ntino
Trying to set up my torrent client to use hybrid VPN, I set up hybrid VPN that works on the device running the torrent client (namely Tixati) when I use hybrid VPN for the entire device. However trying just run VPN for the tixati service by adding the port used by tixati but that does not appear to work (no effect of speed when torrenting, and I can still see my IP on "self connect" connection on a particular tracker). Am I doing something wrong?
Administrators Netduma Alex Posted September 30, 2019 Administrators Share Posted September 30, 2019 Welcome to the forums! The port that you're putting into Hybrid-VPN is the same port that you entered into the settings of the torrent program right?
ntino
yes of course, selecting both UDP and TCP
Administrators Netduma Alex Posted September 30, 2019 Administrators Share Posted September 30, 2019 Okay nice, just starting with the basics. Do you know if the VPN server you're using is TCP or UDP? In Tixati settings, under Connections, you can choose the Outgoing and Incoming peer connection protocols. Maybe set those to TCP only or UDP only based on what kind of VPN server you're using.
ntino
So I am using expressVPN, I think they use both UDP and TCP - express VPN also has software that can allow a specific app to be VPNed, but for somehow it blocks uploads in tixati. I tried changing Tixati to UDP only and the speed dropped weather I am using hybrid VPN or not, not sure how to tell at this point if its working
ntino
So actually I went ahead and downloaded an ip tracking torrent and while using expressVPN app to only allow TIXATI to use VPN everything works fine regardless weather Tixati is set to UDP or TCP - the tracker returns proxy ip. however neither setting does anything for DumaOS hybrid VPN which as far as I can tell does nothing = what am I doing wrong? Administrators Netduma Alex Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 I imagine what's happening is that there's a port we're missing. I'll need to look up what the typical port ranges are. Also, torrents tend to use TCP rather than UDP because with UDP it won't be possible for the seeder to confirm whether you got the packets or not. That's probably why it was slower. ntino
As far as I can see /read these is just one port, has always been that way, I disabled UPNP and am forwarding the port manually. I have always just had to forward one port with tixati on various setups
Administrators Netduma Alex Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 Well it looks like you're doing everything right then... I'll have to ask a colleague about this one because I can see no reason why this wouldn't be working.
ntino
its strange because when I use VPN for the whole device its working fine
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 Change the VPN port rule back to the default for source ports which is 1-65535 and leave the destination port as it is, please see if it works then. ntino
nope, that continues not to work
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 Can you change the VPN Traffic service to Do NOT VPN these services and then see if the VPN has successfully applied to the device itself (not the torrent). Just want to see if the VPN itself is actually working.
ntino
yes it is working correctly for web when i turn it on and off (VPN for web on when I select DO NOT VPN the tixati port)
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 Could you change the port on the program and then fully shut it down. Then change the rule on the VPN to the new port. Give it a few minutes then try the program and see if it works then please - using the same source ports I mentioned. ntino
Thats not working. I can reset both router and PC if you want me to, is this correct? (assuming tixati port is 48484
ntino
btw just realized that somehow tixati keeps working even though I distabled UPNP and not forwarding the correct port?"!
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 Yes please. Wait you've disabled UPnP and port forwarding on the router? I would recommend leaving UPnP on. It can still work it's just harder for it to find the correct destination.
ntino
I had port forwarding set up for the port, I just noticed that changing the port and not changing port fowarding still worked..
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 1, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 1, 2019 Did resetting PC/router help at all?
ntino
Nope, no change whatsoever..... I did enable UPNP again

Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 2, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 2, 2019 In your torrent program could you disable uTp please and see if that helps at all.
ntino
As far as I can tell there is no uTp option in tixati, there is only enabling UDP only without TCP and I have already tried that https://forum.tixati.com/support/5423 Do you maybe want me to disable DHT, sorry not a networking expert so my understanding of these things is very limited
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 3, 2019 Administrators Share Posted October 3, 2019 Thanks for the link, based on that yes please do try disabling DHT.
