Inconsistent internet.

Recommended Posts

My download is 35-45 and upload is about 5 and when things are working it runs great. Almost everyday when I get home from work my speeds are incredibly slow and I can only get 1 bars. When I test my connection on the ps4 my speeds are below 1 mbps both upload and download. I reset my router and that will usually fix it but then I have been losing connection mid game occasionally to. It has happened 3-4 times this month. I have a Motorola Surfboard connected to my netduma. Why is this happening? I love the router when it's working bit that seems to be about half of the time.

Motorola/Arris modems -there is some sort of bug that after steady usage the the ping starts to spike and the only way to correct it is to reboot the router. And the occurences are random  so it can happen after one hour or one day.  You never know.  Supposedly the problem can be fixed with a firmware update but that this up to when Comcast pushes out one who knows when that will be. These two modems are built off of the Broadcom chipset.

Motorola/Arris SB6141-- Is built based off of the Texas Instruments chipset.  Should work fine but I can not confirm this.

I had the SB6183 and I can confirm this.  I think any other time the SB6121 and SB6183 would work fine but for some reason when the R! and the SB6183/6121 are in a setup together this bug is revealed.

If you already have the SB6141 I would not purchased another modem.  Use it for your setup with the Netduma but if you do start to have issues or if you haven't  already got the SB6141 I would recommend the Netgear CM500.  It is compatible with Comcast and works well the the higher tiers.  It's about $90 on Amazon.

Hope this helps.

I have the SB6121. Good to know it's not the router but that is still very frusterating. I guess I'll be getting a new modem. Thank you.

No problem. From what I read a firmware update would fix the Motorola/Arris issue but the ISP's usually do not push updates unless a mass quantity of people are having issues. If you would like a recommendation the netgears are pretty good. Goodluck and game on.

I got a new modem now and am running into the same problem just as often. I have the netgear CM500 and everything will be good and the all of the sudden the Internet DL speed drops from 50Mbps to <1 mbps and it happens every day. I reset the router and it goes back but it happens with both my SB6183 and Netgear modem and I never had any issues begone I got the r1

I know you said that it only started happening since you got the Netduma but if you connect your old router to the CM500 to you have the issue?

Hey Becker,

If you log in to the modem at 192.168.100.1

ID= admin

PASSWORD = password

and click on Advanced tab

then click on Modem Event log

do you see T3 and T4 errors?

Yeah. I see both of those and also under the priority tab there is a lot of Critical (3) and the description says SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - failure to aquire QAM/QPSK. I would just post a picture but idk if any information on there would could be used to hit me offline or anything like that.

Well from my recent investigations I would assume that you also have a problem with the modem and it using

Energy Efficient Ethernet.

The only fix right now is to reset the modem when you start to get high pings, packet loss, and low download speeds.

The next update will have an option to Disable Energy Efficient Ethernet.

I usually only have problems after downloading a large file through the R1.

Those T3 and T4 errors are from the upload not being able to sync with the ISP headend.

A modem restart works for a while.
