boothay
Good Morning Gents! First off thank you for making me feel welcome here and all the great work to the DUMA staff..I really appreciate everything. I want to talk about bufferbloat...ive been hearing alot about this topic..and this is something that I'd like to get straightened out on my network as much as possible...... so below i have my attached results from my test...the last firmware .40 I was able to achieve an A+ rating...this latest firmware...its went wayyyyyy south. I have a few questions....once you get a A+ is this something that usually stays that way? or do you have to tweak it daily? Secondly.. I changed my WAN DNS settings to Googles...you know the 8.8.8.8 and so forth...will that affect my results? I have the R3 in DMZ ...conjestion sliders to 60/85 which was the same as the last time i got a A+. Smartboost on with the only priority set as gaming .........that's 90% of what I do.......I live by myself with Gigabit internet ... 1k up and down...Im scratching my head here guys lol. I always run the tests with "Speed Bypass" off. Do you run the tests with all of your usual equipment running or turn everything else off? Im running the test on my wired connection pc. waveform_com_bufferbloat_test_results_d731e9af-4eb4-4eeb-934e-8f9f83b6e7d8.csv
Fuzy
Hi ! You can perform the test with all of your devices! It is also recommended. This test is done to congest your bandwidth to see what percentage is necessary to avoid having a bottleneck and keep a regular ping even in the event of a large download or upload with your symmetrical 1GB connection. For the test, set to always activated if you want your percentage to be taken into account. You can put it back on automatic once you find the right percentages! Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 4 Administrators Share Posted February 4 Some good advice above, a few things, depending on what the firmware changes you may need to find values that work better on that version - the same values may not necessarily work on every firmware version. SmartBOOST priorities can impact the test so best to remove them, find what works then add them back after. Now as you live by yourself and you're not doing any downloading at the same time as gaming you actually may not need to fine tune QoS as much as you have a lot of speed. boothay
So your saying Bufferbloat should not be as important to me and I should prioritize speed over it? Being that I dont share bandwith with anyone.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 4 Administrators Share Posted February 4 Not that you should prioritize speed necessarily, I just don't think you need to spend a lot of time fine tuning it as much - bufferbloat is lag caused when your network is saturated. If you're only gaming at the time and not downloading/using other devices at the same time then your connection won't become saturated and bufferbloat won't occur. If your performance is up to snuff, and you can be sure that no other computer or person is using your connection while you're gaming, then you shouldn't spend time worrying about bufferbloat. But... If you get random lag, you need to consider the possibility that bufferbloat is a problem. Use the Waveform or Speedtest.net tools to see their results. Then why do I get bufferbloat when only my PC is using bandwidth, say in the evening, and I have CC off. I just set it to 50/50 these days as guarantees no bufferbloat. Best to check Network Activity and see what might be going on at the time
Gskillz
@boothay Hey had the same issue, go to speed test, then click find my speed, after the R3 gets your speed, press set my speed to save, then go test your bufferbloat again and it should come up A+. Speeds can change from day to day, or at peak hours. DOGGAVELI
MattyAu
Ping Optimiser (Full Test / Expert Mode) coming back with Upload throttle: 100% / Download throttle: 99% on a 96Mbps down / 33 Mbps up connection; that seem reasonable?? Bufferbloat Grade came back as a 'D'. 🤣 (With Congestion Control set to 'Always On' & Speed Test Bypass 'Off' while testing)

I have minimal to no traffic when I am gaming and more than enough bandwidth but if I don't lower my CC settings for DL and UP I don't get an A+ BB score. The test is simulating a saturated network and what your ping would then be in that scenario so that does make sense
