Latency issue.

Recommended Posts

Ever since I’ve hooked up my R3, my latency on my series X has doubled from Low 20s to high 50s. Just wondering if there’s some troubleshooting I can try? Download and upload speeds have been good.

Are you referring to “ping optimizer”? I don’t see anything that says steady ping on my app

Nevermind. I see it under geo

It'll be Steady Ping, disable that and it will be lower

Disabled it and latency is still mid 40s. With this R3 my NAT type is now moderate and it says double NAT detected? Not sure if that affects anything but prior to this router I was open

You'll need to copy the WAN IP from Settings > WAN and put that in the DMZ on your ISP modem/router. Make sure then that ALL devices are connected to the R3. That will help with ping as well. Are you using Congestion Control in Ping Optimizer > Advanced? As that will eliminate local congestion and keep your ping low.

It fixed my NAT, that is now open. But my latency is still high which I’m not understanding why it’s higher then the modem from my ISP

As above make sure Steady Ping is disabled as in case it re-enabled. What settings are you using for Congestion Control now?

Yup it’s been off. Congestion control is was just changed from auto - always on. With no improvement. Is the R3 just not a good fit with my Xfinity modem? It’s the latest one

Highly recommend ditching comcast gateway all in one router/wifi with your own Docsis 3.1 modem. I gave my DOCSIS 3.1 modem to my gf's parents for her little brother, then hooked them up with some mesh wi-fi ap's for christmas and they have had way better bandwidth and latency compared to comcraps modem/router combo.

I’m not against doing that. I’m just confused to why my comcast modem by itself is giving me better numbers then my R3.

It could be the that the way the comcast modem is sending data to the router could be causing a backup in data tbh. Not all devices play well with one another, so all the more reason to get a stand alone modem and let the R3 run your network. Highly recommend either the Netgear CM1000, Arris S33 or the Motorola MB8611. All three of those are more than compatible with Comcast and you should see much better latency as those all in ones are designed for ease of replacement and have super short shelf life lol.

What percentages are you using specifically for Congestion Control and do you notice any difference after adjusting them? We usually suggest starting at 70% and experimenting from there

Currently download and upload are at 100%

It won't be doing anything at 100 so try 70 and experiment from there and you should notice a difference

After changing it to 70, my download speed went from 900 MBPS to 200 and upload went from 70 to 5

Do you have speed test bypass enabled? Where are you testing the speeds? Is this over WiFi or ethernet?

Nope. I’m testing speeds wired on my Xbox
