Ethernet cable crashed internet when I connect between PC and the R1.

Basiacally, Iain will remember this, he spent about 10 hours trying to help me with something that cable down to a dodgy ethernet cable. So I replaced ethernet cable and it worked. Strange thing was was that the cable worked with EVERY other device. e.g between PC and router but NOT PC and R1. I also tested it with a ethernet cable tester and it said that it worked.

The ethernet cable was one that I made myself, like I do with the others around the house because then they can be the right lengths.

So when I realised that it was the cable that was dodgy, I swapped it and everything worked fine.

But now I made another cable for the same PC because I needed one that was a bit longer than a factory made one I found in a drawer, but I am having exactly the same issue.

Even more strange, when I connect, the rest of the internet around my house drops until I disconnect the cable.

This is so strange. The only explanation I have at all, is something to do with the ethernet port detecting another cable and converting it to a cross over cable, although I really have no idea. The only reason I think this it because it is like there is a bridge somewhere which is why the internet is dropping but the cable works with other devices so I can't really understand why it doesn't work.

Any help would be much appreciated, although I understand this is quite strange.

Thank you :)

Can you make sure the LAN connection on your PC's network settings is enabled. Sure thats not it but just a thought :)

It defo is because if I unplug it from the R1 and plug into my router which is bellow it connects absolutely fine. Stone, in chat said it might me a NIC issue, so I have also posted on a more specialised(ish) forum (http://superuser.com/questions/874699/why-does-plugging-my-ethernet-cable-into-my-pc-crash-the-rest-of-my-internet) to see if they can offer any advice.

This is certainly very strange.....

I hope so, cause I have just done some immense cable management, and this ethernet cable is at the core of the hole bundle and I dread the prospect of having to take it out....:(

Oh gosh, yeah I can see why that would be annoying to take out!

Hehe, i know, I soooo should have tested it before I bound everything together, lol. Hmmm, I think I mite just cut the ends of and leave it in the middle, lol, it isn't worth undoing everything again. i just don't understand why it works with my other stuff but not between my PC and R1....

Haha good idea. Yeah its very strange indeed especially with other cables working fine with R1.

Ye, even stranger that it works with my other router but not the R1. I think that my PC must be detecting the R1 as some sort of other device instead of a router, and therefore is doing something strange, just got to work out how to fix it.....

UPDATE:

Yey, I got it working :D It was very simple, well for me it was anyway. I cut the end of the ethernet cable and converted it into a crossover cable, plugged it back in and it worked. This was after reading this forum which explained which devices require cross-over cables and which require straight though cables.

So at the moment everything is working. I cross my fingers that it stays this was!

PC has intermittent connectivity issue, be it a mechanical contact, hardware nic failure, or software failure? I know nothing technical about the jibbersih you speek but seems your connector on pc side may be the demon. Not an expert, just some thoughts.

Ha, I was just going to say to make sure it's a X-over cable but you figured it out yourself.  Glad you got it sorted.
