NEW R3 FIRMWARE - DumaOS 4.0.540

Recommended Posts

Took some doing to get the firmware to actually update but it finally did!Β

I think the trick is to "Reboot" the router from the settings page, and then IMMEDIATELY after it's back online, upload the new firmware. I was hard rebooting, return to default settings, etc. but that was what finally worked.Β

I have to say, I think I'm seeing quite a nice improvement. BF2042 hit registration seems a little more crispy and I'm seeing fewer "server issues" symbols pop up in game. So far that's the only game I've tried, but it does seem better overall.Β

Hello, Netduma Team,

I am experiencing some issues with my Netduma R3 and would appreciate your help in resolving them. Here are my main concerns:

1. Latency fluctuations and unstable ping

  • Despite usingΒ Geo-Filter with Strict Mode enabledΒ and adjustingΒ Ping Optimizer, I am still experiencing noticeable latency fluctuations and occasional ping spikes.
  • TheΒ Steady Ping featureΒ does not seem to be stabilizing the connection as expected.

Same for me. I'm noticing slightly higher latency (compared to prior beta firmware) in waveform bufferbloat tests through various congestion control settings and running at various times in the day - seems to be more random and fluctuates.

On prior beta firmware, it was 80% CC download for me that achieved consistent repeatable low latency in the bufferbloat test + having stable ping in valorant.

Valorant shows spikes in the ping and jitter more than the prior beta firmware.

It's not bad, but it's not as good as it was before. I'd love to have it more consistent for smoother gameplay and lower latency like before.

I am in the NW of the US and I have my own created filters that I've shaped around where I want. Ever since the last update and still through this update, I am still connecting to servers in Chicago, Illinois. Steady-ping and Geo-latency are off, ping-assist is at 0, strict mode is on, fast search is off. I've tried everything that I have read on here and on Google but it still happens. I really wish there was a way to filter-block areas that you don't want, like in my case, I wish I could draw a square around Illinois for a filter to block everything from that area no matter what.Β

Once ACC is out you shouldn't need to worry about fine tuning this anymore, it should take care of it for you, the team is working hard on that currently

You can do that with the Polygon mode essentially. Are you enabling the Geo-Filter when you're already on the game? Are you leaving your gaming device in an instant on/standby mode.

Any betas for this? Or limited testers? I’d be open to it if there’s a chance.

i do hope the base router is becoming stable overall so we don’t have to always rely on additional features/resources to fix it. I’m still enjoying the router and can’t wait for the next beta.

Not sure when it would be but we'll likely get it out to Early Access as soon as we're confident it's performing well

Hi, I'm having a big issue with .540 update. I'm unable to connect with the WiFi using 5Ghz/160 Mhz connection. Firmware .290 works without an issue. Any solutions ?

Some devices don't like that band, is it on every device or older devices?

It's literally on every device. As I've mentioned .290 firmware with those settings 5Ghz/160Mhz works fine with every device.Β

2. PPPoE vs. DHCP connection issues

  • I have two ISPs at home:
    • Claro (DHCP)Β β†’ Works fine when configured directly on the Netduma.
    • Vivo (PPPoE)Β β†’Β The connection frequently drops after a period of use.
  • I found that to use an ISP withΒ PPPoE, it must be set up viaΒ DMZ on the ISP modem, as NetdumaΒ does not handle PPPoE well directly.
  • Are there any additional configurations recommended to stabilize the PPPoE connection via DMZ?

3. Errors found in logs

  • I have noticed repeated warnings in my logs, such as:
    daemon.errΒ cli.lua[4274]:Β [WARNING]:Β ctΒ [random code]:Β timeΒ wentΒ backwards!
    • This occurs multiple times and may be affecting performance.
  • I also found logs indicating thatΒ HybridVPNΒ andΒ DHCPv6Β are active, even after attempting to disable them:
    daemon.warnΒ dhcp6c[PID]:Β T1Β expiredΒ daemon.warnΒ dhcp6c[PID]:Β T2Β expired
    • Is there a way toΒ completely disable DHCPv6Β in the system?

4. Port Forwarding and Traffic Prioritization Issues

  • I have manually configuredΒ port forwardingΒ based on recommendations forΒ Call of Duty (Black Ops 6)Β and also setΒ 1-65535 UDP/TCP in SmartBoost, but I am unsure if this could cause conflicts.
  • Additionally, I have tried limiting bandwidth usingΒ Bandwidth ReservationΒ for gaming traffic, but I am not sure if the values I used are optimal.

My Configuration:

  • ISP:Β Claro (DHCP) / Vivo (PPPoE - via DMZ)
  • Configured MTU:Β 1500
  • QoS Settings:Β Auto (Recommended) with 89% down / 85% up
  • Geo-Filter:Β Only Brazil, Ping Assist 20-70ms
  • UPnP:Β Disabled, using manual Port Forwarding
  • Netduma R3 Firmware:Β Latest version (v4.0.540)
  • HybridVPN:Β Disabled (but logs indicate it may still be running)

My Questions:

  1. Do these log errors indicate a serious problem?
  2. Is there a way toΒ completely disable DHCPv6 and HybridVPN?
  3. IsΒ using port forwarding + 1-65535 UDP/TCP in SmartBoostΒ the best approach?
  4. Are there any other optimizations that could further stabilize my gaming connection?
  5. Are there any specific settings thatΒ could improve PPPoE stability via DMZ?

