justlookingaround12
Alright so the main thing attracting me to the XR500 is DumaOS and mainly the geofilter feature. I currently have a setup at home with my ISP modem/router (which i can't disable) going to my Google Wifi. Currently I have a double NAT setup which isn't that much of a problem since I'm forwarding all the ports i need so i have an open NAT type. However while playing BO4 my ping is fluctuating anywhere between 100 and 200 ms. Its really making the game unplayable so I'm looking to limit my matchmaking to servers around me to make the game more enjoyable. My question is, if i was to buy the XR500 and set up so that it goes ISP Modem/Router > Google Wifi > XR500. So my question is will i get good results with this setup? My main goal is to set up the geo filter. I will have the XR500 as a priority device in Gwifi (similar to QoS) and forward all relevant ports which will then be forwarded to the xbox. Of course I'd like to know if this will help my situation before i go and make the purchase, I'm getting pretty tired of 150ms ping on BO4 lol. crunkjuice1
Who is your isp? Make and model of the gateway they are providing you? It may be possible to put the gateway in bridge or pass through mode which allows you to use a third-party router. The XR500 will be the one handling everything and the gateway will act as only a modem.
Administrators Netduma Admin Posted October 21, 2018 Administrators Share Posted October 21, 2018 Yes - you will get great results with this setup. The main purpose will be the Geo-Filter to guarantee servers in your favourite region. Double NAT should be easy to solve. The simplest step is to set your modem to modem / bridge mode, and then put your XR500 in your Google router's DMZ. We can help you here if you get stuck at any point. DumaOS also gives you a lot more than the Geo-Filter. There's QoS, Network Monitor etc. Plus we have a big roadmap of great features that we will be bringing out. justlookingaround12
@crunkjuice1 Thanks for your reply, the make of the modem is Huawei I will check the model of it as soon as I get back home. From what I've seen though the ISP has disabled certain options from the ONT. The admin credentials can only edit certain settings but the telecomadmin credentials (which don't get shared) can put it in bridge mode. @Netduma Admin Thanks for your reply. The thing is that I can't put the modem/router in bridge mode. So I'm wondering how/if things will work correctly with essentially 3 routers (the xr500 being the 'last'). I'd really appreciate your input! Also, the reason I'm sticking with the GWifi is because it provides great mesh single ssid all around the house with all the APs I have and I'm able to check on it even when I'm away from home. Also, I'd hate for them to go to waste since I spent a lot on them.
crunkjuice1
You might not be able to turn it in bridge mode but I would call the isp and ask them if they can do it from there end. They can log into it and configure things sometimes. Found something online maybe it helps but you are correct you will lose mesh.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 21, 2018 Administrators Share Posted October 21, 2018 Would it be possible to do modem > XR500 > GWiFi instead? Then you would get the most out of the router by being able to utilise it's QoS as well.
justlookingaround12
@Netduma Fraser I can do that setup but then in that case the Xbox will be connected to the GWifi (hardwired), Would that still give me the desired results? The one thing off the top of my head is that when i apply the Geo-Filter i only want it to be applied to the xbox and not everything (since everything is connected to Gwifi). PS All Gwifi's and the XR500 will be hardwired, but due to the way the wires have been pulled in my house the main router (following the modem) will have to be on the first floor whereas the xbox is on the second floor. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 22, 2018 Administrators Share Posted October 22, 2018 If you can put the GWiFi into AP mode then you would see the devices individually on the device manager (even if some devices are connected wired) and then be able to apply only to the Xbox. Is that a possibility?
justlookingaround12
@Netduma Fraser Thanks for your reply, unfortunately if i do that i will lose the mesh capabilities of the GWiFi, which have been giving me great results. Any other solutions you can think of? PS i really appreciate you taking the time to help me out! It would be great if i could find a way to work this device (mainly DumaOS) into my network! Administrators Netduma Admin Posted October 22, 2018 Administrators Share Posted October 22, 2018 Just to clarify, GWiFi does not have an AP mode? Or it does, but then no longer operates as a mesh system? That sounds a bit odd. If it's truly not possible, than you can go Modem>GWifi>XR500 - the downside to this is you won't be using the XR500 QoS to manage all the devices in your home. But you will still have the Geo-Filter and QoS and Network Monitor can manage any devices that do connect to it (in addition to your Xbox)
justlookingaround12
@Netduma Admin Thanks for your response. The latter is true, it can be set to AP mode but then it no longer operates as a mesh system. In that case may i know what exactly QoS does? I'd just like to know what I'm missing out on and if it's enough for me to consider getting an XR500 mesh system (I saw a bundle package on Amazon). Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 22, 2018 Administrators Share Posted October 22, 2018 Well QoS will ensure that no matter what any device connected is doing that you will not get any local congestion whatsoever. Meaning games can be played and downloads/streaming can all be done at the same time. You can also prioritise your game to ensure it's ahead of any potential network queue meaning you lower the ping as much as possible while also minimising jitter/spikes.
