Astro A40 TR First Thoughts

Over the weekend I received my New Astro A40 TR headset. I know there have been a few threads recently about headsets and I thought i would add my 2 cents.

To put this in context, I have been using Astro's for a few years now and i am a bit of a fan boy but when you compare it to other headsets I have had you will probably understand why. Turtle beach PX5s, PX21's a few Tritons etc

I have been using my old A40's for at least 3 years and they were starting to die, well actually the headset is still good but the mix amp had started to do strange things. So got the new A40's on Saturday and haven't had a massive gaming session with them yet but did have a good game on BF4 yesterday.

I noticed the difference instantly the sound quality is amazing, everything sounded so crisp and i had to turn the volume down compared to where i had my setting on the old pair, I have got the Mod kit yet but even without the noise cancelling is pretty impressive, I can't hear the wife walking up behind me while i am playing ( Quite scary )

I haven't had a god play with the EQ setting yet except to amend the mic setting, it has three options Stream, Home  and Tournament each cutting out more background noise. the EQ setting for sound are all totally customisable  and can be sync backed to the headset for playing on the console. I will have a play with these over the coming weeks especially for COD but in BF4 i can pick out footsteps from miles away with the standard settings.

As soon as i get the Mod kit in Nov i will do a full review as i will have been using them for a while.

Overall first impressions Its a great headset and a step up from the original A40's just hope they last as long.

I was a fan of Astro Gaming headsets (I own three), but I splashed out and bought some Philips Fidelio X2 headphones and a Creative Sound Blaster X7 earlier this year. Honestly, it's night and day between audiophile level and gaming-grade gear. Astros are flat, dull and lifeless by comparison.

Astro is great for plug-and-play and/or wireless convenience, but don't mistake them for "amazing". Astro headphones are actually quite crappy, but you'll never notice unless you broaden your horizons beyond gaming. MixAmps are fantastic for the price and purpose, but if sound-whoring is your objective, look elsewhere for the cans.

Hooking up a mic to the X2s is a bit more complicated, so I still use my A50s when I want to chat on console, but otherwise they do nothing but gather dust.

Anyone interested in making the most of headphone gaming should read MadLustEnvy's thread on Head-Fi.org

It is all a question of what you have heard before, so users that have never heard an audiophile product will think the astro's are great and that's cool.

I like head-fi gear but it is best not to rain on people parades :)

You are comparing apples and oranges when you look at stuff like the x 7 and a proper pair of headphones versus Astros. Your comparing a £500ish set up with a £200. Personally I never play online without chatting to friends so your setup wouldn't really suit me, but I'm sure the sound is great.

I want to get the x7 for my pc but after spending 200 on a sound card I just couldn't do it.

The difference between the new a40s to the old a40's and especially the a50s is massive you have to remember the old a40s were 3/4 year old tech!

What has been improved internally to make them sound better if you don't mind me asking?

Not sure of the technical details yet haven't looked into it yet, but i know the mix amp now contains its own sound card and they are tailored to specific consoles now rather than having to put in work arounds for them to work
