10TB ReadyShare drive? XR500 router

Recommended Posts

I posted the following in the NETGEAR community but no one could answer it.

Have a 3TB WD drive connected to my XR500 Readyshare.  Works perfectly. Duma OS.  I do not use Genie.

Want to also connect a 10TB Western Digital Easystore drive.  The compatibility list is outdated.

Anyone know (for sure) if it will work?  Thank you in advance.  (sorry if this is the wrong forum)

What are you confused about exactly? I can help to clarify for you.

DumaOS is made by Netduma which is basically everything you see on the interface apart from the Settings pages which are done by Netgear. You asked about ReadyShare and I was attempting to help which we always do on the Netgear forum but as we didn't make the feature I can't give you an answer I can 100% standby.

Confused indeed.  Netgear forum.  Netduma forum.  Nighthawk Pro Gaming forum, Nighthawk forum, to name a few.  I often put up a post only for an Admin to tell me it belongs in another.  So ... I posted in the right forum (evidently) but got a reply from a Netduma Partner who 'helps out' in the Netgear forum who could not answer the question, but I was assuming he was a Netgear moderator, so thought I was in the wrong forum.  It went downhill from there.  The irony, still don't know what will happen if I plug an incompatible drive into my XR500.  Don't get me wrong ..... EVERYONE in all these forums give their all and are wizards compared to me.  As you demonstrate yourself, everyone wants to be sure visitors are helped.  THANK YOU.

Don't want to take too much of your time.  It would be great if:

XR500 support forum   ???  url

Duma OS support forum  ???  url

ReadyShare support forum  ???  url

assuming there are mentionable specific forums.

I REALLY appreciate your concern and kindness.  Thank you again.

You're on the Netduma Forum now: forum.netduma.com
The other post you made is on the (Netgear) Nighthawk Pro Gaming Forum: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-Pro-Gaming-Routers/bd-p/en-home-nighthawk-pro-gaming-routers

There isn't a specific forum just for the ReadyShare features, but you can also raise a support ticket directly with Netgear at support.netgear.com.

Router out of warranty.  I don't think Netgear will answer a support ticket.  That's why I have GearHead who only responds to a phone call, ... as I recall.  Thanks again for all the help.

I don't see why it would not work TBH.

Many drives are not on their compatibility list, but they still work.

Buy the drive, if it doesn't work return it.

To be honest I use Ready share only for light functions as the router restricts the transfer speed. (otherwise it would choke your internet connection) it's ok for movie streaming etc but file transfer wise I was usually stuck around 85 MB/s. If you need a lot of drive space etc a separate server is better.

Modern day spinning discs of that size should do 200-250 MB/s.

Thank you, Mr. Bert.  I agree.  Probably a lot of drives work but not on list.  I already own this 10TB drive and it has a lot of files on it.  Would like to simply attach it to XR500 but since backing it up is not possible, nervous about plugging it in.

GREAT POINT.  I am sure you are dead on right, but getting involved with 'separate server' is WAY over my head.  Too bad because 85MB/s certainly IS slow.
I think I will throw caution to the wind and attach this Drive.  It's only data.  Thank you for all the good advice.

EDIT:

Just now found this
https://kb.netgear.com/24069/How-do-I-set-up-FTP-access-on-my-Nighthawk-router

Would probably be better than what I am doing now but still not much instruction for a rookie.  I have used FTP occasionally over the years.  Worried doing this will HONK up my current set up.  Have a 3TB drive on XR500 now ... using ReadyShare and mapped to Drive M:.  Since I have an available USB port figured I MIGHT do the same with the 10TB.  Could I do the FTP thing for 10TB but keep things as they are for the 3TB?

I have never tried the FTP option. But I think that enabling FTP will enable it on both drives.

Should not be an issue though just adding the 10TB drive with a external caddy.

external caddy

a whut?  😉  I think that is like an enclosure??  The 10TB is fully enclosed .... with fan and power supply.

by that you mean a direct USB connection from drive to router ..... in spite of slow throughput ... right?  Forget FTP??   I could live with that .... assuming it will work.  Will try it and see.  Thank you again.
