There are only two people in my house, me and my gf. We don't download movies, torrents, music, games etc. I'm the only one who uploads to YouTube. I can't see any way at all we could have used almost an entire months worth of bandwidth in  9 days.

Does anyone here know if there is a way for me to check how much bandwidth I have used in the past month? My ISP provided me with a statement that claims we went 68gb over but I need something to prove them wrong. Any ideas?

I suppose you could ring them and ask them if they can provide you with a break down on what the internet was used for. I am sure that they will have the records, but they might not give them to you.

Could somebody else be using your internet? Is your wireless password protected?

Hi Vile,

From a technical point of view not much you can do. I would do what Crossy suggests, maybe other people experienced with this can help.

We do plan to add a feature that tracks bandwidth long term so you can use it as evidence. I assume you would like this right?

Indeed this would help! When I talk to them I am going to ask them for some proof that I actually used an extra 60gb of bandwidth in 9 days.

As for someone else using my internet I really don't know. My wifi password became the serial number of my R1 once I hooked it up. I haven't changed it to anything else.

Damn, 70GB would be a struggle for me each month :/

It is likely to be an error but one thing perhaps worth checking would be your Xbox downloads (if on xbox don't know about PSN). When Halo launched my console was on the standby mode and the Halo download kept failing at 80%. Downloaded over 150GB off data according to the log overnight.

Also your router / modem might show data transmitted for current uptime period. If your connection is solid you might have an uptime of weeks which would cover that period as well.