I appreciate any assistance you can provide!

  1. Can you give us some of the stats you're seeing on this please?
  2. The team are aware and looking into it
  3. You can ignore those, it won't cause any issues
  4. Port Forwarding and Bandwidth reservation are completely different features, they won't cause conflicts. It won't be limiting, it's just reserving bandwidth.

--

  1. No they don't pose a problem
  2. You can disable IPv6 in WAN/LAN settings. If you don't have HybridVPN enabled it will be disabled.Β
  3. No reserving bandwidth won't do anything, gaming doesn't require much anyway. Prioritize it and have Congestion Control active.
  4. ^
  5. No, it's something the team need to resolve

Β

I did it!Β πŸ’ͺ😎

After many attempts, I finally managed to establish a PPPoE connection and stay connected. For my case, being in Brazil and using VIVO as my ISP, I had to set the modem (Mitrastar) to Bridge mode through the advanced settings. Using the standard VIVO interface didn’t work.

I also had to keep IPv6 WAN enabled because when it was disabled, the connection wouldn’t hold. I believe this was the reason for the disconnections, meaning that VIVO uses IPv6 for authentication.

I tried disabling the VLAN on the ISP modem and enabling it on the Netduma R3, but it wouldn’t establish a connection. So I left VLAN enabled on the Mitrastar modem, and that worked.

Another important point I noticed, @fraser, is that the VLAN setting on the R3 can only be activated during the initial setup. If it was previously configured without VLAN, it doesn’t allow changes. I had to factory reset the R3, enable VLAN, and even tried cloning the MAC, but nothing worked until I enabled IPv6 and proceeded with authentication.

I've been connected for about 6 hours straight, and now I'll fine-tune the R3 to get the best results on Waveform.

Today, I also purchased a static IP from my ISP to see if it improves the connection, and I ordered a Ubiquiti Nano G ONT to replace the ISP’s modem, which is very limited.

Your ISP allows you to bypass the ONT?

It's not easy in France because it's not plug&play.

I’m not sure yet, but I’ll find out! Haha

I know that to replace the ISP modem, you need the PPPoE credentials (username and password provided by the ISP), the VLAN ID used by the ISP (which can be found by accessing the ISP modem or calling them), and then configure PPPoE on the R3, enable VLAN on the R3, and check whether IPv6 WAN is required or not.

I already have all this information, but it might be necessary to contact the ISP to request authorization for using a third-party ONT.

I do know that some people here in Brazil have successfully made this switch.

Ok ! πŸ˜‰

Keep us posted, I just wanted to make sure you're not wasting your money on hardware that can't do better than your ISP ONT or is too complicated to manage.

If others have succeeded, why not if you have time to try, but the bypass in France is more of a copy of the ISP ONT than a simple DHCP option or a VlanID...

Well done on getting it resolved and thanks for the update/solution! You should be allowed to change VLAN when on the main interface, what happens exactly when you try that?

When I tried to change the VLAN in the main interface after the initial setup, the option was not available. It seems that VLAN settings can only be configured during the initial setup process on the R3. If the router has already been set up without VLAN, it does not allow changing it later.

To apply VLAN settings, I had to factory reset the R3, then configure PPPoE with the correct credentials and enable VLAN (ID 10) during the initial setup. Trying to enable VLAN afterward didn’t work.

Additionally, I had to leave VLAN enabled on the Mitrastar modem instead of configuring it on the R3, because when VLAN was disabled on the modem and enabled on the R3, the connection would not establish.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more details.

VLAN is available in Settings > WAN > Advanced do you see it there?

No it won't be related to that at all.Β

  • What is the model of the modem/router the R3 is connected to and how have you set that to ensure all traffic flows to the R3? E.g R3 in its DMZ, modem/bridge mode
  • Are ALL devices connected to the R3?
  • What are the speeds you pay for/receive?Β
  • Have you entered those speeds into the router?
  • How have you setup Congestion Control?
  • How have you setup SmartBOOST?
  • What game are you playing?
  • What platform are you playing on and how is it connected, via ethernet or WiFi?
  • How have you setup the Geo-Filter?

Ping Optimizer just changes the Congestion Control values which can be done manually so the only thing it would indicate is that you probably need to re-adjust those percentagesΒ

I can see the VLAN option. What I meant is that after setting up the R3 with VLAN disabled, I wasn’t able to activate it laterβ€”it just wouldn’t save the change (VLAN enabled).

Β

I was only able to activate it after a factory reset and setting everything up from scratch. However, my ISP doesn’t allow the R3 to handle everything, meaning it can’t fully authenticate via PPPoE.

Β

At this moment, the issue is not with the R3 but with my ISP’s modem.

Β

Once my Ubiquiti ONT arrives, I’ll test it to see if I can make the R3 handle the full authentication process.

I know there was a firmware early on where it didn't save but that was resolved a while ago so should be fine now. Yes please then we can see if it has regressed
